[rant] The entertainment industry thought they were slick. The SOPA legistlation was meant to pass quietly, setting the stage for a future where people pay for content...because they have no other choice. The RIAA, MPAA, etc. want to take the first step towards regaining their powers of old. Yet their arch nemesis, the Internet, caught on early, and replied with a resounding, Gandlafian, "NO (THOU SHALL NOT PASS)."
The internet, i.e. the sharing of information freely between humans from all rungs of society, has changed the way we operate. Everyone openly relies on Google and Wikipedia and twitter and Facebook and YouTube. Some privately rely on torrenting. You know those RIAA anti-piracy ads (you wouldn't steal A CAR would you? WOULD YOU?? PUNK?!)? Well, they used pirated music to make those. Sharing is here to stay. All artists borrow from each other. Now it's just out in the open... call me a marxist, but I think it's a good thing.
Honestly, I would have never even thought to make ALL my session files available to the public... some would say a hip hop producer is only as good as his samples and synths... It's kind of crazy to just give them all away. But that whole 'Internet black out' thing really got to me - it inspired me. It made me realize that we’re only as powerful as our connection to each other. So everyone should feel free (heh) to do with this project whatever they want. Additionally, there are a ton of AMAZING producers, dj's and blogs out there that give away resources for free (abletonop.com, AfroMackDJ, IllGates, DJ Lucky Date, Eskmo, to name a few), that I constantly make use of. It's only right to pay it forward.
Let me tell you a bit about how this project came to be. 2011 was a tough year for me. I was homeless, jobless, and (worst of all?), computerless (*gasp*). This project chronicles my journey from that dark, weird place, to a realization. A realization that the things I lost were not truly necessary. A realization of the abundance surrounding me (especially compared to most of the rest of the world). And the realization of what is most important to me as an artist and as a human: Freedom. I believe we wake up everyday and reinvent ourselves to become whoever we choose. This fact can be hard to see sometimes; a lot of us aren't truly aware of this choice so we end up accepting things as they are, or making excuses as to why we can't change things. But we are all born with an inherent freedom to do whatever the hell we want. Anyway, I guess this realization may be obvious of some of you, but I had it last year and Feel Free is my attempt to instrumentally embody this idea, as well as my journey to realize it. [/rant]
