Bay Area startup Threadsy launched at the TechCrunch 50 conference in 2009, garnering solid attention and interest as a leading integrator of email, Twitter, Facebook and IM all in one web application. Threadsy doesn't currently offer personalisation so I wrote a series of bookmarklets for the browser, that inject fresh color palettes and change some usability elements (for the better, in my opinion!). Over 1,000 Threadsy users have checked out the themes so far.

I also spend a lot of side time in advisory discussions with Threadsy. This is a non-formal strategy and product-level discussion, meaning unpaid. For an invite, click the link above.

I established a hyper-local social network in the SOMA district of San Francisco, for local dog owners to meet each other and join social events with their canines. No profit motive other than enjoyment of life with dog. With a little under 50 members it's currently low-touch and hosted on Ning, likely moving off to a private site in the near future.

I also spend some of my side time in advisory discussions with other Bay Area and Australian startups. From time to time I'm able to connect entrepreneurs to the angel and VC funding community, or advise on social strategy as it relates to effective product and marketing functions. Includes FoodPair http://foodpair.com (US), Secure Kids Net (Australia, pre-launch), PubliTweet http://publitweet.com (US).

Just realized it was also Mother's Day in Australia. I'll call you, Mum...sorry!

Anyway, we did a bit of celebrating here too; happily capped off Mother's Day with a delicious pot-roasted shoulder joint of lamb, done in white wine, tomatoes and olives (Provençal of course); with Jodie's full house mac 'n' cheese and a medley of veggies; downed with a couple glasses of 2009 William Harrison Winery Simpatico.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Apr. 16, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that privately-held Nukona, Inc., is now part of Symantec. Symantec completed its acquisition of Nukona, a provider of mobile application management (MAM), on April 2, 2012. The acquisition agreement between Symantec and Nukona was announced on March 20, 2012.

Although it's fun to work on the future of the company... well sometimes I get paid for this, too. :)

When you darn, you are essentially reweaving the textile

What you do is a row of stitches in one direction, and then weave the next row through those (under, over, under, over, so on) in the perpendicular direction. (from Craftzine http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2009/03/darn_it.html)

So, now I have a pair of custom Adidas Campus II's. Cool!

Great shot from Flickr user "phil_mcgrew". No wonder it was enjoyably rowdy around here last night. I'd embed a small photo linking to the page but the user doesn't allow it - just click...

Finally got a lazy day to myself for some slow cooking of tasty salted pig parts. In the pot goes 5lbs of pork butt (shoulder), oregano, cumin, salt, pepper, chili powder, lime juice and one half, orange juice and halves, small halved onion, bay leaves. Simmer and then lid on braise for 2.5 hours at 300ºF. Then remove the meat, pull apart with two forks and broil (grill under a salamander) until golden brown and crispy whilst reducing the braising liquid to a glaze; toss with the glaze and eat with whatever you like... pico de gallo in soft tacos, or guacamole with rice and beans, etc. Squeeze a bit of lime juice on fresh to dress. Wash down with a cold Modelo Especial. And smile.

Braise:

Pull: Discard the solids, use two forks to make short work of the “pulling” (shredding)

Reduce: Whilst all that pulling is going on, simmer and reduce the braising liquid to a glaze

Broil: Also known in Australia as grilling (under a salamander). Get that pork on a tray, toss in the glaze (literally) and then on high for - 5 minutes, turn, 5 minutes

¡Acquí!

Vintage espresso machines often take quite a bit of upkeep, but if you love coffee it's a rewarding and meditative time... the results are completely worth it.

US Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum made a surprise leap ahead to practically tie Mitt Romney in yesterday’s Iowa caucus results. Now people are searching to find out more about him and discovering THAT result which makes comedy show hosts like Jon Stewart giggle. But rather than blame Google (or Bing), as Santorum has in the past, much of the fault remains with his own campaign.

I also couldn't help but giggle at the top Google result for "Santorum".

A beautiful sunset seen from the corner of Berry and 5th St in San Francisco tonight. As my Dad (ex-Navy) used to say “Red sky at morning, sailor's warning; red sky at night, sailor's delight”. I predict no snow for Tahoe tomorrow, aka good weather for San Francisco...

Yep, confirmed. Yes, I'm on a conference call with China, reviewing software designs :)))

To answer this question I shall begin by giving a brief description of what is meant by “The Pleistocene diet”. Starting with what or should I say when the Pleistocene epoch was in our history. The Pleistocene era is the earlier of the two epochs of the Quaternary Period, from about 2 million to 10,000 years ago, and was characterized by the formation of widespread glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere and by the appearance of humans. [...]
The Pleistocene diet refers to a diet which is similar to that of the humans at that time, without the invention of food preparation or cooking. It’s principle is that it is based around foods that were readily available, “on the table” during our evolution, foods such as meat, fish, fowl, and the roots and fruits of many plants. As whilst food stuffs such as grains, beans and potatoes are useful sources of energy, our bodies are not adapted to utilising them as a food source [...]
the Pleistocene diet, in my opinion is useful as a reference point and provides important clues to the "baseline" levels and ratios of nutrients needed for health. Suggesting that we should be eating a lot of plant foods and modest amounts of game meat, with a reduced intake of salt and refined foods, and despite it perhaps not being practical to follow it to its entirety, with an increased understanding of it, it can aid us to lead healthier and more natural lives, optimizing our surroundings and what our bodies are able to deal with.

(from: http://darwinstudents.blogspot.com/2009/06/pleistocene-diet-recipe-for-diet-a...

I've been hearing more about people returning the bulk of their daily intake (majority of plate) back to plants and unrefined foods lately, including this and the "Paleo" eating. Considering that my son eats nothing but vegetables, lean meats, fruits and milk and is the picture of health (for now, he's only 7 months) I'm thinking I might try reducing refined grains significantly... Thoughts?

Begin forwarded message:

Mike Lasky from SF MTA reported on The Bike Sharing Pilot being set up in Mission Bay and other areas South of Market. Under the program, you will be able to join the Bike Share Pilot for a membership fee (small) ranging from 24 hours to one year. As a member, you will be able to pick up a bike, ride it and return it to any other bike station for a sliding fee depending upon the time you use the bike. All of the fees are to be determined. The purpose of the program is to help bikers to get from, for example, the Caltrain Station to Sales Force.com or BART to 185 Berry quickly and easily.  In the Mission Bay Area, there will be bike stations...maybe...at UCSF near the Farmer's Market, Caltrain Station, Pier 40, 4th and Berry, 2nd and Townsend, 7th and Townsend. As more businesses develop, more bike stations will be added. The system should be launched the summer of 2012. For more information, contact Matt Lasky at <xxxx>@sfmta.com or www.sfmta.com/bikesharing.

In a highly livable city, a decent bike sharing program, such as that wildly successful program in Paris, is a great way to help remove a few more cars off the already clogged and dirty streets.
