    [ARTICLES] GIRLS GOT KICKS BOOK!

[ARTICLES] GIRLS GOT KICKS BOOK!: "

Sneaker Freakettes of the world, it's time to STAND UP! Lori Lobenstine (Female Sneaker Fiend) along with photographer extraordinaire Amanda Lopez are about to slam head-on into the publication world, with their new book ‘Girls Got Kicks'. It's all about breaking down stereotypes, and with these two behind the wheel, who knows what will happen. We caught up with the ladies as they trek the globe to capture the true essence of female sneaker collecting. Lads, step aside, sisters are doin' it for themselves!

    ::LORI LOBENSTINE - AUTHOR::

Hey Lori, did you ever imagine just how many ladies were into this cuckoo sneaker craze?
As a youth worker and basketball coach I knew that everywhere I went there were girls who were crazy about their kicks. So doing the math, I knew there were a lot of us! I still think there are way more girls out there into kicks than we realize. So many of them aren’t online, they’re just out there doing their own badass thing, running under our radar and repping in their own ways. Having said that, I never knew Female Sneaker Fiend would become such a meeting place and online community for girls and women all over the world. That’s been really cool and it’s taught me a lot…

Why was the website such a necessity back when you launched in 2005?
It was a real bridge between girls and the online sneaker community. Most of the other sites at that time were so male-dominated that many girls got turned off by being disrespected or having to wade through stupid pics of near-naked girls wearing kicks. We needed a site that truly reflected the real female sneaker fiends. Now it’s a home base for a lot of girls who also rep on other sites. They come back to FSF for the community, to buy and sell on the largest marketplace for small sneakers, to learn about getting into the industry and to check out the competition.

Has the battle for smaller sizes and more diversity within the female footwear category been won?
Well, it depends. I think we’ve come a long way in two directions. Firstly, the growth of small brands that are creating diverse product for women like Booji, Keep and Milkshake Kicks and secondly, the growth of the big brands, particularly Nike, finally paying attention to their female customers with nice colabs, more options and finer attention to detail. Female sneaker fiends are looking for the hottest and most exclusive shit just like their male counterparts. I’m not saying that’s the only way to be a fiend, but for those girls, having the exclusives come out in small sizes would be HUGE. It’s a more gender-neutral view of sneakers, and I think it better represents the sneaker fiend community at large. The second direction I want to see growth in is marketing. None of these brands that spend billions on marketing their product actually advertise their women’s sneakers, with the occasional exception of certain performance shoes. Yes, they send info to sneaker sites like FSF and SF so we can spread the word, but when have you ever seen them actually advertise a women’s sneaker? It’s a vicious cycle. The sneakers don’t get advertised, so they don’t sell, so they don’t get funding for development, so they’re not great kicks, so female sneaker fiends don’t buy them, so…

It ends up driving you bananas! Why continue the fight for FSFs worldwide?

It’s fun! As much as I love sneakers, I love the female sneaker fiends just as much. I feel like an insider sociologist. I’m fascinated and moved by this passion we have for our kicks and all the different ways that females express it. And the fact that it’s less expected, that it’s overlooked, that it challenges some stereotypes… that just makes it more intense and more interesting. It’s pretty easy to like kicks if you’re a guy. But if you’re a girl with a sick collection you’re going to face-down some folks who really doubt you. So I love female sneaker fiends for that glint in their eye, that swagger in their step and the extra knowledge they have to have for when guys assume they don’t.

You’re about to capture that essence with your new publication Girls Got Kicks. How important will this be for the movement?
Girls Got Kicks aims to capture the style, passion and variety of female sneaker fiends in a book that collages words and images, the young and old, the famous and ordinary. From girls in small towns who thought they were the only girl out there who loved kicks to girls who spend countless hours on sneaker websites, from fashionistas to tomboys, graff artists to indie rockers, Girls Got Kicks will be a tribute to females who have reshaped footwear in their own image. Our community is as rich and colorful as our collections, and we want folks to see that. In terms of the book’s impact on the movement, that’s a great question. I think anytime a movement can see itself and celebrate itself, it grows and deepens. I think the book will not only help connect us, but help push aside stereotypes about who a female sneaker fiend is. I’m constantly inspired by all the ways that girls represent themselves with their kicks. I hope Girls Got Kicks inspires them as much as they inspire me.

Preach on! So what inspired you to get the project off the ground?
Bobbito Garcia’s book, Where’d You Get Those? inspired both the website and the upcoming book. In fact, the site has been partly about building the community to the place where it is now, both in terms of size and connectivity, so that the book can properly reflect the whole scene. As much as I love Where’d You Get Those?, Bobbito managed to include hundreds of photos without a single female. He said he didn’t know any female sneaker fiends. It made me swear that never again would someone not know how to find us. The website has done that, and now a book will make our presence more permanent.

Tell us about hooking up with the photographer Amanda Lopez…
I hooked up with Amanda Lopez in two ways. First, I found her when I looked for photographers from the Younity Collective, a great group of female artists. Then I saw she had also done that phenomenal Mama Clothing Lookbook with the Fall/Winter ‘08 ‘La Vida Loca’ theme. I was really impressed, and I could tell she was great at capturing the essence and vibe of her subjects. I checked in with both Toofly (cofounder of Younity) and Gabriella (Mama Clothing) and they gave her rave reviews. Then I reached out to see if she was interested. I thought I had a chance because of her cool ‘Vans: True Story’ project, and sure enough, she was intrigued. It’s been an amazing partnership. She’s a fantastic photographer and nothing stops her. Already I’ve seen her face down in pouring rain, traffic, poor light, a garbage-ridden photo-shoot site and a red-eye flight. She’s phenomenal.

Are you hoping to branch out globally with your search or will this be purely US-based?
We’re going global. The images in the book will be a mix of Amanda’s portraits and shots sent in by fiends from all over – even if we can’t get Amanda to you, we can get you in the book! We haven’t determined all of the photo shoot sites, but the book will feature interviews and photos from all over the globe. More details on photo shoots will be forthcoming, but images and interview requests can always be sent to photoshoot@femalesneakerfiend.com.

You’re yet to break a solid book deal for Girls Got Kicks – what’s the next step for the magic to happen?
Well, we have to do the work. So far, we’ve been putting together what we hope is a powerful, irresistible product. We haven’t taken it to publishers yet, but we have some good contacts and we’re optimistic. We want them to understand that this isn’t a niche book: that sneakers speak to a wide variety of girls and women all over the world, and that the book is about the people, not just the kicks. We’re also looking at the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing, because that is so much more doable these days. The quality and affordability of self-publishing and distribution have improved tremendously, so everything’s on the table right now. We’re really excited!

So are we! Is this book going to make the big brands and our male counterparts take female sneaker collectors seriously?
Great question. I guess I’d have to say at the end of the day, it’s really about us. So if the sneaker companies take notice, gravy. If our beloved male counterparts buy it for their sisters, girlfriends or moms, perfect. But if the brands continue to think we all live for pink sneakers, and if guys want to go on with their ideas that we stumbled onto our James Worthy NBs by accident, well, that’s on them. The book is so WE KNOW. No one can take it away from us. We’re here, and we’re kicking down barriers all over the world with skills and collections to match anybody’s.

    ::AMANDA LOPEZ - PHOTOGRAPHER::

Hey Amanda, last time we spoke you’d just finished off your True Story Series with Vans and now you’ve jumped into working on this massive Girls Got Kicks project. How did you become involved?
I got involved thanks to Lori. She had seen some of my Vans Shoe shots via the great ladies over at the Younity Collective and later, my work with Mama Clothing. She first approached me about sharing the Vans work on the site then through email exchanges, I found out she was working on the Girls Got Kicks project and she asked if I would be interested in contributing. Each lady obviously has a different story to tell and as a photographer it is your job to capture that essence

How did you approach each shoot?
Lori and I really wanted to try and capture the ladies in locations that were personal to them. I really like to photograph people in their own environments so it was really important to me that we try and do that with this project. When someone is comfortable in their environment, that sense of being comfortable comes out in the shot. Before each individual shoot, Lori or myself would talk with the girls and ask them about their collection and where they would like to be photographed. There is a level of spontaneity that comes when you give the subject that type of control but I enjoy shooting that way so I felt really comfortable showing up to a location and working with the elements to try and create a portrait. We photographed a lot of girls in their bedrooms or homes, in their neighbourhoods, the shoe stores where they work, on trains they would ride into the city to buy their kicks etc. Pretty much we would go wherever the subject wanted us to go for the sake of the portrait.

What challenges did you face in creating the best possible outcome for each image?
Every single girl we’ve photographed has been super sweet so the shoots have been fun and I feel like we’ve gotten some nice images because of the good vibes. The only real challenge that I think we’ve faced however is time. Since we are really trying to represent the diversity of the female sneaker culture we really want to go all over the U.S. and eventually the world, to photograph. With that said, when we travel we only have a limited amount of time in each city so we are only able to photograph a limited number of girls. In a perfect world it would be awesome to spend at least a couple of weeks in each of the cities we go to.

    Makai

    You can call me… Makai.

I identify as… Genderqueer, with more masculine qualities than feminine.

As far as third-person pronouns go, … I prefer “ze” and “hir,” or none.

I’m attracted to… anyone… masculine, feminine, androgyne… not by looks, but by personality. I am pansexual, so I can be attracted to anyone; I focus on who they are as a person, not what they are or what body parts they have.

When people talk about me, I want them to… realize that gender, sex, and gender expression are totally different things that come in a huge variety. Just because you’re born male doesn’t mean you have to be masculine, just because you look feminine doesn’t mean you have to identify as female, etc.

I want people to understand… that there are many different gender benders out there that will express themselves in more than one way. So don’t be closed-minded and societal about how people “should” be and dress.

    About Makai

I’m a young adult, and still trying to figure out what to do with my life. I know I don’t conform to society’s norms, and I’m proud of it.

    Moving Forward

Happy New Years! This is my first post of 2010. I have been asked more than a little bit what is The Butch Caucus. So here's the unabridged explanation.

Q:What is the Butch Caucus ?
A: We are an unofficial association of butch, stud,ag,dom, ftm, genderqueer, and transcurious persons.

Q:Who are the members of The Butch Caucus?
A:Any butch, stud,ag,dom, ftm, genderqueer, and trans-curious who has the courage to identify and introduce themselves to a butch, stud,ag,dom, ftm, genderqueer, or trans-curious that they don't know in order to show respect is considered for membership.

Q:What are the benefits of membership?
    A:Quite simply, influence.

[Ed. Note: We are a oxymorons. There are few of us, but I see us everywhere. And when I do, to the few of you that I have had the chance to meet in person, I introduce myself. I'm just like you fam. I'm out here in the world and obviously gay/queer. I get the same, looks, comments, gestures. I get challenged everyday by something or someone. Am I too hard to be up in this college's ladies room. I sometimes question what people see when they see me. Am I passing today.]

If we can greet, each other, regularly meet with each other, and show each other respect with no less than a nod. Then we will have created a bond. The same principle found in sorority, fraternity, family, company, or platoon. If we could move at once, in unison, We can shake the ground. Tilt the scale. Swing the vote.

Let us consider this a mutually beneficial relationship and create the network.

If you see a butch, stud,ag,dom, ftm, genderqueer, or transcurious person, that you've never met before.
Hit me up and tell me about it. I want to know how you felt and what you said.

    Q:What comes after that?
A: Let's see how this goes.

The Art of Keeping a Stud.

I follow butch stuff.  I actively seek out things that are not only queer but queer or gay in the way that it relates to masculinity in women.

That's my official stance on why the f*ck I stay on Craigslist.

The Art of Keeping a Good Stud is the perfect example of what I would consider a payoff for such tenacious browsing.

This is the word for word quote from the entire listing. I'm not even gonna correct the spelling.  I'm not sayings she's 1000% correct or this is the way, but she's on to something.

    READ!

The Art of Keeping a good stud

"I write this post in hopes of helping opther feminine women understand how to keep a good woman, specifically a sexy strong stud. About me, I am very strong willed and minded I have dated women exclusively for 9 years and I realized a good stud is hard to find. I dated fanatics, possible drug rehabilitators, people who thought they ha dit going on. LOL..I even dated someone who I had fun with but at the end of the day I needed more more my 12 year old son and future. Although the relationship I will describe, I am no longer in, I can look back and remember the good times. I met "Shane" (name not real) at a time where I had met plenty of women but none quit perked my attention. My first mistake was I had dated so long I doubted i could never find that "one" so I didn't properly excercise how to act when one I feell for" came. I didn't lay out my my plan or what I would be willing to do but I talked about it. I got scared to love, I should have taken care of me more for her( I began to get comfortable), I didn't allow me to blossom with this woman who I loved so much. We look back and laugh, but my heart still skips a beat when I smell her cologne in the streets, it doesn't quite smell like it does when she wears it. I don't thinks she ever knew the true me that I love to cook, clean, be attentive, it was almost as if I choose to run her away. Studs will be hard and act hard but at the end of the day, they want to be pampered, loved, respected and I think many of us go wrong in not claiming them as if they were a man. I know many of you women are like "WHAT" look I know being with a woman is fundamnetally different but at times I would talk back in ways I would never to a man when I dated one, my family was accepting but my fathers approval or lack there or wasn't as flexible as when I had dated a man. I write this because stubborness doesn't bring love. -Terriisa

    Meet the Caucus: Zanele Muholi

    ZANELE

Zanele Muholi was born in Umlazi, Durban [like Capetown a township in South Africa], in 1972. She completed an Advanced Photography course at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown and held her first solo exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2004.

She has worked as a community relations officer for the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW), a black lesbian organisation based in Gauteng, and as a photographer and reporter for Behind the Mask, an online magazine on lesbian and gay issues in Africa. Her work represents the black female body in a frank yet intimate way that challenges the history of the portrayal of black women's bodies in documentary photography.

In 2008 she had a solo show at Le Case d'Arte, Milan, and in 2009 she exhibited alongside Lucy Azubuike at the CCA Lagos, Nigeria. She was the recipient of the 2005 Tollman Award for the Visual Arts, the first BHP Billiton/Wits University Visual Arts Fellowship in 2006, and was the 2009 Ida Ely Rubin Artist-in-Residence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Recent News - The opening of an exhibition at Constitution Hill turned sour when Arts and Culture Minister Lulu Xingwana stormed out of the exhibition, calling the work "immoral"

Foxxjazell stands 5’10 and is a striking mocha beauty that just so happens to be transgender. However, don’t brush off this young talented rapper because of her gender.Noted is one of the first transgender artists to recieve mainstream success, Foxxjazell performed for thousands of people at the world famous Arena nightclub in Hollywood. She also opened for 90’s divas Robin S., Rupaul and CeCe Peniston. Point Blank, this kid has garned the attention of TMZ and XXL magazine just to name a few.

Foxxjazell Keva Jackson was born in Birmingham, AL from a family of hardworking hustlers. Both her mother and father worked all types of odds jobs to keep food in her mouth. At the age 6, she became influenced by the likes of Salt n Pepa, Michael Jackson and Madonna. “I would lock myself in my room and pretend I was performing in front of millions of screaming fans. “Her parents didn’t share the same vision that she did instead they encouraged her to pursue a career more “logical” like teaching or nursing. By the age 17, Foxxjazell graduated from high school with honors and was looking to conquer life as an entertainer. Her influences had advanced to 2pac, DaBrat, TLC and Biggie Smalls.

She took a one-way ticket to Hollywood with less than $20 in her purse. While in Hollywood, she started off modeling with a few print ads and also booked a few music videos doing background work. She quickly became discouraged when she realized these gigs didn’t lead her anywhere. A change had to be made. The change came in the form of 14 year-old Maurice Tito Lopez, a runaway kid with big dream of making it big. The two young artists quickly teamed up and began making and performing music together. They eventually formed a group named One20five with two other local rappers. One20five performed at various venues through out Los Angeles but eventually disbanded in late 2004. Since then, Foxxjazell has performed in the historic Homorevolution tour 07 that hit cities such as San Diego,Houston,Dallas, New Mexico and Phoenix. In 2008, she released her debut album "Introducing....Foxxjazell" which featured the hit singles "Feel the vibe" & "Priority".Her music videos have been in rotation MTV,Logo,HereTV,Fuse and Qtube just to name a few.

"Feel the Vibe" also recieved heavy rotation on the radio. She also appeared on the Tyra Banks show to talk about queer hip-hop and the politics of the music industry that she has had to endure. At the start of 2008 she toured with Homorevolution 08 and The Pretty Thugz tour and which she headlined. She was also recently featured in XXL magazine,IN magazine and CLIK magazine. Her current single "Spilt Enz" is already recieving radio play while she is busy at work on her 2nd album "Boy,girl, whateva".  Lookout 4 this girl because she's about to serve it up in a major way.

    Native American Code of Ethics

As I develop the tenants and bylaws of The Butch Caucus I often look to the founding principles of great cultures and morality precedents set by great leaders. In my research I found this.

The Native American Code of Ethics

    1. Rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often. The Great Spirit will listen, if you only speak.

    2. Be tolerant of those who are lost on their path. Ignorance, conceit, anger, jealousy and greed stem from a lost soul. Pray that they will find guidance.

    3. Search for yourself, by yourself. Do not allow others to make your path for you. It is your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.

    4. Treat the guests in your home with much consideration. Serve them the best food, give them the best bed and treat them with respect and honor.

    5. Do not take what is not yours whether from a person, a community, the wilderness or from a culture. It was not earned nor given. It is not yours.

    6. Respect all things that are placed upon this earth - whether it be people or plant.

    7. Honor other people's thoughts, wishes and words. Never interrupt another or mock or rudely mimic them. Allow each person the right to personal expression.

    8. Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative energy that you put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you.

    9. All persons make mistakes. And all mistakes can be forgiven.

    10. Bad thoughts cause illness of the mind, body and spirit. Practice optimism.

    11. Nature is not FOR us, it is a PART of us. They are part of your worldly family.

    12. Children are the seeds of our future. Plant love in their hearts and water them with wisdom and life's lessons. When they are grown, give them space to grow.

    13. Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of your pain will return to you.

    14. Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the test of one's will within this universe.

    15. Keep yourself balanced. Your Mental self, Spiritual self, Emotional self, and Physical self - all need to be strong, pure and healthy. Work out the body to strengthen the mind. Grow rich in spirit to cure emotional ails.

Text Me Your Love, Email me your STD status.

I had my own STD scare in college. I had some risky sex and found out through rumors and other networks that I girl I had been with had HPV. I marched my ass to the clinic and put my entire sexual history on the books. I remember having to confess all my dirty dyke secrets to a homophobic west indian physicians assistant. I told her that my face was were disease may have been, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO !

There was no shame in my game. I got every test known to man that day and came up roses (to this day!). What the triflin hoe didn't know is that my first girlfriend in life had HPV but since my EX was a grown ass woman we practiced safe sex. I knew then, just as I know now that you can still have a sex life with an STD. Thank god for honest women.

But this. Wow. I personally consider this a good thing. For all the wimps, punks, and ignoramuses who can't tell you that they have an STD before you have sex there's a new anonymous way to let folks know that you got the bug and they might too.

    At least you know right?

Each season, Reebok chooses a contemporary artist and reintroduces their work through a collection. For Spring/Summer 2010, Reebok chose Jean-Michel Basquait, and they could not have made a better choice.

Acknowledged as the first artist of African descent to gain international recognition, Reebok decided to take inspiration from Jean-Michel’s ‘Untitled’ (Suite of Fourteen Drawings) collection. For the men, they chose the Pump Omni Lite, BB4600 Hi, and for the women, they chose the Pump Aerobic Trainer Mid Lite. Both shoes are all white and having pieces of his drawings placed on certain places on the design. There are also four t-shirts available in the collection. Look for these to hit select Reebok retailers this month.

    Vice Interview with Karl Lagerfeld

vice interview karl lagerfeld Vice Interview with Karl Lagerfeld

Bruce LaBruce of Vice recently sat down with fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld for an interesting interview in Paris. Speaking on a wide array of topics, we get to know the legendary figure in a more personal light with a lengthy piece covering several intriguing subjects. Excerpts from the interview are available below while the actual piece in its entirety can be found here.

You’ve been famous for quite some time, but the whole landscape of celebrity has changed so dramatically in recent years.

That’s part of our life, our culture.

Do you think it’s become kind of toxic?

Yes, but you cannot fight against it. There’s a price you have to pay for fame, and people who don’t want to pay that price can get in trouble. I accepted the idea of celebrity because of a French expression: “You cannot have the butter and the money for the butter.”

What does being politically correct mean to you?

It means people talking about charities. Do it, be charitable, but don’t make a subject of conversation out of it because then you bore the world to death. It’s very unpleasant. But I don’t go out a lot so I’m not so exposed to people.

And being isolated is not a problem for you?

I have no problem. That’s the miracle of my life. There are no problems, only solutions—good ones or bad ones.

    Selectism - wings-horns-chambray-parka-01

Wings & Horns had a barnstormer of a autumn/winter collection – to paraphrase Mike Tyson, the blog love was impetuous, the styling impregnable and the clothes just ferocious. Their SS10 collection hasn’t had that effect on folks, but there’s still more than a few great pieces to get your hands on. Take this parka for instance, while folks are getting bored of chambray shirts – or to be more accurate, getting bored of blogs hyping chambray shirts – a chambray parka is still interesting enough to get the nod of approval. Sleep Box

    Selectism - Sleep Box

For the traveller who needs a quick hit of shut eye, these mobile pods called “Sleep Box” may solve the issue of having to check into a hotel for a short period of time. Dubai Airport looks to be one of the first to receive their deployment of “Sleep Boxes.” Chillnite News is reporting that they’re receiving between 50 and 70 of them in the coming month. “Sleep Boxes are small cubicle spaces that are available at public places like Airports, train stations etc where people can book the ‘box’ for set time period to catch some sleep. It offers a small resting space while you wait for that connection in few hours. Ofcourse it doesnt come with attached washroom…you can use a public one for that. The concept is not new as Japan already has ‘Capsule Hotels’ that serve the same purpose. The only difference is that Sleep Boxes are bigger in size and give space to sit and sleep.”

    BIBICO by Américo Neves

Américo Neves, a graphic designer from Macau has released his series of hand-painted resin figures named Bibico.

“My series are composed of one 15″ size and the little ones as 3″ size made of resin. They are all unique due to hand-painted. In other words, they are all different.”

There’s something about the figure that reminds me of Shin Tanaka, although it’s probably just the hoody aspect of the character, an awesome figure nonetheless :]

With plenty of rip-roaring '80s surfer colours and spray paint midsole action, the skate shoe was featured on Sneaker Freaker late last year in royal blue, but since the turn of the decade, Emerica has released three new colour combos. As seen in Issue 17 of Sneaker Freaker.

So You Want My Job: EMT

Once again we return to our So You Want My Job series, in which we interview men who are employed in desirable jobs and ask them about the reality of their work and for advice on how men can live their dream.

Today we hear from Nate Dionne, an EMT who works for the busiest EMS system in South Carolina. He gives us a look at the job of our vital first responders.

    1. Tell us a little about yourself (Where are you from? How old are you? Where did you go to school? Describe your job and how long you’ve been at it, etc).

I am 21 years old and originally from New Hampshire, although I now live and work in South Carolina. I began as a volunteer EMT-Basic in NH and moved to a busier system for the experience. I have been an EMT for over 3 years now. I now work for the largest and busiest system in South Carolina. In a nutshell, EMT’s treat the sick and wounded. This can range from “Oh my leg’s hurt for 3 weeks and I’m out of pain meds” to heart attacks, to mass casualty incidents where hundreds of people can be involved.

    2. Why did you want to become an EMT? When did you know it was what you wanted to do?

I began as a volunteer firefighter, and began volunteering for my town’s ambulance as well. I enjoyed volunteering because I felt like I was part of something bigger than myself, something important, and because I was giving back to my hometown. I liked being both a firefighter and EMT, but soon I began to love EMS. I thought that doing it for free was nice, but getting paid to do it would be even better. I feel fortunate that I found a career I love while I was so young.

    3. Is there a hierarchy in your job? Can you move up to different positions and what are those positions?

There are 3 different levels of EMT, Basic, Intermediate and Paramedic. EMT-Basics can take vitals, splint broken bones, bandage wounds, and administer oxygen. At the EMT-Intermediate level, you can do all of that plus start IV’s, administer fluids, and medicine to help diabetics whose blood sugar dropped too low. Some Intermediates are allowed to push certain cardiac medications and defibrillate (shock the heart). EMT-Paramedics do all of that, plus intubate (place a tube in the trachea to secure an airway), push more medications than I can possibly list, use a cardiac monitor to determine a heart rhythm and treat accordingly, and so on. With higher certification levels come more capabilities, and more responsibility.

There is usually room for advancement. There is always a rank structure which mirrors that in any other line of work. Your supervisors may be called a manager or simply supervisor or have a rank. We follow a somewhat military structure; we have 3 sergeants under a lieutenant for each shift.

    4. If a man wishes to become an EMT, how should he best prepare? What is the training for EMT’s like? Do you need a degree? Are there special schools or EMT programs within a school?

Usually technical colleges are the places to find paramedic programs, where you can get all of your classes, from EMT-Basic to Paramedic. There are often EMT classes available through local EMS services or agencies. Technical colleges offer an associates degree in Emergency Medical Technology along with your Paramedic certification. Having a degree often means more pay from the start (at my service having a degree gets you an extra 5%, but it varies.) The training ranges from a couple of months (EMT-B and EMT-I) to about 2 years (EMT-B through Paramedic.) I am currently an EMT-I, and when I go back to school for my Paramedic certification, I face another year of classes.

    5. Once you obtain the proper training, how do you go about finding a job?

Many services post on job-finding websites. Or look on the website of the service you’re interested in. I found out my service was hiring by word of mouth. But if you look, they’re not hard to find.

    6. What’s the job market like for EMT’s? How hard/easy is it to land a job?

I’ll begin by saying there is a shortage of Paramedics in almost every part of the country. With many 911 services, they are looking for Paramedics, so it may be harder to find a job as an EMT-B or I. There are private services all over the country. Private services do non-emergent work, meaning they take elderly or chronically ill patients to doctors appointments, dialysis etc. Some private services have contracts with municipalities or other local governments to run their 911 response as well. Many towns have their own ambulance; sometimes the fire department and EMS are one in the same. Others are called “3rd service,” which is what I work for. We are owned and operated by the county, as opposed to a town or a private service. Jobs are often very competitive, especially with high-profile services. If you’re looking to make lots of money, you’re looking at the wrong profession. Most EMT’s don’t get paid well at all. Paramedics can make decent money, but it depends on where you work and your years of experience. Many EMT’s and Paramedics work two (or more) jobs.

    7. What’s the retention rate like for your job? What qualities do EMT’s have that stick with the job and excel at it?

Many EMT’s and Paramedics work for the same systems their whole careers. Others jump around a lot before they settle down. Working in an emergent (911) system is pretty much recession-proof, especially when you work for a municipality or other government-type. You have to be in decent physical shape, as you need to lift patients, carry heavy equipment up flights of stairs or over long distances. To be a successful EMT you need to very dedicated to your profession; medicine is an ever-changing field, and it takes a lot of work to keep up with new equipment and techniques. People call EMS when they are gravely ill or injured, so compassion and understanding are big parts of what we do. You must be able to keep cool under pressure; remember, you are walking towards chaos while everyone else is running away.

    8. There are other public service jobs that are somewhat related to your field of work-nurse, firefighter, police officer. What makes a man choose to become an EMT over other options?

Where I’m from, being a firefighter and an EMT or Paramedic are often one and the same. I would like to eventually move home and be a FF/EMT, but I need experience first. In systems where the two are separate, many people choose EMS over police or fire because, quite frankly, we make more money. In most systems, Paramedics make more than police officers or firefighters. Nurses make more money than Paramedics, but many of us stay in EMS because we enjoy being in the field, rather than the hospital. We are the first responders, the first on the scene. We treat and stabilize patients, then deliver them to the ER doctors and nurses.

    9. What is the best part of your job?

The satisfaction of helping someone. To be honest, it’s not like TV, where we save a life every day. The calls where you make a difference between life and death are few and far between. But when you do, it is a wonderful feeling. It feels like your whole career is worth that one save.

    10. What is the worst part of your job?

The abuse of the system. People call 911 all the time for things that do not require an ambulance. Some are lonely older folks who have no one to check on them, others are drug-seekers looking for pain meds. People sometimes use the ER as their primary means of medical care because they don’t have insurance. It puts pressure on the system, and keeps resources busy when they could be helping somebody who needs it.

    11. What’s the work/family/life balance like?

Long, weird hours and low pay can have an impact on your family. I work two jobs, and therefore have an aggravated girlfriend waiting for me to get a day off. If you get into EMS after you’ve already been married, the divorce rate is very high. The key is having a spouse or significant other that understands your love of the job and your commitment to it. If you have a supportive family, you will be able to maintain a harmonious balance between work and home. Also, there is a camaraderie among EMT’s and Paramedics that is rarely found in any other profession. I have made some great friends here that I know I’ll keep for life.

    12. What is the biggest misconception people have about your job?

We are not ambulance drivers. We find that term offensive. It implies we have no more training than Drivers Ed. We have trained long and hard to get to where we are. We don’t just get to drive the woo-woo truck really fast.

    13. Any other advice, tips, or anecdotes you’d like to share?

In all my rambling on in this article, I may have made this job seem very hard. It is. It can be very hard. But it is also the most rewarding job in the world. I cannot imagine doing anything else with my life. My advice would be to see if you can ride along with your local service before applying to paramedic school. Chances are you know an EMT or Paramedic, or know someone who does. Talk to them about who they are and what they do.

Take these Maritimes for example. Named after the blue used for the upper these have the feel of a pair of Supra’s with a little less flash. And just looking at the leather along the upper you can tell these are soft as a baby’s bottom. The white vulc sole rounds this one out nicely. Chances are these are still made to skate but if you need something to look good while you aren’t on your board these may just be it. Via DC Shoes

    Ninjatown Zipper Charms

Shawnimals and Squibbles Ink + Rotofugi have teamed up on a 16-design series of Ninjatown Zipper Charms set for a soft release on Friday, March 12th in the Shawnimals online shop and at a designer toy store near you!

Ninjatown Zipper Charms are $3.95 USD each. Cases consist of 32 pieces (or in other words, two full sets in each case).

Some charming charms (sorry lol), gotta love the ’stached ninja but it’s a shame to have 6 ninjas in black especially when a few of them have very minor differences in design.

    A beautiful dress.

    Someone wrote…

My body feels like a beautiful dress that belongs to someone else and doesn’t fit me. I want it because it’s pretty but I hate it because it’s not mine. I’m more confused than I’ve ever been.

    What’s your experience?

And what are you thinking about gender right now?

Kidrobot Black – SSUR’s Black & Gold Skull

The next piece from Kidrobot’s Black line is this wicked black and gold skull by Russell Karablan, owner and creative director of SSUR.  Opinion seems divided on the piece, sure it’s different and more of a sculpture than the usual “toys” we’re used to but it’s not exactly original (Secret Base have been producing Skull Heads for quite a while now, and they’re arguably better).

However, would you sooner have KR produce a piece like this, or shovel kinder egg-esque stuff like the awful De La Soul minifigs?  No word on a release date or numbers (expect around 200), so you’ll have to keep an eye on the Kidrobot Black page.
