Hej Freunde,

ich finde es schön, dass Euch meine Fotos und meine Musik gefallen und ja, Ihr dürft sie auch gern benutzen.
Nur fragt Ihr mich nicht fragt Ihr nicht alle, unter welchen Bedingungen und/oder wofür ich das möchte. Ich setze mich für freie Inhalte ein, das verschafft vielen unkompliziert den Zugang dazu und dient der Verbreitung. Das heißt aber noch lange nicht, dass Inhalte und Kreativität zum Freiwild deklariert werden.

Auch wenn ein Urheber seine Ergüsse zur Verfügung stellt, bleibt er der Urheber. Ihn mit Füßen zu treten und zu missachten heißt, ihn nicht nur nicht zu fördern (also schmarotzen) sondern die weitere Kreativität zu behindern.

Einen Künstler, den Ihr mögt, solltet Ihr unterstützen und nicht unterdrücken. Zerstört nicht den Boden, der Euch nährt!

Conversation-style e-mail display, like that found in GMail, is heading to Postler – and plans on looking sexy in the process.

Initial work on conversation threads – which groups sequential e-mails from the same ‘conversation’ – is already present in the development builds of Postler.

To go along with threaded display is a new, conversational style theme, created using the ‘Adium Message Style Format’.

The choice of of Adium message Styles for conversation theming a fantastic move, potentially allowing users to create and use their own messaging styles in place of the default Postler theme.

Getting Postler

If you’re keen to test the development builds of Postler you must first be understand what ‘development build’ means: bugs, features that are in flux and instability.

With the big fat disclaimer out of the way you can find the Postler development branch @ code.launchpad.net/postler

Stable builds of Postler are available from the Postler Stable PPA.

Postler theme in Empathy

As Adium Message Styles are used by a number of  instant messengers you are able to download and install the Postler theme in Empathy – the default chat application in both Ubuntu and elementary OS.

To use the Postler theme in Empathy: -

• Download the theme
• Extract
• Copy the extracted folder to ~/.local/share/adium/message-styles/
• Start/Restart Empathy
• Enable the ‘Postler’ theme via Edit > Preferences > Themes > Postler.

Update: Facebook has since restored access for the KDE applications and plugins, as well as re-adding the missing photos. Apparently the removal was a mistake caused by one of Facebook’s automated systems.

Facebook has banned KDE applications from uploading pictures to users profiles – with no clear reason as to why.

But if you think that’s a #fail in itself,  the social-networking site has reportedly removed all photos and albums that were uploaded using the now-banned applications and plugins.

Attempting to upload an image through an application that uses KIPI – the KDE Image Plugin Interface - results in the following error: -

“Facebook Call Failed: Invalid API key”

Applications currently affected include Gwenview and Digikam.

At the time of writing this does not affect GNOME applications such as Shotwell or F-Spot.

Appeals Process

But all is not, quite literally in this case, lost: An appeals procedure to reverse an application ban and restore deleted photos exists.

A bug report has been filed with Facebook with the hope of getting KIPI re-enabled. You can help speed things up by voting (but not commenting) on it @ bugs.developers.facebook.net/show_bug.cgi?id=18701

In the mean time this kerfuffle should be a clear reminder to all that you can never have too many back-ups both online and offline.

The CompuServe GIF format is my favorite image format. Sure you only get up to 256 colors and sure it's old, but it has a lot to like: a powerful compression algorithm, simplicity, and of course, animation.

This hint will show you how to view animated gifs saved to your camera roll from uiwebviews (pictures synced to your iPhone via iTunes are converted to jpeg, so it won't work for those).

Simply:

• Open the Photos app.
• Open the camera roll album.
• Tap the gif you would like to view.
• Tap the Action button in the lower left corner (it looks like an arrow jumping out of a box).
• Select 'Email Photo.'

Da haben sie gerade die Richtigen gefragt! Denn wenn einer bzw. zwei was vom Widersprechen verstehen, dann ja wohl die beiden hessischen Schwägerinnen Irmgard und Lieselotte Meier.

Development of Read Feeder has been going on at a relatively steady pace.  Michelle is really putting it through it’s paces with a whopping 153 feeds on her account!  I’m still looking for more testers during this private testing phase, so if you are a heavy consumer of syndicated content that you need to keep organized, send me an email.

Now on to the improvements!

Streamlined look

I’ve reduced the amount of clutter and wasted space on Read Feeder’s interface.  I looked at Facebook and GMail for ways to keep functions accessible, without drawing your eyes away from what you’re really interested in (your articles).  The goal is for Read Feeder to be there when you need it, but stay out of the way when you don’t.  There’s still more improvements that can be made here, but it’s moving in the right direction.

Page links

Read Feeder now gives you a numbered list of pages, making it easy to jump further back into your article list without having to press the “Older” link multiple times.  Your current page is highlighted in bold and underlined.

Subscribe URL

I recently added the Chrome RSS Extension to my browser, which lets you specify your own apps to use for subscribing to feeds.  To make that work with Read Feeder, I’ve added a handler that allows Chrome (and Firefox too) to send feeds from a page to your Read Feeder account.  From the extension’s options, add Read Feeder with this URL: http://apps.mhall119.com/feed/subscribe/?feed_url=%s

Poor little Amahi.

‘Amahi’ is open-source home server software which can turn an old PC into a streaming media centre, making your photos, videos and files available to other computers and applications in your house.

Very neat. So why are we feeling sorry for them?

The Big Bad Apple has told them off, issuing a cease and desist letter over their use of the term ‘App Store’ on their website.

We get it Apple, you own the ‘App Store’ trademark. Except, let’s be honest: you really don’t – the English languages does.

‘App Store’ is such a generic term that ‘owning’ it would be as ludicrous as ASDA/WallMart being the only ‘Grocery Store’ or Texaco being the sole user of the term ‘Gas Station’. Microsoft and Amazon are both challenging Apple in court over their ownership of the term on these very grounds.

Renaming contest

As for Amahi? Lacking the resources and clout which Microsoft and Amazon posses they have no choice but to choose a new name.

To help decide on the new name they are running a ‘Name the store’ contest @ amahi.org/name-the-store where users are free to submit their ideas on an alternative title for the App… er… ‘place where you can find applications and add-ons for Amahi’.

Amongst the more cheeky suggestions submitted so far are:-

• @ppStore
• Apistór
• Application Store
• iStore

However I’m sure the guys and gals at Amahi would appreciate something more constructive, so if you’re going to submit a suggestion use your head and not your wit.
