- Meet you in Milan Design Week 2012Bronze China Project show in " MOKSPACE - East meets West: Art & Design Now! "
The "Bronze China" project will show in "East meets West: Art and Design Now " in London from 24 of April to 6 of May. "East meets West: Art and Design Now " is a exhibition hosted by Design online platform Art Thread and New Korean Gallery Mokspace which is just next to British Museum .The show exhibits the works of 20 young artists and designers from Korea, Taiwan, China, Japan, Hong Kong and Macau – many currently working in London. The show reveals the stimulating variety of creative energy emanating from these countries, and which is increasingly impacting on the capitals – and indeed – the worlds, art scene.Address: MOKSPACE - 33 Museum Street, London WC1A 1LH
Bronze China Project with RCA Paradise in Milan Design Week 2012

- Bronze China Project
- STILL WORKING IN PROGRESSBronze China is a project cooperating with Chinese-craftsmen in Henan, China, and trying to bring them another possible future.
YanJian, a small village in Henan Province, more than 30% of people live there are involved into the same business - copying and selling ancient bronzepieces. The pieces they made are used to be sold on the antique markets or become the souvenir in the museums and shops. They changed their homes become workshops, build traditional kilns and hire their families and friends. These people build many amazing replicas by limit resource and tools. Also, this business keep young people staying in the village, instead of going to other big cities for earning money to feed their families.
Nowadays, more than 1100 people, two hundred companies are all doing this bronze replica business, but the products they sell are almost the same, replicas.
The "Bronze China" project is the first step of reconfigure this situation, and aim to bring new concepts to this place － originality, creativity, honest and fair trading. In another words, to cooperate with the local craftsmen to create new objects which could fit in our current society, with new form and new meaning.To communicate with local company and craftsmen, ShiKai Tseng stay in this village for 3 weeks, deeply understand their process – soil sculpting, wax carving, mold making, lost wax casting, welding and antique techniques. He creates “Bronze China” collection in the end, applying or innovate their existing skills on to different objects.
Bronze Mirror is one of the collections. (some other works are still in progress)
The ancient Chinese mirrors they copy usually are round and handy. One side is fully polished as mirror, and another side is decorated by different beautiful carving and patterns. Here, the new mirror aim to show that the nature property of the material also can be a way to shape the product, rather than always treat it as a carving material.
It was inspired by the way the Chinese-craftsmen making their own wax board. I pour the wax on the stone board, layers by layers. It becomes a painting, drawing by my movement, temperature of wax, tension and gravity. It presents the property of wax, and the beauty of patina on bronze.
And here is the final products of the Mirror.
ps. although the project is called "Bronze China", but the craftsmen nowadays not only cast pieces by bronze, but also copper and brass, thus this mirror series is made of brass.

- PhotoGraphy no.2
- Series 02“PhotoGraphy” is the creation of a process in which the environment, time and light react to each other and generate images on three-dimensional objects.The 2nd series is about folding the photographic paper into a three-dimensional shape, which includes a light seal on the backside, with the addition of one to two pinholes. Thus, an object is not only an object anymore, but also a camera which can take a photo on itself.“The Reversed Royal Albert Hall” is my first work under this structure. I apply the method I mentioned to record the interior of the hall by the smaller itself which is made of photographic paper. With 7 hours exposure time passing in this meaningful and memorable building in London, the huge scene of the hall had been absorbed into the small model through a tiny pinhole and printed on the surface. If we flip it inside out, you can clearly see the light, cloud-shape decoration and the surrounding become the new texture of this scale Albert Hall.It not only shows the new possibilities to record the experience and atmosphere by the surrounding or building itself, but also the simplest way to taking photo – just folding the photosensitive paper into a closing box.

- PhotoGraphy no.1
- Series 01
“PhotoGraphy” project is the creation of a process in which the environment, time and light react to each other and generate images on three-dimensional objects. The 1st series is about coating objects with a “light-sensitive” layer, put in a black box with strategically placed pinholes, and exposed for 5 to 50 minutes depending on the brightness of the environment. It is a new way to capture a moment in time, no matter whether the image on the object is focused or losing focus – the object will carry the trace of its first moments of experience, its first exposure.
We can create a wide variety of different kinds of surface textures and colours by using techniques such as spraying, dying, painting or adding plastic masterbatch when we use injection moulding. However, what is the purpose of giving the objects particular kinds of surface qualities? Are we trying to affect user’s emotions? To give the item a higher value? Or we are trying to simulate some of the fascination we feel in response to surface complexities we find in natural settings?
The meaning of “photography” is “writing light,” or using light to achieve the graphic. Light projected onto film makes the chemical layers react, and then shows the colours or reverse colour of the illuminated objects on the film or photo paper.
When we thinking about creating surfaces and giving colour, putting colour on paper is in a sense the same as giving colour to an object, so I believe it would be a strong idea to use the principle of photography to give colour to objects. In particular, we usually associate photography with a kind of illusionism that reduces the three-dimensional into the two-dimensional, but in this case, the three-dimensional will be rather translated into another three-dimensional reality.

- Moulding
When we throw the waste paper into the bin, somehow, we are creating a new object at the same time.But the problem is - what are we creating actually? rubbish? or just a block of paper?
“Moulding” makes “recycle the waste paper” this behavior become the process of creating a beautiful object. Whenever we throw every paper into the basket, they all become a part of the vase. However, in the moment we complete the vase, it also means it’s time to say goodbye. She will leave us and take the recycle cart, then start her next life.
People have different recycling cultures in different countries. In Asia, people used to give the recycling to the recycle truck. In Europe, People just put them in front of the flat, and the cleaner will come to bring it away. In this case, you will see the following interesting scenes:Asians throw the paper vases to the truck, and Europeans line the vases in front of their house.

- The Door
Door always plays a very interesting role in our lives. It gives us a direction, an entry point to another place, or a gate of a boundary. Sometimes, it is an exit, a way to escape from something you dislike, and showing the place full of hopes. Sometimes, it blocks something you want to be away from. You image there is something evil on the other side of the door. “The Door” is a project about representing your experience or memory of doors. It is made of a real size door and been given a 12cm deep frame and the light source behind the opal acrylic. When people open it, the switch will be actived immediately and turns the light on.

- Have a Lovely Baby
In Chinese culture, we used to send a red envelope with the blessing and fortune to our families or friends while they get married. “Have a lovely baby” is one of the classical sentence for this moment.“Have a lovely baby” is a new design of the red envelope. The pregnant and bellied shape create a metaphor of “have a lovely baby”. On the other hand, it also represents the best marriage. The fortune and words which means blessing are put into this pregnant red envelope and sent to the new couple. Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1984,
ShiKai Tseng (曾熙凱) is a London base designer who graduated from Royal College of Art in 2011.
Influence by oriental culture and western spirit of adventure, his works represent subtle and experimental characteristic at the same time. After starting his MA course in Design Products of Royal College of Art, he established his own practice. He is particularly interested on challenging all kind processes of production, and brings the usual process to a new stage.
