ARTIST STATEMENT:
The goal of my work is to explore the materiality — literally and philosophically — of the institutions that hold sway over our (Americans, Catholics, Artists, etc.) collective conscious and outlook on the world. Most often, these interpretations result in something subversive and/or banal — a telling suggestion of the true nature of things once you have stripped away history, ritual, sentimentality, and any other artifice which stands in the way of objective understanding. By removing all or part of the narrative that we generally associate with the items and figures found in my work, the viewer becomes more aware of the materials used to produce the work itself as well as their surroundings — a quality I suggest is equally important in our everyday lives. As my aim is to create art relevant visually and thematically to a diverse and everchanging social landscape, I do not limit myself to specific materials or techniques, but rather respond as needed to the task at hand.
