Glatze/Mr. Underwood - Café Vixen
In Sam Underwood’s own words, Glatze is the “live music nutter” alter ego to his more experimental self, Mr Underwood. With a vast assortment of instruments at his disposal, some of which are often homemade, Glatze’s music is created to make the listener smile and dance and needs to be seen live in order to be fully appreciated.

Vinny And The Curse
Vinny And The Curse - High
Founded in 2009 by Scott Vincent Abbott and Richard Franklin with a deliberately basic sound, the band was able to expand their musical output with the addition of their newest member John Presley in Spring 2010. The recent release of their six track EP ‘The Psychic Foot,’ has seen them create yet more relentless guitar-based brilliance with several forthcoming gigs in support of the release.

Mothertrucker
Mothertrucker - Festival Strength
With riffs to rival the likes of Black Sabbath, Kyuss and Neurosis, Mothertrucker make one hell of a noise, and what a fantastic noise it is. With a blend of psychedelic rock and stoner metal as well as the occasional quiet sections Mothertrucker are more than capable of channelling all of their talent into a relentless wall of sound which is not for the faint hearted.

Romans
Romans - Something Biblical
The past six months have seen Romans explode onto the live scene in the Midlands, where their heady mix of inescapable melodies, cacophonous gang vocal and raw streaks of aggression have captured the attention of even the most uninterested spectator. Advice? Join the Roman Army now or be crushed in its wake.

We All Need Heroes
We All Need Heroes - Forgotten Heartbeat
Notably taking influence from bands such as Soundgarden, Kings of Leon and Black Stone Cherry, We All Need Heroes formed in 2008 and went through several line-up changes before settling on a permanent line-up. Playing a blend of classic and southern rock, We All Need Heroes are capable of both melodic slow burners as well as fast-paced anthems.

The Gruber

The Gruber - The Interview
The Gruber formed in 2009 under the original moniker of Hans Gruber, the infamous villain played by Alan Rickman in the first Die Hard film. Having had to deal with member departures, a forced hiatus, and uncertainty regarding the existence of the band, The Gruber finally settled down in early 2010 and have gone from strength to strength since. The band played their first gig with their current line-up in April 2010 and have been exciting listeners ever since.

Artists on 'Sounds of the City Sheffield':
wooderson
Wooderson - Mendonca
Wooderson is, in the simplest terms, four good friends who have a stupidly good time making a racket with each other and subsequently inflicting said racket on members of the general public.
They play dischordant post-punk/indie rock to nod your head to. Sometimes it's loud, sometimes it's quiet, sometimes its tight, sometimes its loose, sometimes its controlled, sometimes its chaotic. It's always played with passion.

screamingmaldini
Screaming Maldini - The First Raindrop
Happy go-lucky indie pop. Perfect for the coming summer months. Screaming Maldini are like a sugar-coated Mystery Jets, crossed with the Polyphonic Spree. Recent affiliations with respected indie labels Alcopop! and Big Scary Monsters will mean this band go far. You heard them here first!

heebiejeebies
The Heebie Jeebies - Romeo
Owen, Del and Thom collectively indulge in “Fruity Beefheart beats, calypso rhythms and west coast noise flex, caressed with a poetic social panorama”. Formed at Sheffield Institute Of Arts, The Heebie Jeebies imbue a colourful charm and style that embraces modern insecurities with an ‘end of the rainbow’ mentality.
Their influences vary from Trad African & tribal Kalimba songs to post punk ‘Industrial’, with melodic nods to boozy Britpop soirees and Welsh Psych; a light hearted approach to narratives of cultural indecency.

skeletons
Skeletons & the Empty Pockets - In The Woods
Having been around since 1999 (formally Fierce Panda-signed ThisGIRL) the band are well renowned for their energetic and powerful live performances, by their own admission they are “a couple o’reyt nice kids with nowt better to do.”

In 2008 "Skeleton's" headlined the BBC Introducing stage at the prestigious Reading and Leeds Festivals. In 2009 'Oh Brother!' and 'In the Woods' (as appears on the Sounds of the City compilation) was Skeletons and the Empty Pockets' debut double A side release - which sold all 500 copies before the release date through Too Pure Records.

renegadebrassband
Renegade Brass Band - Take No Chances, Make No Changes
Combining 8 horns with 2 percussionists, scratch DJ and live MC, the Renegade Brass Band are a tight ensemble playing with a raw brass sound, mixing the best of funk, hip-hop and jazz into the ultimate party band. The Renegade Brass Band have already established a big live reputation as a headline act. Their new EP, 'Radio Rebelde', released at the end of February and including a remix of their track 'Junktion' by London-based producer Phrij (lifestyle Records), has had regular airplay on BBC Raw Talent.

pirouettes
Pirouettes - A Crass Menagerie
After numerous line-up changes and experiments with sound, Pirouettes are forming into a beast of the Sheffield music scene. Epic indie-rock taking influence from the likes of Minus the Bear, This Town Needs Guns, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse and Explosions in the Sky. Their debut EP, ‘The Water & The Wave’ came out in early 2011 on Hairy Wolf Records – 4 songs of emotive, indie rock designed to make you think and feel.

theseblackandwhiteflames
These Black & White Flames - 96
Americana from Sheffield shouldn’t work… but it does, with the band taking influence from American artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Ryan Adams. Night’s spent drinking bourbon and listening to records means These Black and White Flames come across like Sheffield’s answer to REM – except you won’t have to pay upwards of £30 to see them play live.
These Black & White Flames on Facebook

pudge
Pudge - Fuckin Yes Mate
Pudge play fast, cider-drinking, Northern Pop-punk for fans of Superchunk, NOFX and Dear Landlord. Songs about Strongbow, drinking in Sheffield pubs and fish and chip shops influenced their debut album, fittingly entitled ‘Chippy Tea!”. The debut album came out at in 2010 on Sheffield’s very own Not Shy of the DIY.

trophywives
Trophy Wives - Weez Breakin' Yo' Legs
Where furious and wonderfully catch pop-punk meets the intelligent indie-rock of Foals and Minus The Bear you get Trophy Wives. The thrashed chords, heavy drums and chanted lyrics combine perfectly with the more subtle vocals and carefully picked guitar lines to make this Sheffield 3 piece all together far more interesting and yet just as easy to rock out to than a lot of the guitar music around right now. With lyrics about friends and family, it’s exactly how pop-punk should be. Loud, to the point and in your face.
Trophy Wives on Facebook

alvarezkings
Alvarez Kings - Fractured Bones & Reputations
So many guitars and post Libertines impersonators, all looking for their five minutes of fame while poufing their hair into sky high configurations of hairspray. Yet sometimes ears are pricked towards something decisive and skilled. A quirky set of songs with tub-thumping base lines, skuzzy guitars and punchy harmonies, all brought to you by four delicious men who are unafraid to enjoy their musical task.

The band’s explosive live show is selling the band far and wide. Fresh from supporting bands such as The Enemy, Bloc Party and One Night Only, as well as headlining some of the best venues around including 2 slots at the infamous Koko in London, the sheer animal fun that exudes from the close knit gang ensures a dancing crowd everywhere they go. Volatile, tapped and ready to freak, Alvarez Kings are on a precipice that cannot fail to see them pummel the airwaves with passion and precision.
