SOUL CENTRE DROP-IN CLASS DESCRIPTIONS 2012
HATHA FLOW YOGA
Hatha Yoga is an ancient holistic system of health and self-development that begins with the body as a practical way to affect all aspects of ones being on both the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. Hatha Flow is a combination of dynamic, energizing sequences of postures for strength and flexibility, rejuvenating flows for deep release and relaxation, moving into still postures for longer periods. Breath and movement are linked together to create flowing sequences of related asanas, which helps to rejuvenate the body and release mental and emotional tension, inducing deep relaxation as awareness of breath, body and mind becomes integrated.
HATHA - FIRE
SHIN YOGA
Drawing on the developmental postures of Shin Somatics, Skinner Releasing principles and somatic practice these classes focus on opening and lengthening the body and quietening the mind. Based on the founding principle of Yoga – to create balance - we begin with balancing the nervous system and endocrine system, using asanas and pranayama inspired for healing and inner reflection. Help manage stress, learn to wind down and create a space to just be in your body. This is a transformative practice. Also suitable for those new to yoga, recovering from illness or injury, those in the later stages of the life cycle, or those in HOLIDAY MODE, also helpful for post-natal mums. Shin Yoga will move gently through the postures with a focus on healing, restoration and revitalization.
Bookings essential for the Leys Institute classes, SOUL CENTRE classes feel free to drop in anytime. To book email info@soulcentre.co.nz (Release Me class is right after at 7.30pm, so feel free to stay for the evening) For more info see www.shinyoga.com
ASHTANGA YOGA
Ashtanga yoga links the breath, physical poses and concentration in a flowing meditation. The practice generates heat which cleanses the body of toxins allowing it to become light and strong. Suitable for beginners wanting a more dynamic yoga practice, or for intermediate level students. The practice focuses on the primary series of Ashtanga yoga.
MYSORE MORNING PRACTICE
Start your day feeling alive and wonderful! In Mysore-style classes you learn the Ashtanga yoga routine at your own pace, advancing to the next pose only when you are ready. Taught one-on-one in a class environment, this class is perfect for beginners as well as experienced students. Best practiced regularly, you can practice from 30 minutes up to 1.5 hours. There are no Mysore classes on the new moon and full to allow us to rest when our energy is vulnerable. Ask at reception for a moon-day calendar or check the website. Mysore classes are a different payment system than other SOUL drop-in classes. (Mysore prices: $15 casual or $100 per calendar month)
M-BODY
This is a fun class set to music, that will help you to tune your body safely, increasing tone and generating heat.
Activating the muscles and the nervous system through movement is a positive way to bring warmth and tone to the body and exercise the cardio-vascular system in a safe and fun way. This is an energetic class that integrates principles of Yoga, pilates, dance and simple Muscle and Bone techniques to stimulate and condition the mind and body. A challenging work out combines simple dance based movement to music, blending cardio, strength building and stretching in a well-balanced session that will improve rhythm, spatial awareness and co-ordination.

WORKSHOPS AND INTENSIVES - DETAILS
2013
Opening to Presence -
Foundations of MindfulnessThe practices of meditation and chi gong offer us a way to ground ourselves through sensing and feeling, opening to an awareness that is vital, profound and intrinsically free.
Chi gong is a powerful support for mindfulness meditation: relaxing the body, quietening the mind and helping to maintain awareness in the here and now.
This day-long workshop will include meditation, dharma talks and simple chi gong and yoga practices to balance and harmonise body and mind. It is suitable for all levels of health and fitness.
Erin Taylor teaches Insight Meditation in Wellington with the Original Nature Insight Meditation group, including Peter Fernando, Stephen Archer and Hugh Tennent. She explored different meditation traditions from her late teens in the 1970s and has practised in the Insight Meditation tradition for more than 25 years. She studied Zhineng Chi Gong in NZ and in China and taught it for ten years before deciding to focus on teaching meditation. Chi Gong had a powerful effect on her own meditation practice and she has recently been teaching the two practices together.
There are three major elements to performances. Visual (what we look like), Vocal (what we sound like) and Verbal (what we say). I will present in this workshop various scores (exercises) that will allow students to playfully explore these elements. The major focus will be on the Visual where I will introduce ways of being more physically articulate and impulsively creative with the movement of our bodies in the performing space. I will also have you look at ways of increasing your vocal palette and developing an improvised theatrical language that suits you aesthetically.
Positive feedback is a device I use to get people to talk about what they enjoyed doing, seeing, hearing. It is a means of developing your self-teacher (creating scores to enhance skills in things you like doing) and have confidence in their inner-director (as an improviser you are your own director) evolving the language necessary to talk about and fully understand one's aesthetic values.
“Al’s clarity of the improvisational process has enabled me to learn an exciting art, the expansion of presence, creating and sculpting moments has opened up so much life energy for me” - Wah
“This was a nice balm which was very uplifting....Delicious to be here” – Ananda
“ Really good for my analytical skills, my observational and listening skills. I felt like I learnt a lot from watching and listening to others working and talking” - Rachel
“Inspiring and supportive.... It has allowed me to regain and explore my creative side. I like what is becoming of me!’ – Poorva
“I’ve finally found a way of working that resonates with me. Opening a door into my creativity, playfulness and the art of allowing!” - Siri

THE NEW STORY: Reimagining our Lives
with Louisa Walker
6 July 9-3pm
Thomas
Berry, theologian, depth ecologist and self-described “earth scholar” put it
this way:
"We
are in trouble now because we are in between stories. The Old Story - the
account of how the world came to be and how we fit into it - sustained us for a
long time. It shaped our emotional attitudes, provided us with life purpose, and
energized action…. We awoke in the morning and knew where we were…everything was
taken care of because the story was there. But now it is no longer functioning
properly, and we have not yet learned the New Story”.
In this workshop we will explore elements of the “new story”, what they mean and how they affect us. We will ask how we can develop our own ‘new story’, imagining what it would look like and feel like. We will explore:
· Consciousness as a fundamental quality of the universe, not simply a function — or a by-product—of the brain
· How do we understand and experience ‘non-local consciousness’
· Reports of Near Death Experiences (NDEs) that challenge our beliefs about life, death, our purpose, and the meaning of existence
· The role of the heart: biologically, energetically, symbolically and practically
We will consider startling new ways of understanding ourselves in the world in practical terms. We will consider how you can reimagine your own life in terms of a new story that offers healing, inspiration and transformation.
FREEING THE HEART-MIND

A non-residential weekend retreat exploring Buddhist meditation practices for developing wisdom and compassion

Jill Shepherd
Jill began practicing insight meditation in Thailand in 1999, and since that time has lived and worked at several meditation centres and monasteries in the US, Australia, England, and Thailand. She recently spent seven years on staff at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts. While there, she participated in several long retreats and Buddhist study programmes, and also offered weekly meditation classes at a nearby prison. She has been invited into the current teacher training programme jointly offered by Spirit Rock and IMS in the US, and is currently teaching insight meditation in the Blue Mountains, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand.
*Dana
In most Buddhist traditions the teachers are not paid to teach. Instead, the teachings are given on a 'dana' basis – dana being the Pali word for generosity or giving freely. At the end of the course, participants are invited to reciprocate this generosity by offering dana to support the teacher, but there is no obligation to do so.
Jill is an independent meditation teacher and is not financially supported by any meditation centre or Buddhist organisation. She relies on dana for her livelihood, and pays for all the expenses incurred in offering a retreat herself, including international airfares.

INSIGHT MEDITATION AND RESTORATIVE SHIN YOGA WITH PETER FERNANDO AND WILHEMEENA MONROE
13th October 2013
10am-5.30pm
$120
Mindfulness is away of coming into presence. Being present in the here and now naturally feels good. When we feel good in presence we can make wise choices, and relate to others with clarity, openness and self awareness.
Relaxation is a key component of mindful presence. When the body is relaxed, we can sense the quality of our minds with greater clarity.
Restorative Yoga is a powerful method of shedding the residual tension and stress held in our bodies, and is a perfect antidote to our busy lives.
This workshop will teach practical skills to access these complementary qualities of being and is suitable for both beginners and those with prior meditation and yoga experience.
LIVING FULLY with Louisa Walker
2 November 9-3pm
In this workshop you will learn how to participate in a process of accelerated transformation that will result in the genuine expression of your genius in this lifetime. It’s not about manipulating the universe to get what you want, when you want it. It is about getting out of your own way to let your own, specific, individual light shine and your true voice emerge to tell your story. It’s about dancing to your own tune and allowing us all to share and revel in that. What you adore doing the most is actually your gift to the world. Uncover your delight and discover that life is about sharing the joy.
In this workshop we will:
· Question your assumptions regarding what is, and what is not, possible in your life
· Identify the barriers—the limiting factors—that result in a short-sighted view of what is possible
· Identify your genius and learn to bring it forth in every area of your life

MTY
Moving Towards Yourself with Claire O-Neill
A dance workshop for any body…
TBA
The ‘MTY’ method is a series of exercises to help release and ‘empty out’ blockages and habitual patterns in the body and search for a new approach to your moving body and embrace the dance that is within you.
Through the workshop tasks, including a structured physical warm up, the body and mind are opened up to rediscover the space around us, our relationships to other bodies, and our own possibilities and desires in dance.
Using bodywork and dance techniques (yoga, manipulations, massage, contact improvisation, physical theatre tasks, european contemporary dance methods, composition tools) the workshop will give the individuals special attention to create a small solo or duo. The solos or duos, with directive help from the leader, are for the purpose of unfolding inhibitions, being creative and structured, and/or abandoning yourself to the simplicity of movement. There is no pressure to perfrom it, but each particpant goes away with a film of the solos or duos for their own personal reference.
MTY is a fun and sharing moment to come closer to yourself and understand and celebrate the dancer we all have within.
5 day workshop of 4 hrs per day

BODY-INTELLIGENCE TRAINING
CRANIO-SACRAL THERAPY – 2 year Practitioner training
With Ged Sumner (UK) and Simon Gosling
BECOME A LISENCED CRANIO-SACRAL THERAPIST
This training offers a 45-day practitioner course for individuals wanting to become qualified cranio-sacral therapists. The training is biodynamic in it’s approach orientating to the body’s natural wisdom allowing innate intelligent processes to emerge and bring about authentic change. These changes will be physiological and psycho-emotional. The body’s own priorities for change are listened for and encouraged to arise. The art of the therapist is to connect with the underlying forces and health and facilitate a process of natural reorganization. These forces express as subtle motion of tissues and fluids that can be felt by sensitive hands. Biodynamic craniosacral therapy takes a whole-person approach to healing and the inter-connectedness of mind, body and spirit are deeply acknowledged.
Thank you so much for a fantastic seminar full of exploration, discovery and inspiring, open minded people, loved it !!! Nadine Vollmerg - First year student 2012

LAND TO WATER YOGA
BECOME A REGISTERED SOMATIC MOVEMENT THERAPIST and/or a YOGA ALLIANCE 200hrs Yoga Teacher through EastWest, ISMETA and the SOUL CENTRE.
A unique opportunity to experience the work of one of the worlds leading somatic educators, these workshops are two modules of the EASTWEST Somatics training, an International somatics training association.
Module 1: January 2014 (TBA)
Module 2: January 2014 (TBA)
Modules can be taken individually or together, 7 modules are required for full certification. Take both modules at a reduced cost and earn two levels of credit towards becoming a Registered Somatic Movement Therapist through EastWest and ISMETA
Land to Water Yoga is a unique contemporary style of yoga, grounded in processes of Shin Somaticsâ as developed through our work at the Eastwest Somatics Institute. Much yoga today emphasizes physical competition, having lost the original intent of spiritual healing and self-awareness. Yoga means "to yoke": it signals our kinship with the environment and all forms of life. In practice, yoga can be a psychophysical means for transforming personality—progressing through enjoyable shapes and movements that anyone can do.
This unique new form of yoga—maintains yoga’s original intent of spiritual healing and awareness and offers a way to deepen clear seeing and a calm mind, urging one past his or her limited ego. It is based on five stages of infant development and the methods of Shin Somatics® Moving Way. Its progression moves backward from the most complex movement in terms of balance to the least: from walking to floating (from land to water), providing the opportunity to retrace our personal human development back to its watery soma source.
All Eastwest Workshops include Fraleigh's unique Land to Water Yoga & Chakra Unwinding. Become acquainted with the seven energy vortexes of human life and infant development in processes that have grown over a period of twenty years at Eastwest. In Eastwest workshops, Sondra, Karen, and other associates teach the characteristics of the chakras through somatic processes. Learn how to open to the energetic qualities of each chakra in your own body and development.
At Eastwest, we use the models of dance technique, improvisation, and choreography throughout our work. Our approach is basic, so no previous dance study is required.
Sondra Fraleigh: Sondra Fraleigh is an international leader in dance, yoga, and healing arts. She is a Registered Feldenkrais® teacher, and certifies Registered Somatic Movement Educators and Therapists through ISMETA, International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association. She has been a professor of dance and somatics for over thirty years in the Department of Dance at the State University of New York at Brockport and is a valued mentor to dancers and somatic practitioners in the USA, Europe, Japan and India.

Open Source Forms (OSF) Teacher Training
Open Source Forms is a Teacher Training & Certification program begun in 2009 by Stephanie Skura. It's an 'open source' system culled from decades of continuing research & practice in improvisation, performance, choreography, writing, & theater directing, and it draws on Skura's extensive experience as a core Skinner Releasing teacher and teacher trainer.
OSF focuses on cross-fertilizations and deep commonalities of Skinner Releasing technique and creative process. It's guided by the philosophy that the source of creativity & wisdom is available in each of us.
OSF Teacher Training is a rigorous program that prepares teachers to be inventive & responsive to specific needs & situations, while deeply understanding the underlying spirit & intentions of the work involved.
OSF offers methods to access depth, specificity, courage, rigor, honesty & freedom in movement, vocal practice & performance. Its aim is to empower participants to adapt these methods & discover their own in response to teaching & performance situations they find themselves in.
This is a two-year training with two intensive workshopping process in Oct/Nov of each year and homestudy to do during the rest of the year. The training includes one-on-one sessions with Skura.

Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy and Massage for fertility and during pregnancy
Biodynamic craniosacral therapy and massage are powerful tools for accessing the wisdom of your body while in a state of deep relaxation. Treatments give you the time and space to connect with yourself, your baby and the process of being pregnant. You can also practice nourishing ‘belly’ breathing and relaxed awareness techniques to participate in your own healing and to prepare for giving birth. Our therapists have been thoroughly trained in safe practice during all stages of pregnancy.
SOUL Birth Massage 60 minutes $80
This gentle massage cares for both you and your baby. Using healing aromatic oils, the therapist will melt away the tension in your body, mind and soul through a combination of rhythmic strokes, deep tissue techniques and gentle mobilisations. This treatment may be done on the table or on a futon on the ground where you will be supported by bolsters and pillows.
SOUL Birth CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY 60 minutes $80
Lying easily supported by bolsters and pillows – allow this gentle treatment to ease your way into a state of fluid bliss. Reduce anxiety and create the space to just BE.. Creating a baby is no small task and the nourishing quality inherent in craniosacral therapy reflects this understanding. Many of the common ailments of pregnancy, such as back, neck and shoulder pain, symphysis pubic discomfort (SPD), heartburn, nausea, cramps, fatigue, stress and anxiety can be worked with effectively. While one off treatments are a taste of bliss, regular treatments during pregnancy support a mother and baby in preparing themselves optimally for birth.
PREGNANCY YOGA
Ante-natal Yoga for nurturing and growing the new Mum and her blossoming being within. This class will focus on connecting you both, and developing a happier, healthier, less stressful pregnancy, easier labour and post-natal experience for both of you. Best after the 1t trimester.
SOUL BIRTH YOGA IS a private or small group class – focusing on individuality and personal care.
We can also recommend the Shin Yoga classes here at SOUL, as a regular yoga practice for those wanting to get pregnant, pregnancy and also post-natal.

Any of the three above for a three hour day of BIRTH bliss and receive a beautiful belly oil as our gift to you, and hot steamy tea and treats to nurture and nourish. 3 hours $240
Post-natal care :
A postpartum body is an ocean of change and a new baby counts as one of life’s major challenging events. Giving birth transforms women’s lives in profound, and often unexpected, ways. every experience is different, and each birth calls for a new integration of physical and spiritual well-being.
CRANIO-SACRAL THERAPY
After all that opening up, it is only natural to withdraw from the world and spend time recovering and bonding with your bundle of bliss!
In South East Asia there is a long-held traditional lie-in practice, which usually lasts a month, called Motherroasting. During that time, the mother is relieved of her usual household duties and waited on hand and foot so she can attend to the newborns needs. It is a special time for the mother and father to bond with the baby and the house is kept warm so that they can have as much skin-to-skin contact as possible, which is very soothing to the infant. While grandmothers and friends attend to the housework and provide meals to the couple, a therapist skilled in traditional healing arts will visit frequently to massage the mother ensuring that her milk supply is plentiful and that her body heals rapidly.
In keeping with this traditional practice, SOUL offers nurturing treatments at our clinic or in the comfort of your own home to help you adjust to the changes and demands of being a new mother!
MUM AND BABY YOGA
Mum and Baby Yoga provides mothers time to restore their bodies, calm their minds, and create community with other mums! The class is informal, lively, and interactive. Communication, touch, play and fun naturally occurs – as Mum and baby connect with themselves and each other.
Previous yoga experience is not necessary to fully benefit from the classes. This is a place where we honor the needs of parents and children.
Generally Mum and Baby Yoga is for Mums and
Babies from 6 weeks to crawling. It
is a good idea to wait for about 4 - 6 weeks after the delivery of your baby
before attending class. If you had a caesarean delivery this time should be
extended to about 8-10 weeks. In either case, please consult with your doctor
or LMC to ensure your safety.

Karma began her yoga journey over 10 years ago, learning from teachers of different Hatha yoga traditions in India, the UK and NZ. Her teaching and own practice is mostly influenced by the teachings of the Satyananda tradition of yoga, and her own love of flowing sequences of postures inspired from practicing Ashtanga yoga for several years.

Peter Miller
TEACHES ASTANGA YOGA
Peter has been practicing ashtanga yoga since around 1994, within this time also participating in workshops with Sri K pattabhi Jois, Dena Kingsberg and many times with Peter Sanson, his favoured teacher.
Through his years of practice he has experienced the powerful and beneficial transformational aspect of this yoga practice, both on the outer level (the body- the regaining of lost mobility and the achievement of a greater sense of balance within the body and, through this, a deeper sense of ownership of the body) and on the inner level (the mind- the calming of it through the focus on the breath and gaze points, helping to eliminate the constant thought barrage). Within this is seen also the power of the breath when used correctly, it being both calming and energizing to the body and mind.
His desire is to assist the student to go deeper within themselves, helping them to learn a deeper sense of self and body awareness and through this finding their way into a better sense of balance within the body and mind. The focus is on working with patience, using the breath as a primary focus, letting the body undergo change slowly and safely, at its own pace.
Tatiana Oleinik
TEACHES ASTANGA YOGA
Tatiana discovered Astanga a few years ago here at SOUL. From the first class she fell in love with this beautiful physically demanding practice which represents a mix of strength and flexibility. Very soon it became an essential part of her life, leading to a daily practice and participation in workshops with Dena Kingsberg and Peter Sanson.
Tatiana believes in regular practice and the importance of breath which is the “bridge between body and mind”.
Currently she is working towards her Diploma of Yoga at Wellpark College of Natural Therapies.
Catherine Albiston
TEACHES THE MYSORE YOGA
Catherine is the Director of Titirangi Ashtanga Yoga and teaches traditional Ashtanga yoga with a focus on the breath and softening the body. Absolute beginners, experienced practitioners and people of all ages are welcome. Catherine believes in the healing power of Ashtanga when practiced gently and regularly. Catherine has practiced Ashtanga yoga since 2000. She made her first visit to study with Sri K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Rangaswamy in Mysore, India in 2004. She was authorised to teach by them in March 2009. In New Zealand, Catherine has studied with Peter Sanson and Mike Berghan, and has taught in Wellington for around six years.
Lorraine Blackley
TEACHES DEEPENING TO LOVE
Lorraine has supported people making personal and professional transitions and changes for 30 years. Supporting professionals, academics, business owners, creative and social entrepreneurs, school leavers, stay at home parents and retiree’s to initiate and pursue their dreams. Her approach is unique, personalised and extremely relevant to the times. Working with Lorraine brings clarity of direction and confidence of choice, leading to greater motivation and follow through. She does not direct you in what you should do but facilitates an enquiry, which has you find your own unique and congruent solutions. Working with Lorraine brings clarity and momentum to previously stuck situations. Lorraine’s approach supports you to design your own perfect blueprint for your direction and development. Then she has you define the practical steps to bring that blueprint into being.

His study has led him to meditation and bodywork which he has been practicing for 25 years specializing in Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy for the last 18 years. He studied with Franklyn Sills at the Karuna Institute in Devon, UK where he became Franklyn's personal assistant for 5 years during the formation of the biodynamic approach, assisting Franklyn on many advanced courses. He also tutored with the CTET and has taught in the UK, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. He now has a busy practice in Auckland and is a senior tutor with the Body Intelligence Institute.
As a participant at the workstudy-program at Soul I get an experience of working at the centre in exchange for attending any Yoga and ChiKung-classes throughout the week. Today I get to do some admin work, arrange new flowers, tidy up the office, while Willa sees clients in the clinic, and later prepares for the evening Yoga class. What a peaceful environment to work and move in, what a privilege to be part of a community, created with an intention to offer a space for people to relax, release, nourish, be and learn more about the body, mind, spirit connection, in the midst of the frantic world we live in.
with love and gratitude

Love Soul Centre
BODY LOVE
Experience opening and unfolding in a new way. Bodylove is a workshop experience based on SRT bodywork, craniosacral therapy and shin somatics. It is a profound way to get loved up, warmed up and allow your body to open softly, gently and with care. Prepare to be body-loved.
RELEASE ME
A transformative movement, awareness and bodywork practice based on Skinnre Releasing Technique. Classes unfold around a simple principle that when we practice letting go of habitual holding patterns we can move more freely, efficiently and powerfully. Also includes our legendary low-flying trapeze.
SHIN YOGA
Classes and workshops focuses on opening and lengthening the body and quietening the mind. Based on the founding principle of Yoga - to create balance - we begin with balancing the nervous system and endocrine system, using asanas and pranayama inspired for healing and inner reflection.
SOMAKIDS
Movement, yoga and creative dance programs for kids. Children explore different ways of moving and being, in a fun, safe and expanded somatics environment. Wild somatic fun.
THE SCHOOL OF LOVE
A year-long process of unfoldment, bearing, sharing, receiving and embracing, self and others in a ritual weekly practice combining creative practice, meditation, movement, poetry and breath.
M-BODY
This is an energetic class that integrates principles of yoga, pilates, dance and simple muscle and bone technqiues to stimulate and condition the body and mind. A challanging work-out blending cardio, strength building and stretching that will improve rhythm, awareness and co-ordination.
SOUL is not-for-private-profit, we exist to provide opportunities for people to experience wellness in body, mind and spirit. We are always so grateful for any help towards creating this beautiful world. For ways you can help please see "How to BE here" or just become our SOUL MATE! We would love you forever!
ORGANIC CULTURE
SOUL is dedicated to creating an organic and sustainable business and environment. We use all organic products, recycle, have our own wormfarm and many other outlandish attempts to make our footprint more easy on the earth.
We are now also an incense-free zone, this means we can all breath easier, with happy lungs and what's more we are using soy candles and organic oils, instead of paraffin candles. Soy candles are much cleaner burning than paraffin candles (made out of petrolium). We also sell soy candles here at our SOUL Store, so come and buy some for yourself - come on and make the change.
For other ways that we make a difference, ask for our sustainability report.
COMMUNITY FOCUSED
SOUL Titirangi is here for you and our beautiful and unique community that is this wild west coast. SOUL has donated funds and time to community projects such as Titirangi Kindy, Titirangi Steiner School, Starship Hospitol, SpinningTop Foundation and Yoga stops Traffic. Connecting our local community to the needs of the global community. We are all one. We are currently looking for somewhere to create a SOUL community garden.
KARMA CREDITS
Karma credits is our workstudy program. You can exchange your time and skills for karma credits which can be used on any part of our SOUL program. Clinic sessions, classes, workshops or studio hire.
