We’re picking up the keys to our new place next week (eek!) and driving all the small stuff down first. This includes: clothes and books and pots and pans and, if they can fit in our cars, the 2 fold up chairs and poker table, which is our formal dining room. Since this is our third move in less than 4 years of marriage, The Boss and I have never really decorated our space. We’ve hung paintings and photos, but we’ve never really put our time, effort and love into making any space feel like home — though truthfully we’ve never had the desire to. But for some reason this move to New York feels different. There’s something about this move that feels like it will be semi-permanent. I don’t think we’ll stay in the apartment we’re moving into for several years, but we both have a gut feeling that we’ll be in the state and/or city longer than we’ve been anywhere else. Of course there’s no way to really know or confirm that, but for whatever reason The Boss and I have been constantly sending each other articles and slideshows that that feature great tips for living in small spaces. And it’s so fun looking at creative and inspiring ways to make any place feel more personalized. I can’t say for sure that we’ll have the time, budget or even be allowed (it’s a rental property after all) to make our new space more reflective of our personalities, but part of the fun in moving (we’ve learned) is that you always get a blank canvas. And moving is also a great opportunity to downsize; go through your junk and live with less clutter.

So finally! Tuesday will mark the last day of The Boss’s killer commute to and from New York! He drives 120 miles round trip (commute only; this doesn’t count the driving he does to meet clients once he’s at work) daily, which has really stung us financially because of gas prices. Mostly he gets a “good deal” around $4.13 (WHAT?!), but has had to fill up his tank every 2-3 days while we wait for our leases to end/start. So you do the math. No, seriously, you do the math it’s too much for me.

The other day we were driving home when The Boss shouted, “$3.95!!!” and almost turned the car up on 2 wheels as he made an illegal U-turn in the middle of traffic. His squeal was reminiscent of the excitement a woman sees when she stands on a scale after spending all week being in a pretend race with the guy on the treadmill next to her. So we filled up for less than 4 dollars and yeah it was nice to fill up for less than usual, but it also made me realize how low our standards have gotten since we’ve all become so accustomed to being spanked by the horrible economy for the last several years.

During the week I’m in charge of most of the busy work items that come with changing your address. I don’t mind though. Between trying to connect with people about jobs and writing it’s nice to take a break even if that means having to make phone calls and run errands. The last two weeks I’ve been packing up the stuff we’ll drive down next week and rationing our meals since we don’t want to buy any new perishable items (with the exception of milk of course!) before we move. The worst thing in the world is to have everything packed and ready to go and then realize you also need to pack a cooler full of ice because you decided to buy fresh ingredients for the 8 pizzas you were going to make because you planned on having a Goodbye Apartment! party that never materialized because your formal dining table is strapped to the roof of your car. Life lesson learned.

The Boss and I have been a Febreze and method brand of air fresheners family since we got married, but recently I thought we could try something new. Ralph Lauren has a home fragrance collection, which I swear is impossible to find on the Interwebz so I did the only genius shopper thing and took a trip to Marshalls! And of course that’s where I found several of Ralphy’s home sprays. I went through a few and then found “Sky,” which is so welcoming and soft; it reminds me of a meadow of flowers and can make almost any space (with the exception of the women’s restroom at that one rest stop on the Jersey Turnpike) feel like home. To get this spray you could check the Home sections (bed and bath) at some big department stores, but I didn’t have any luck there so if you’re close to a T.J. Maxx or Marshalls I think you’ll have better luck there.
