In the end, when asked why sports are important to women or young girls, I have to answer in a way that points out the movement forward in women’s rights. That has always been a part of the reason why I run and partly why my dedication to the sport is so strong. Long before I became a successful athlete, running gave me a voice against the people in my life who had taken advantage, put me down or abused me in some way. Running was my way out of feeling helpless. It gave me the backbone to stand up for myself, and I believe that any sport has the potential to do this.
I am 28 years old today! This year has been a very good one. I live with the best guy in the world and the best dog in the world in a cheerful yellow house. My running injury opened up an opportunity to learn how to swim athletically, and now I can keep up with some of the more serious swimmers at the gym. :) I’m a master of destruction magic in Skyrim (also, a werewolf), and tonight I get to eat dinner at Edo’s Squid!
Thanks to all of you family and friends who have kept me afloat on the good and the bad days. You are the reason I feel so loved, and I hope you know that I love you too.
