Ok, the media center journey continues. HD content looks great on a big setup right? I love it, good to show off to the friends & neighbours ;-) However, not all setup are right for playing back completely smooth HD content, regardless of how powerful the htpc is.
if you put a bog standard blu ray player, all will look well and life is good. However, once you get into archiving (that's another days work) & library playback of blu ray & other HD content, to the trained eye, all is not always well.
Most TV's now are 100hz + the higher the better, that's not the problem tho. Our trusty graphic cards only output at 50 or 60hz, still looks goods when played thru the HDTV... where the problem occurs is that all movies are between 23 to 24 fps, so this is the 50/24 bug you may of seen talked about on the forums, and I'm only getting my hear around it now. basically the movie playback rate of 23 to 24 fps conflicts with 50 or 60 hz on the graphic card, the result of this is ever now & again, you will see a slight stutter in the picture when watching a movie, ever so slight, but it bugs the hell out of me!
Once I started archiving the blurays this became a real issue for me because I wanted to achieve 100% perfect HD audio & video playback on the HTPC, and I was running into this bug, so my HTPC would not playback a blu ray as "good" as standard blu ray players.
To prove & get a better understanding of the issue, open your graphic card and set the refresh rate to 24hz, windows will now look & feel slow & ugly, then play back a film you know well. you will notice its "smoother"
Leaving the HTPC constantly at 24hz is a no-no because it looks shit, so I have to find a solution for this.
Fr media center, if you are planning archiving all you're movies & using mymovies.dk plugin, which most do, the ONLY solution to this issue is to use TMT5. If you use TMT5 then you Blu Rays have to be in .iso format, which brings up other issues, and there is NO FIX for any of the other .mkv content you have.
However, XBMC to the rescue.
XBMC has the option to sync the display to the refresh rate of the movie you are watching. And there is no beta releases of XBMC EDEN that can handle HD Audio codecs (some not all afaik) - so the long term is in the works...
I was a little bummed by this as I was hoping to use W7MC as my complete solution, but I was never going to scrap XBMC anyway.
So - in summary,
- if you want glitch free playback of your BluRay (.iso) use TMT5 in W7MC
- if you want glitch free playback of your BluRay & all other HD mkv's - use XBMC EDEN - Oct 29, 11
Hello All, long time no update! Ok, so have gone thru a fairly big update with the HTPC. I scrapped the USB DVBS2 tuner, all sorts of issues with it not coming out of sleep... so, I bought more internal tuners, heres what I have now:
2 * Hauppauge 229 WinTV NOVA-HD-S2
1 * Hauppauge 1342 WinTV-HVR-4400 TV Tuner PCIe
So, at the moment I have 5 tuners, 4 dedicated to $ky sub & FreeSat, 3 of which can handle the HD channels, the 4th tuner is from the dreambox, so a extra tuner for all freesat and SD $ly sub. Not really using the dreambox tuner, but have it connected to the dish 24/7 regardless.
I'm still running cccam CCcam_2.1.2 & newCS1.67, too lazy to update the dreambox as its working ok...however my entitlements are not auto-updating to I have to pop the sky card back into my sky box once every 2 months or so to update the entitlements. cccam 2.1.4 will fix thsi for me if i ever get around to installing it...
I also have a 5th DVBT tuner which is included in the 4400 tuner, so in the process of getting that cabled up so I can get RTE2 HD! better get my act in gear for the world cup...
I have finally sorted out the LCD screen on my Antec case, i was missing one of these:

From the dodgy pic above, you can now see the case is operating as expected. to be honest I done use any of the IR functions as I dont really need them, all control is handled via the microsoft IR kit.
Installed a Blu-Ray drive in there as well, about time I started ripping my Blu-Ray collection. I;m using a combination of AnyDVD HD (to handle the decryption) and DVDFab for ripping. Demuxing to .mkv with full retention of video & audio bit rate quality, just dropping the audio channels I dont need. I've double checked thsi with mediainfo, and the bit rate of the video on the bd disc .m2ts is identical to the .mkv I'm getting from DVDFab demux
DOwngraded gthr graphci card to NVIdia 9500GT which I had in another box, as I was havign fan issues with the 9800GT. This is a temporary fix, as i have ordered a new GPU card which wil allow me to bit-stream HD Audio over HDMI!

I've also put a good bit of work into figurig otu the codecs, properly, so everything will stream to the xbox extenders via mymovies add-in and DTS (soon HD) audio in main room. So far, so good. Successfully recording 2 HD channels and one other SD channel now from my 3 tuner sources.

Ok, long time no update.
My media center has been going thru soem major changes to date. DVBlink + HDPVR is a sweet setup for piping sky HD into W7MC, but only having 1 tuner as always a touchy subject.I originally convinced myself the the sacrifice was worth it, but no longer!So, I have now go ne down the route of DVBLink TV Source & 2* DVBS cards & Dreambox to decode encryption.This method will use my sky subscription, and give me my Dual tuners (up to 6 possible...) which enables tre multiroom functionality with ONE SKY SUBSCRIPTIONI have this fully up & running now using my SKy SD subscription card, waiting to purchase the 2nd DVBS HD card, and the setup will be upgraded to se my SKy HD sub card, once this is operational, I'll cancel my 2nd sky subscription as it will nto be needed.The full setup on how to do this was covered in last 2 posts, most difficult part was getting the boxkey right.So at the moment,I have the 1 sky card feeding 4 rooms (dual tuner for now) via HTPC & x360 media extenders. - Nov 15, 10

Ok, finally got around to tinkering with this recently! The box I got off eBay had the root password changed, so took a while to figure out who to change this.
You can access via telnet & http, but only if you have the root password, so only way to control the box is via the OSD connected to TV.
This is where my slingbox came in VERY handy, i never use the composite connections on the slingbox, so just hooked up the dreambox to the LAN & slingbox (ir blasters...), now I have remote access to configure it over web, or anywhere really. I'm tight on time for playing with this, so the more remote access, the better ;-)
to reset the password, I just reset the dreambox to factory default which was within one of the standard menus... nothing special there.
next, flashing the dreambox with the right firmware for the job??? - Jun 29, 10
Ok, so the DVBlink setup is solid enough now, after extensive testing. Even my girlfriend no longer complains about it, so it must be working well ;-)
Currently there is 2* 1080p screens hooked up to htpc, a 52" (living room) and a 26" in office (testing). There is 2 * xbox 360 as extenders, in master bedroom and sunroom connected via HD powerlines.
My next plan was to get a 2nd hd pvr and move the sky box from sunroom to office, then having both sky boxes & hdpvr connected to htpc & served out via media center.
I've decided to more adventurous, I purchased a dreambox s500!!
Very cheap off eBay in fairness, but there is a steep learning curve to say the least.
Once tweaked, the dreambox is capable of card sharing, so with one sky card, I can feed signal to multiple clients.
There has been some limitations that kept me away from getting into this, which have been resolved recently afiak, updating the sky card encryption.
Anyhoo, I havnt even got root access yet to the dreambox , so this will take a while.

The scheduling of the recordings from the EPG in media center is great and does work very well, however we all know that there is always adds on before and after the movie within the recording window.It took a while to figure this one out. I wanted to be able to convert the .wtv recordings into a editable format. there are many tools out there, but all were failing for me with the .wtv format.This is because the video recorded is encoded with H264 codec. For now these will have to be converted to another format like .ts for example. the tool i am using is VideoReDouse the batch tool - select all your .wtv's and add them to a batch job, I saved my coverts to .tsthese .ts files then can be open in VideoReDo and you can very easily trim out the adds, and add to another batch job. repeat process for all movies and run the batch. - Jan 21, 10
There is plenty of tools out here to pull metadata & sort your movies,but this one seesm to be the best for me.The native movie browser in W7MC sucks completely, so mymovies has its own databsse and integrates very well into w7mc & extendedrs.It will also generate tags for EVA8000 / Eva9000 (which I have & use yaay! the netgear tagging tool is very labor intensive) and also for XMBC - win win!and if your movie collection is in a complete mess:run this first then run mymovies and you'll be sorted! - Feb 16, 10
DVBlink & Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-HD-S2 229 = Sky HD + Freesat in Media Center. (UTV / BBC HD ect....)Ok, so I finally got around to adding this freesat tuner to my media center. In fairness the media center setup was painless,I didn't loose any of my existing settings / scheduled recordings. Walked thru the tuner setup as normal and for theWinTV-NOVA-HD-S2 229 tuner, i used the Astra 28.2° east (Astra 2A/2B/2C/2D) satellite for my EPG & channels.All of this worked well. in my media center EG, I had some duplicate channels, that are available on both tuners, soGuide Tool 1.2 (merge tuners) sorted this out for me in a flash.As you can imagine there is a enormous amount of crap channels on freesat that I will manually deactivate, no big rush on this.all channel listing were auto populated by native media center listings, i am looking into using my digiguide subscription to populates this as well if I am missing anything, see previous posts on how to do this.BBC HD looks excellent! - Dec 31, 09
I actually dont use the mytray.exe at all sicne all of my channel changin is goign thru the DVBlink.If you are passign a analogue signal from sky to your TV card and wat to use the dusky controler for channel chagign, then you will need to use mytray.exeA little fiddly to setup, but heres how I eventualyl got it going with the help from Joseph @ duskycontrol:Is seems I have made soem progress with mytraysee screenshotbrains here didnt think of having wmc open at the same time, DOH!so its getting closer.so when wmc is open, and i try and flick thru channels, the channel display is changing in mytray.exe - so it seems the comms are ok between mytray & wmc - Nov 09, 09Here is my HTPC spec - more than enough power for playing 1080p & full blu-ray rips.
- Motherboard = Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H. This has onboard HDMI, which was originally the reason why i purchased the board. Sadly, the onboard graphics just were not up to the job for full 1080p, 90% of the time all is ok, but i did experience some stuttering, so decided to get another graphics card This mob also comes with optical out for audio, a must.
- Chassis = Antec Fusion Remote Max. nice looking case, absolute pain in the arse to setup. the documentation is anything but correct, hooking up the LCD screen was a complete nightmare, which I down even use now... I regret buying this case, but its installed now!
- CPU = Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz. That's enough horsepower for me thanks.

That was fast… only two weeks after DVBLink for HDPVR Beta 2, here is DVBLink for HDPVR Beta 3 with the following changes:
- Higher process priority (above normal)
- Embedded DVBLink Server installer
- Removal of faulty screen saver
- Product version validation
The tests that were made using a higher process priority for the DVBLink service has resulted in a much improved reliability for many users. Also the “Fault Screen Saver” feature in 2.0 Beta 2 was not quite ready as it caused slow and failed channel changes. We recommend to everyone using a prior 2.0 Beta version to update to this version.
Since we have this new all-integrated installer, you will not have to worry anymore about deciding whether you need to re-install the DVBLink server or not. The installer will let you know what’s best depending on your situation. Also, there is no need to delete your HDPVRBridge sources or do backup of your current config.xml because the installer is made to handle upgrade scenarios very well (we use this functionality very often to deploy on our own HTPCs).
This beta version will most likely be the last beta release for DVBLink for HDPVR 2.0. At this point, we believe users still using DVBLink for HDPVR 1.0 should start using DVBLink for HDPVR 2.0.
- Nov 03, 09Getting the EPG right does take a lot of work, When you go the the setup for Media Center, there is the option to specify your country / region and TV provider. However, these listings were not 100% accurate for my Sky+ package, and load of channels were missing.XMLTV is the format that W7MC manages its EPG database, so i needed a way to update & add to this dynamically.
First step, is to use Digiguide - http://www.digiguide.com/This is not free software, but well worth the subscription fee. Thsi will pull the correct TV listing for my area as well ad artwork for TV shows & detailed metadata / show desctiption. This is a standalone application which shows full listings.Next, we need a tool that will grab all the listings from digiguide & convert it into a format that can be merges into W7MC.DG2XML is the tool you need.DGXMLTV was written to translate the UK TV Guide data supplied by DigiGuide.com into an XMLTV format file, suitable for use with SageTV and the excellent XMLTV Import Tool by StéphaneM, which can be found here:http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17566DGXMLTV comes with a skin for digiguide, you need to enable this skin & set password.open XMLTV GUI - Tools - SettingsC:\Program Files\XMLTV GUI\data.xmlGo to the Grabbers tab - tick & select UK_digi - then below you should have a settings button, this cought me out for ages & drove me mental because I could not find it!! lolIn the settings tab, specify the password you set on the DGXMLTV skin for Digigiude & leave http://localhost:2402/ as is.back to DG2XML, copy DG2XML.exe to the root of C:open a cmd, cd to the root of C: and run DG2XML.exe (do a scheduled task to automate this)when this is finished, you will have a epgdata.xml file in c:Ok, so now you have your TV listings in xml format running on a schedlued task weekly. Install Big Screen EPG for Windows - then during the configuration you wil lbe asked for your XMLTV source - point it at the location of epgdata.xmlYou will now also have a option to schedule this task, again do it weekly after the xml is generated.Within W7MC, you will probably notice that some of the channels have "no program data" - this can now be resolved by editing the channel & choose channel listings (which is what is generated by Big Screen EPG)I had to manually map a lot of my channel numbers as well in the DVBlink configuration, this is now easier to do in the latest beta 2.03 - Oct 22, 09The additional improvements are:Added a “Stream Saver” feature to get rid of the infamous “No TV Signal” message. That is, if the HD PVR Streaming is lost, we feed a dummy stream that Media Center continues recording “unknowingly”. This way, if you have an “on-device-error-power-cycle” hook present, Media Center won’t abort your recording.Added support for sub-channel numbers (ex: 700.1 or 700-1)Much improved MCE Compatible IR support (fixed the frequency bug AND the port selection)Improvements and bug fixes to line-up editor.Added the ability to change the “set-top-box” number for your channels in your line-up.Hardware fingerprint changed to use Ethernet MAC address.Fixed the registration dialog for all platforms.This version is for DVBLink for HDPVR experienced users that want to give a shot at the new features and for users experiencing issues with version 1.0.2.Since this version now uses the Ethernet MAC address as the hardware fingerprint, you will need to request a new activation key. All future releases as well will move to this new hardware fingerprint method.That means:If you have a registration key for DVBLink for HDPVR, your registration key won’t be compatible with 2.0 Beta and 1.0, however you license will still be valid and you will be able to request a new registration key.If you don’t have a registration key for DVBLink for HDPVR and you have installed the 30-days version, the trial counter will get reset with the 2.0 Beta 2 installation, for an additional 15 days.If you buy a license using the 2.0 Beta 2, the registration key won’t be compatible with the 1.0.2 version, but it will be with the future 2.0 version. Ok, so the Sky HD boxes are a fairly good setup, and will suit most peoples needs.But since I am paying a arm and a leg for my sky service, I would like to be able to keep the movies I record for starters and anything else I can claw back from sky.Sky HD boxes use 2 tuners, but only one f these will ever be in use at ay time while used in conjunction with the HDPVR, so I tend to use the other tuner for recording HD movies to the internal sky had drive and then rip them to a format of my choice when I have time The other tuner is dedicated to the media center.So what else can i do with the media center / sky hd?Well, first of all you can add media extenders to your setup. For example, you can have your dedicated HTPC doing all the work & hooked up to your main screen. then in another room you can have a xbox 360 streaming the TV signal from the sky box as well as share all recorded tv. potentially you could have a media extender in each room of your house all streaming live or recorded content in HD, without the extra cost of "sky multi room" ect....I find it especially useful to record loads of tv shows for the kids and to have the ability for them to watch whatever they want in each room - anything for a moments peace!

This record is the best (IMO) hardcore record of 1992 - very hard to dispute!
No real anthems here, just savage beats wicked samples and everything I love about 92 hardcore rolled into a 4 tracker!
This is also the first release by Foul Play - DNB Legends.
Production on this release is also top class, Vol. 2 is well worth collecting, Ragatere being my favourite on Vol.1

The producers of this record are still unknown, rumored to be Swedish or Micky Finn. The baseline in this is soooo catchy, I love it!Been after this one for years, I am now the proud owner or 3 copies, 2 originals and 1 re-press.This was also a big Slipmatt tune back in 1991, cained in Fantasia, this bumping up its value nowadays. This is the stuff that was played out a lot on the Pirates in London in 92, more so on the radio than at big raves. A VengeanceB Love Overdose (Remix) - Oct 01, 07This is a big tune for my from 1993. First time I heard it was in Sir Henrys when Laurent Garnier was playing in 1993. This tune absolutely lifted the room of the club, it was unreal, I will never forget it. Once I started to play the old stuff again in 2003 or so, I had this in my box for some time, dropping it at every gig I played, always got a good reaction, maybe a little overplayed - oops!

- Oct 01, 07Top Ruffige.I was never a big fan of this record, but since Easygroove used to cain it at numerous Fantazia gigs, this 12 was highly sought after for many. "Welcome to my nightmare" is the main track on the 12" tight little oldskool amen roller, with a cheezy 50's sample in there, production is complete crap, but thats what a of of the music was about back then. If is was thrown together on a amiga a500 and no post production at all, the raw sound is what it was all about, this record is a prime example of that. A lot of tunes were made the same way, raw production ect, most of then still sound crap today, but there is a few real gems out there that really represent the sound of the time for me - this is one of them.Value of record: €150+Tracklisting:

I had absolutely no idea what the name of the track was, I just knew what the label looked like. Luckily browsing thru some oldskool sites, I came across a label scan from Vicious Pumpin Plastic, and I knew I was close, now all I needed to knwo was which release it was, lolThere was a lot of tuff hardcore crap out back in 1992, but this record is quality, savage breaks and great samples, this type of stuff didn't get plated out much BITD IMO , except for those like Easygroove and others - Hardcore!Value of record: €35 to €40Tracklisting:

The network version / release of this track is the more known, but this is defiantly a far superior mix of the track. The bassline and breaks are top, saying that, there is not much you can do with it when mixing it in, a quick 8 bar mix and drop! The vocals are the same as in the Network version: "Come with me to the dance floor....", but they sound better in this track. My original copy of this record is worn out, must get another copy!

Around 1991 Q got released on 3 separate 12's, this release has both the Santa Monica & Original mix - I am a fan of the Santa Monica mix myself, its produced by FSOL
I remember hearing this on the 1st "Rave" taoe I ever got in 1991, a tape my Eddy B & AMC. Lol, once I got that tape, everything changed for me, it was the music I was after! Anyway, this is a beautiful piece of music that will remain in my box for ever.

Rumored to only be approx 200 copies worldwide, which is a lot for such a sought after record. This would be the gem of any serious Drexciya obsessed fan. This has cropped up on ebay 3 times on the last 3 to 4 years, it caused quite a stir when a copy was apparently sold for £5400 - this was later stated to be a bogus bid / sale.
All the sale, this is as rare as fish eyelids, you wont see this come up that ofter at all - some have said this is the rarest "electronic music" record on the planet - and I believe them.
Drexciya need to introduction really, their Anonymity only fueled the passion of their fans / collectors. To date I have had 3 separate offers for £1000 for this - no sale!

Another Italian Classic from 1991, I think Justin Robertson used to play this back in 1992, cant really remember where I heard it first or how I got into it, class record all the same. I think Top Buzz used to play this a lot as well. Top Drawer BLEEP!

While this is not one of 4 Hero's strongest releases, this is a rare one. Anyone who has a remote int rest in Oldskool or modern day DNB will be very familiar with the Reinforced Label - and this is the first release on it - nothing more really.
I do recall chatting so some dude who worked in the vinyl exchange in Manchester about rare records and he placed this at the top of the hardest records to get, not sure if I agree on that, but still good one for the collection all the same.

Wow, took me years even to get the name for this record. I remember vaguely hearing it in Henrys - this was also a big Sasha classic BITD. I was discussing this record on tune-id.com for some time,even the mod's were having trouble getting the name of this record. Luckily a mate of mine, Ronan C, has a copy and was kind enough to ID it and dig it out of his archive. We initially thought it was a release on Pipierre so the hunt began for Pipierre 028. This went on for some time and turned up no results. a discussion thread started (in here somewhere = http://www.peoplesrepublicofcork.com/~peoplesr/forums/showthread.php?t=83089&highlight=Klaus) on the PROC and finally I got the real details of the release. Still had a bit of hassle getting it up on Discogs because the mods were unsure of the label, I remember one of the mods telling me that the has contacted FPI Project to get confirmation on the info.
