Let’s be honest. Figuring out what adapter to use when you are traveling is a bitch. Do I need Adapter B Plug 6? Or is it Adapter E Plug 11? Well Josh and I worked together and launched a new feature at FLIGHT 001 where you can just type in the country you are traveling to and we will pull the adapter you need. Your life, simplified.

    Check it out.

ever wanted to make something but had no idea how to do it? prototype? crazy robot? conical pizzas? talk to the kontraptionist. he probably has a time machine and/or a spaceship kicking around the shop. and he probably made them from an old clock and a pen cap. move the f over, macgyver.

    kontraptionist:

Brand new drive shaft assemblies, just put together today in the lab - These are going to be for a very beefy robot for artist Dragan Ilic. It’s going to be somewhat like a radio controlled Roomba with a half kilometer range that can carry 500 lbs. More to come.

357|365 It just isn’t the same - Mimic (via comatosed)

A few people on Flickr have mimicked shots that I’ve done during my 365 - linked their shots to mine as sort of a tribute. But I think this might be the first one that literally made me laugh out loud…and then keep laughing out loud. Gotta love a sense of humor, and definitely love a man with pink lacy panties?

hah! made me laugh too. be sure to check out original image of lauren’s here (warning: make sure you have lots of time, because you’ll probably end up spending hours going through her awesome photostream).

Bank error NOT in my favor!

I will never again deposit a check into a Chase ATM. It misread the amount on a check, the tellers in the branch just shrugged and claimed it would be auto-fixed, the terribly designed interface of the online banking website doesn’t show images of deposited checks, and over a month later I am still being passed around to phone operators and waiting on a “pending investigation”.

I know they are evil for slinging those sub-prime mortgages, but I miss the stellar customer service and (comparatively) great website design of WaMu :(

Nice writeup on the Uptown/Downtown Compass App (and the fonts therein) in the Hoefler & Frere-Jones blog. The blog itself is worth following for anyone interested in design in general and especially all things typographically related.

No Pants is mentioned on the back page of this month’s Marie Claire. I guess the red text is to indicate they are making a joke?  Either that or we’re working with Lady Gaga, and I didn’t even know it.  Although they credit the photographer for the other 6 photos on the page, they didn’t bother to do it for our photo.  I’m trying to figure out who the photographer is, but with literally thousands of No Pants photos on Flickr from the past few years, it’s tough.  Chad? Katie? Steph?  I want to know on who’s behalf to be pissed off.

That one isn’t mine, I’ll look at the others at my friend’s (shout out) magazine stand in LA.

wow, lame. it’s not mine (but i actually thought it was for a second!). i do remember shooting at that stop in 2007 (beginning of the ride, it would be at the top of people’s sets) and also that girl in general. the photos from this event always seem to travel far and wide and are rarely, if ever, credited back to the photographer :(

    Amit Gupta posted this yesterday:

I want to buy something to solve a problem, and I want it to be good. It doesn’t need to be the cheapest or even the best money can buy, just a very good, reliable, solution. […] Here’s where most review sites fail: They assume I want to read reviews. I do not. I want to be told which thing to buy.

    I completely agree. I present: theshittoget.com

I actually started making this last November but got distracted and never finished it (until last night). I’m an electronics geek and bad at hiding it, and people occasionally ask me to recommend things. My answers are almost always the same and revolve around the same general categories, so I figured they might be useful collected into a web site.

Of course, it’s impossible to say that any one product is the definitive best in its category, so this only represents my personal opinions and caveat emptor, etc. Still, if you want the simplest answer to the question “which x should I buy?” I’m going to tell you the same thing whether you’re a super A/V nerd like me or someone who just wants some decent headphones.

awesome. i loved amit’s ranty post about this topic. it’s the reason i currently do not own speakers, a television, or a good set of knives. the decision (and subsequent amount of research involved) is just too paralyzing. just tell me what to buy!

I’ve lived in New York for 10 years and have done it. Admit it, you’ve done it too:

Exited the subway and walked a whole block before you realized you were going the wrong direction.

What? Sometimes the Empire State Building isn’t visible to let you know which way is uptown, ok? Sometimes there’s a crush of holiday shoppers that momentarily bewilders the innate sense of city direction. Sometimes you live in Brooklyn and only foray into the upper whichever side once a year and everything just looks totally the same. Whatever the reason, your future 5 minutes of going the wrong way and doubling back have just been saved (and at New Yorkers’ brisk pace, every minute counts!). Behold: the Uptown App, an Uptown/Downtown compass aligned to the Manhattan street grid!

It is super awesome, and you should try it. Full disclosure: as soon as I got my iphone, I was desperate for this. And being the techy/programmer/design geek that he is, Andy whipped it up. His very first app! For only a buck! A steal, in my completely totally unbiased opinion :)

Congrats Andy! Can’t wait for his next one.

As a holiday present for Andy and some friends, the enchanting Mayur Subbarao (who you may remember from the Phojojo Food Photograhy Extravaganza at Whisk&Ladle) graciously agreed to host a private demonstration on making homemade vermouth along with his better half, the lovely Nora, hostess with the mostest (literally, as it was their second shift of entertaining that day). Delicious cocktails were had, facts about obscure botanicals were learned, custom bottle labels were made, and a fabulous time was had by all. Giant amazing thanks to our hosts for generously offering up their home and talents!

    Hello 209 followers!

Wow. To be totally honest, I never thought anybody would follow this blog. It was initially created for the purpose of chronicling the “time off” spent after quitting my job in 2008 before I got a new job. But a funny thing happened: I never went back to a cubicle. Which is awesome! However, since I now officially consider myself “self employed”, the name of this blog has become a bit of a misnomer. Additionally, there is a bit of confusion because some people don’t know that “funemployed” is me, since everywhere else on the internets I go by “sgoralnick”.

Luckily, tumblr provides the functionality to change my name and URL. Unfortunately, there would be some consequences. Namely: outside links, RSS feeds, and links within reblogs would be broken. Is anyone out there following this via RSS? In the broader scheme of things, I’m not an extremely prolific blogger, and while I don’t like the idea of breaking things, perhaps with regards to the benefit of a name change it wouldn’t be so bad?

In any case, I am becoming paralyzed by the decision, and am desperately requesting feedback from you! Oh 209, won’t you please advise me? Should I change or stay the same?

  • December 03, 12:04 PM

The internets are all a-twitter this morning with the news of Laura Brunow Miner’s* online photo story magazine, Pictory.

I am thrilled to not only have been invited to guest-design the first feature, Overseas and Overwhelmed, but also to be interviewed as the first featured contributor. If you like great photos (BIG ones, 1000 pixels wide!) and the stories behind them, then Pictory is for you. Come see what it’s all about and submit a photo+story of your own at www.pictorymag.com

    * To give you a little bit of background, Laura is the former editor-in-chief of JPG Magazine, and the force behind Phoot Camp.

From a weekend last summer I spent at a lake house in New Jersey with Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson.

(click the thumbnails to view slideshow)

No, really. I had the honor and the pleasure to fill in for set photographer Niko Tavernise for a few days during the shooting of The Messenger (which opened yesterday!). If you’ve ever seen the movie poster for a little film called, oh, THE WRESTLER, then you have seen Niko’s work. Check out some more of his awesome behind-the-scenes images here: The Wrestler The Fountain The Messenger.

Having never worked on a film set before, it was intriguing to see the amazing array of talent and the herculean effort that goes into producing the final product. Being responsible for capturing it all is a thrilling task, what with all the excitement, creativity, celebrities, not to mention professionally perfect lighting. But man, is it grueling! Looooong days, annnnngry actors (who apparently all hate set photographers), it is not for the faint of heart.

Woody Harrelson was actually quite pleasant though. He came over to introduce himself, and messed around with my camera a bit, taking pictures of Ben.

Even as a graphic designer, many of the font-related trivia questions that were part of the AIGA’s “The Type is RIght” game-show challenge were completely beyond me, but everyone was excited to support Andy and his colleagues Jonathan Hoefler and Sara Soskolne from Hoefler & Frere-Jones as they blazed the road to victory. A nerdalicious evening, it was amusing to explain the few of the designey inside-jokes that weren’t over my head to the bewildered non-designer friends among us:

“Uh, why did everyone just laugh?”

“OMG, because the guy on the opposing team designed the font that the question is about, HAHAHA!”

In an effort to bring sportsfan-like enthusiasm to a geeky event, Brian and Suzette even went so far as to create a set of brilliant signs for our cheering section. Standouts include “HELVETICA SUCKS” (set in arial) and “Corona and Wingdings” (mmm, wingdings).
