I can’t break past 3,670 followers and I blame all the Homestuck posts I’ve been making.
I’m sorry my favorite fandom changes from month to month like a menstrual cycle.
Yes my changes in fandom are akin to my monthly period.
pic unrelated but dedicated to michael
So shortly after I got caught up with Homestuck as a first-time reader, I created a post on deviantArt about my thoughts on the homosexual representation in the series. The thoughts expressed in that post are still mostly true to how I feel, though I would probably have a few more details to add if I were to rewrite it now.
However, since I wrote that piece, I have because somewhat more acquainted with the fandom. And I have something I have got to say.
The fact that people are alarmed/upset by the implications that Dirk might be gay and are further bothered by the excitement fans have towards him as a result of that make me quite sad. Some seem to act almost as if male homosexuality exists purely as a fetish for straight fangirls and thus feel that the inclusion of a homosexual male is simply an act of catering to heterosexual females. Before I go further into this, I would like to point out that while Dirk’s potential homosexuality has never been fetishized in canon, there have been multiple cases in Homestuck of lesbianism being fethishized the pleasure of male characters. In fact, the only female-to-female kiss I can remember in the comic is a case of this. And yet, I’ve never seen this complained about. The male gaze really has done a number on us.
The fact is, the character of Dirk, much like the character of Kanaya, while being likely homosexual is not defined by his sexuality in the actual story. It’s rather more incidental to his character than many of the (possibly) heterosexual characters’ sexuality have been to them. While some fans might be excited about Dirk’s apparent interest in Jake for fetish reasons, many fans that are drawn to him are queer people themselves, who relate to him. What queer person hasn’t had a crush on a possibly straight best friend? I know I have! Multiple times. Additionally, many fans of Dirk are allies who are simply excited about the presence of well-done queer visibility in a series they enjoy.
So before you lash out at someone who seems particularly attached to the pairing of Dirk and Jake, seems a bit protective of viewing Dirk as a homosexual, or simply is posting a lot of a same sex pairing you don’t like, keep in mind that passion for queer visibility often comes from a much deeper place than you might recognize. :)
Nancy I SAW that Homestuck reblog.
Yes I totally just made a Polyvore set for my college you want to fight about it?
