As nobody ever says, the most important part of a forward journey is never retracing your steps. Poetic? Only if you’ve never read a poem or have taste in the arts that is embarrassing to your friends and family. Like if someone were to ask you to put on dance music and your choice was Color Me Badd, for instance.
Though hacky, the sentiment remains true, which is why we’re very excited to be playing a venue we’ve never played before. A venue some might consider a Los Angeles institution, while others might think of it as that weird building on Sunset by those other less-weird buildings. Established in 1974, Los Globos hosted the first ever legal rave in the United States. The year was 1989 and they called it… Sextacy… and why not? If they had only waited until 1991 they could have raved it up to Color Me Badd. Timing is everything (unless you’re at a rave… then it is meaningless).
The point I’m trying to make is that this place deserves your respect and your patronage and we’re geeked to be playing there on the last day of April, or as I’m sure somebody somewhere calls it, May Day’s Eve. Everybody knows that Monday nights are a ghost town on the east side, so what else have you got to do (don’t answer that)?
We’re working on throwing together a hologram of Biz Markie for the show, but we might only be able to afford Agnes, Agatha, Germaine, or Jack. Sorry.

We’re not your parents (as far as we know). We can’t tell you what to do with your Saturday nights. Sure, you could go to that on-going rave down by the docks that we’ve all heard tales about. Or you could attend one of the many open-mic nights, film festivals, art walks, or plays that occur every 27 minutes in Los Angeles. You might feel like seeing John Carter just to find out what nobody is raving about. Why, you could even go see American Idiot at the Ahmanson Theatre, with its catchy tag line, “Who’s the idiot now?”
But let’s just cut straight through the malark (short for malarkey)… You know and we know that the best thing for all concerned parties is for us to converge on The Satellite at 8:30PM like a pack of starving wild boar whose only craving is for the blood that courses through the weathered veins of rock’n’roll.
It’s a killer lineup on a killer night (see wild boar reference). Don’t miss it!

First of all, thank yous are in order for everybody who came out to the album release party. You guys helped make that one of the best nights this band has ever had. It’s nights like that that keep us going. It meant the world to us and we’ll never forget it.
Alright, enough mushy stuff. Is this rock’n’roll or the Hallmark Channel? (disclaimer: we would love to license our songs to any and all shows/movies on the Hallmark Channel.)
We’ve got a big show coming up at The Satellite, opening for Imperial Teen. Maybe you’ve heard of them and maybe you haven’t, but they are signed to Merge and we need to show both them and The Satellite that we can “put asses in the seats” if you know what I mean.
This is a strong lineup. I think it’s going to be a really fun night. We’d love to see you there.

What was it that Harvey Dent said? “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself release an album.” Let’s do this, kids! Tomorrow night in L.A.’s Fashion District the breakups will have our official ALBUM RELEASE PARTY fashionably late, but worth every minute/penny/mile… etc.
The only reason to miss this show is because you hate fun. Not the band, Fun, but actual fun… you know, happiness through behavior… that fun. And if you hate fun then you probably have fun hating fun and therefore you should still come to the show you fun hating freaks!
See you all tomorrow… ALL OF YOU!!!

what you can do: Point people toward our album on Facebook and Twitter during the day on Tuesday. You can be our street team from the comfort of your computer or smart phone chair.
Tomorrow means different things to different people. To some it’s about any number of Christian martyrs named Valentine, my personal favorite being Saint Valentine of Terni ‘cause he had the most indie cred. To elitists it’s about Chaucer’s Parlement of Foules. And to those people I say… HAVE FUN AT THE LIBRARY, NERDS!!! To romantics it is simply about love, making dinner reservations weeks ahead of time, and having an abundance of birth control handy. To Hallmark, chocolate companies, and stuffed animal manufacturers who exploit Chinese laborers, it’s about $$$. And to single people it’s about blowing your brains out and/or ranting about how much you hate Love Actually.
To the breakups though, it’s all about RUNNING JUMPING FALLING SHOUTING. That’s right, folks, our new album comes out on Valentine’s Day. Leave subtlety to Terrence Malick. We’re called the breakups and we release albums on Saint Valentine’s Day. Deal with it.
Getting RJFS to this point has been a group effort and many of you were part of that group. You know who you are and we love you on V-Day and every other day of the year.
We urge you to alert people of this album’s existence. Spread the word. Write your local congressman, hire skywriters, deface public restrooms. We need all the help we can get. And speaking of which, if you’ve got the time to post a quick link to the Bandcamp page on either Facebook or Twitter sometime during the day tomorrow it would warm our little hearts. I mean just think if you were all able to make our album trend on Twitter. If that happened I might even understand what the means! #thebreakups? Anybody? I have no clue what hashtags do, but I love a good number sign as much as the next man/woman.
HAPPY RUNNING JUMPING FALLING SHOUTING DAY!!!

It’s been a while since the last acoustic video. We’ve been a little busy preparing for the album release. But we’re back with an acoustic version of “amelia (you won’t believe).” It’s the 9th song on the album and it is about cults who prey on people who have nowhere else to turn. Stupid cults! There’s a little bit of a Felix show before the song gets going.

When last we spoke Nic Harcourt was playing a song from our EP over and over again on KCSN. Those were such innocent times, when radio was all the rage. But the river, she keeps on a-flowin’ and it’s about time we put out a new record, don’t you think?
Well it just so happens that’s exactly what we’re about to do. And thanks to our IndieGoGo supporters (you know who you are you beautiful beautiful lovelies) we were able to do it without ending up on the dole just yet. We’re readying the media blitz as we speak. But before all of that happens, we (or others) have started posting tracks here and there to give people a taste of things to come. So get ready for a big list of links. ‘Cause it’s coming. Seriously… you might want to sit down. And not only to prepare yourself, but also because who the hell stands up while reading an email? Are you really THAT busy?
Check out the first single: better off alone
Richard Parsons posted “run from rock’n’roll” on his best of 2011 list (shhhh, don’t tell anybody that it didn’t come out in ‘011.
And the Capitol Records Christmas tree’s days might be numbered, but that shouldn’t keep you from listening to our collaboration with the sweet hurt. It’ll keep you warm during those lonely winter nights. This is a FREE download until January 2nd: winter without you
And lastly, fresh off the presses is a cover of Big Star’s “September Gurls” that Jake recorded with Sara Radle to celebrate what would have been Alex Chilton’s 61st birthday on Wednesday. Listen to it HERE or download it for FREE from our Facebook music page.
Hopefully we’ll be in touch soon with news of a record release show.
Let’s make 2012 the best last year of humanity ever (start making your December 20th dinner reservations now)!

Sara Radle and I recorded this cover of Big Star’s “September Gurls.” We thought we’d post it as a belated birthday homage to Alex Chilton, who would have turned 61 on December 28th. We didn’t get it done in September and we almost didn’t get it done in December (boys got it bad), but we got it in just under the wire.

what: Nic Harcourt’s Daily Connection
Here in the breakups we’ve made it a tradition for our achievements to be random in both occurrence and timing. Remember when our EP reached number 1 at KEUL in Girdwood, AK and WUIC in Chicago? And remember when we reached number 66 on the CMJ Top 200? And remember when we placed a demo of “i don’t want to know” on Psych before there was any way for people to know who the song was by or to buy it? The list goes on and on.
Well it’s happened again. Forty-five months after the release of our smash EP, eat your heart out ep, we’ve finally squeezed through the cracks in the walls of the Los Angeles radio fortress. Nic Harcourt has played “after the fact” three weekends in a row on his Saturday show, Connections, on KCSN 88.5, here in L.A. And, as if that isn’t crazy enough, he has made the song his Daily Connection this week, which means the song will play three times a day all week, at 8am, 12pm, and 5pm, with little bumpers by Nic.
We do realize that it is Wednesday, which is just another example of our impeccable timing. So the song has already been played seven times, but that leaves eight more remaining, so there’s plenty of time to turn on, tune in, and drop out as Beverly Cleary said… or was it Denis/Timothy Leary? Or maybe it was Siri. I’m sure she would say it if you asked her nicely.
We’ve gotta say, even in this day and age, where radio seems like the most archaic thing in the world, if feels pretty darn good to be sandwiched between Fountains of Wayne and Dire Straits on a Tuesday afternoon.

As Michael Jackson once so prophetically (and creepily) said, “this is it.” The long, weird journey that is a crowd-funding campaign comes to an end tonight at 11:59PM Pacific Daylight Time. If you’ve been on the fence about whether or not to donate now would be the time to remove yourself from said fence and pick a side. You’re either with us or with us on the other side of a metaphorical fence. But we are going to proceed under the assumption that you’re with us either way.
So here’s the deal… once this thing is over we’re going to get in touch with those of you who donated enough to get some swag from us to find out things like t-shirt sizes and cover song preferences and so on. We might ask that a little patience be involved in the process because we have to wait until the $$ actually comes through to begin production on these types of things, including the CD itself. But as soon as we’ve got everything in our hands, mass mailings will commence and smiles will be distributed accordingly.
This has been a truly lovely experience and we thank each and every one of you except that one guy who deletes these messages immediately without reading a single word. What a jerk! breakups lesson #473: only insult people who have no idea you’re insulting them. That way you don’t get in fights you have no chance of winning because you are a wimpy weakling.
