"Three winters ago, Yasmine Hamdan was known as Y.A.S., an encounter between her own culture (10 years dominating the Arab underground scene from Beirut, becoming it’s icon as the front woman and singer of her band Soapkills) and Mirwais’s electropop music. Y.A.S. was more than a project, it was a symbol (musical, geopolitical, religious, the perspectives are very wide): that of a potential bridge between two worlds that radios, media, dance floors, ears, and mentalities on both ends never imagined coming together. Never mind the skeptics, the orient-occident encounter did in fact take place. It allowed Yasmine to realize her strength, and to dig deeper into her own identity search. Today, it is only under her name that she embraces a new project."
"In September 2011, Marc Collin and Yasmine met in Marc’s studio (whose name evokes New Order « The Perfect Kiss »). Yasmine brought along some songs she’d written, and many favored classics from her huge collection of rare veteran Arab albums. Far from the idea of making remixes, working on these songs was similar to using samplers: from this piece, she picked a melody, a chorus, found a way of vibrating arabic dialects, repeating lines and phrases recreating all the arrangements until yielding something completely original. It won’t be a remake, nor a tribute, nor a modernization, but rather a remote memory of a melody."
"The album Yasmine Hamdan was created in two phases.Yasmine worked with the guitarist Kevin Seddiki in a rather folk mood, dreaming of a certain «intimisme», deeply impregnated with 70s romanticism (Beirut, Bala Tantanat, Shouei). Then Marc Collin dressed these melodies with an electronic vibe, as his synthesizers gave accents to each song.The rest of the album is the result of intensive studio collaboration between Yasmine and Marc. Starting with Marc’s vintage synthesizers collection (notably the amazing Roland Jupiter 8 and the Chroma Polaris), they chose to create an acoustic universe to accompany Yasmine’s vocal swings, and settle Arabic in a code-free environment. Arab melodies, sometimes complex or tonal, rest here on very simple chords with pop tonalities. The voice becomes raw material. Rhythmic loops are created from organic sounds that only recall a faraway hint to «ethnic» percussions. In Nag, Ya Nediya, Samar, In Kan Fouadi, we reminisce of the times of the 4AD label (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil)."

Il y a trois hivers de cela, Yasmine Hamdan était Y.A.S., duo ou plutôt point de rencontre entre sa culture à elle (dix ans à dominer depuis Beyrouth la scène underground arabe dont elle fût l’icône en tant que chanteuse au sein de Soapkills) et l’électropop de Mirwais. Plus qu’un projet, Y.A.S. était un symbole (musical, géopolitique, religieux, les perspectives ici ramassaient larges) : celui d’un possible pont entre deux mondes que les radios, les médias, les dancefloors, les oreilles, les mentalités celles des uns aussi bien que celles des autres, n’avaient jamais imaginé voir se rencontrer. Et tant pis pour les sceptiques, la rencontre Orient-Occident a bel et bien eu lieu. Elle a permis à Yasmine de prendre conscience de sa force, et l’a amenée à pousser plus loin en profondeur dans son identité. C’est sous son nom aujourd’hui qu’elle caresse un nouveau projet".
"Au mois de septembre 2011, Marc Collin et Yasmine se sont retrouvés dans le studio de Marc (au patronyme évoquant New Order « The Perfect Kiss »). Yasmine a apporté avec elle quelques chansons qu’elle avait écrites, mais aussi pas mal de morceaux fétiches tirés de sa collection infinie de grands disques arabes perdus.
Moins avec l’idée d’en faire des reprises que de travailler ces chansons quasiment à la façon d’un sampler : sur tel morceau, elle s’empare d’une mélodie, d’un refrain, d’une façon de faire vibrer l’arabe, et à partir de là répéter la phrase, en retravailler tous les arrangements jusqu’à obtenir quelque chose d’inédit. Qui ne serait ni une reprise, ni un hommage, ni une réactualisation, mais plutôt le souvenir lointain d’une mélodie."
"Yasmine Hamdan, le disque, s’est fait en deux temps. Dans un premier temps, Yasmine a travaillé avec le guitariste Kevin Sedikki dans un esprit plutôt folk, rêvant à un certain intimisme très imprégné par le romantisme des années soixante-dix (Beirut, Bala Tantanat, Shoei). Marc Collin a ensuite posé sur ces mélodies une matière électronique, ses synthétiseurs redonnant relief et aux titres.
Le reste de l’album est le fruit d’une intense collaboration studio entre Yasmine et Marc. À partir de la collection de synthétiseurs vintage de Marc (notamment le fantastique Roland Jupiter 8 et le Chroma Polaris), ils ont choisi de créer un univers sonore qui puisse accompagner les fluctuations de la voix de Yasmine, asseoir la langue arabe dans un environnement libre de codes. Les mélodies arabes, parfois complexes ou tonales, se posent ici sur des accords très simples aux tonalités pop. La voix devient matière. Les boucles rythmiques sont créées à partir de sons organiques qui ne rappellent que de très loin des percussions «ethniques». Sur NAG, Ya Nediya, Samar, In Kan Fouadi, on pense davantage à la grande époque du label 4AD (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil)."
