We love nature, and all the phenomenon it creates. Therefor, we are fascinated by the refraction and reflection of water we see under the sea, and the ceiling of the pool house. The light go through the surface of the moving water, create beautiful patent composed of sharp light lines, laying on the wall.
Ripple is a project studying the beauty of glass material. While a focus beam of light projected through a gently rotating mouth-blown glass dome, shadow and light form a breathtaking, ever-changing pattern, where the aesthetic goes beyond the material itself.
The process of making this project includes both tradition glass craft skills and modern production engineering of the moving parts. The duo work closely with materials and found the beauty of glass lies in the uneven surface results from mouth-blowing process, while the craft skill makes the beauty of glass frozen in time, the elegant rotating movement brings the flow of material back to life, as if the dome exists with an uncertainty.
2012 - still continue
Bronze China is a big project that ShiKai cooperate with Chinese-craftsmen in Henan, China since Jan. 2012. By applying their craft techniques, we aim to produce new and usable contemporary objects rather than reproducing the replica of the ancient pieces, which is what they do nowadays.
The project has two goals-
first, let other designers or companies know the craftsmen in this bronze village have great skill and production ability. Second, there are about 200 companies in this village doing and selling very similar objects at the moment; to avoid the ruinous competition, we can bring different type of orders to them, then create diversity of business environment.
In the aspect of design, this project investigates the material of wax and copper alloy, and dig into every single process with the local craftsmen. In the end we create five objects - lamps (2 types), mirrors (3 sizes), door stops, plates, and the containers.
This project is still on going.

We can create a wide variety of different kinds of surface textures and colours by using techniques such as spraying, dying, painting or adding plastic masterbatch when we use injection moulding. However, what is the purpose of giving the objects particular kinds of surface qualities? Are we trying to affect user’s emotions? To give the item a higher value? Or we are trying to simulate some of the fascination we feel in response to surface complexities we find in natural settings?
The meaning of “photography” is “writing light,” or using light to achieve the graphic. Light projected onto film makes the chemical layers react, and then shows the colours or reverse colour of the illuminated objects on the film or photo paper.
When we thinking about creating surfaces and giving colour, putting colour on paper is in a sense the same as giving colour to an object, so I believe it would be a strong idea to use the principle of photography to give colour to objects. In particular, we usually associate photography with a kind of illusionism that reduces the three-dimensional into the two-dimensional, but in this case, the three-dimensional will be rather translated into another three-dimensional reality.

18 - 20 May, 24 - 27 May, 31 May - 2 Jun 7:00PM
19 - 20 May, 26 - 27 May, 2 Jun 3:30PM
