Hey friends! Know how I won’t shut up about comics and how awesome they are? WELL, for the next 48ish hours, over 700 #1 issues from Marvel Comics are free on Comixology. What is Comixology? It’s like iTunes for comics. If you have an iPad, or an iPhone, or a laptop, it’s a great way to read comics. Get the app in iTunes! If finding and going to a comic store, which can be quite intimidating, has kept you from checking out comics, then this app is essential.
But 700 #1 issues?! That’s a lot! What’s good? What if you have only seen the latest Marvel films? What should you buy? I, of course, have opinions on this!
Here are some #1 issues that you can try without knowing anything about comics outside of what you’ve absorbed through pop culture and/or the movies. I would include hyperlinks but Comixology is understandably crash-y right now. Instead, I will provide the accurate titles that you can search for.
- Thor: God of Thunder #1 - Great Thor epic that is kind of trippy, starring three Thors from different time periods, but it draws on new characters and new concepts, meaning you just need to know that Thor is a Norse god who hangs out on Earth with mortals.
- Young Avengers Vol. 2 #1 - It says Vol. 2, but this is a fresh start. 18 year old heroes in one of the most fun and modern stories of today.
- Avengers Academy #1 - Like stories about kids in fantastical school settings? Check this out! A totally new crop of super-teens enroll to be the next Avengers…but of course there’s a twist.
- New Avengers #1 - A bit of a deeper cut, but this is the jumping on point for about 5+ years worth of Avengers stories. It was Marvel’s attempts to put all of their A-Listers on one team, so if you wanna see Spider-Man and Wolverine pal around with Iron Man and Captain America, this is your book.
- Captain America #1 - The start of the best Cap story ever, in my opinion. If you saw the Cap film, then read this (it’s also the basis for the sequel, probably). Way more political thriller than superhero comic, with emotionally wrenching drama.
- Guardians of the Galaxy #1 - Another deep cut, but if you like being thrown in the deep end, Star Wars-style, and wanna know what the upcoming film holds, read this. It’s got characters that are infinitely enjoyable and a sense of humor unlike any other comic.
- Silver Surfer: Parable #1 - A two part story by Stan Lee with French legend Moebius on art. It isn’t really in Marvel continuity, and is a great stand alone tale. Incredibly essential, and a testament to Stan Lee’s talent, and a great introduction to Moebius’ influential art.
- Deadpool Vol. 2 #1 - If you have even a passing knowledge of Deadpool and/or don’t appreciate him, give this a shot. It’s his first ongoing, it’s the first time a writer tried to make the character work, and it’s just hilarious and so much fun. And it has a great pay-off, sticks the landing, 25 issues in.
- Fantastic Four #1 - It’s the first modern Marvel Comic ever, so, if you REALLY wanna get in on the ground floor AND find out what 1960s comics were like, there’s no better place to start than where it all started.
- Iron Man #1 - A modern classic Iron Man story and the basis of Iron Man 3 (sorta). This is the story that made Iron Man a viable Marvel character again, and holds up on its own.
- Civil War #1 - This was the biggest Marvel event of the past 10 years, and one of the very few that people regard as great. Amazing art, big battles, not the best comic story ever, but a nice buffet sampling of a lot of different heroes. Also, Bush-era political overtones!
- Black Widow #1 - There’s also a Black Widow Vol. 1 #1, which is also good, but I’m talking about Black Widow #1 (I have no idea why all of this is so confusing). But this is a great story about Black Widow with great art. Want more of her? Do this.
- Captain Marvel #1 - Carol Danvers has become something of a Tumblr icon, and this series is why. Please check it out, and since the art has proven divisive, if you aren’t a fan of it, please go to issue #9 and see if that’s more your fancy. Great series that’s only getting greater.
- Daredevil Vol. 3 #1 - Fun, humorous, good time Daredevil (way more complex and rewarding than the Ben Affleck movie) with gorgeous, innovative art. Do it.
- Doctor Strange: The Oath #1 - Don’t know what this character’s deal is? I didn’t really either. Then I read this mini-series (only 5 issues!) and man, I love it. The best art, a great story by Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man). Essential.
- Gravity #1 - One of the most delightful new characters to come out of comics, emphasis on “new” meaning you don’t have to know a ton of history.
- Hawkeye #1 - THE BEST COMIC BOOK BEING MADE TODAY YOU WILL LOVE THIS IT IS FANTASTIC ABSOLUTELY LEGENDARY
- Immortal Iron Fist #1 - SAME AS ABOVE EXCEPT REPLACE TODAY WITH 2008ISH. If you are reading and enjoying Hawkeye, THIS is where Fraction and Aja first made art.
- Runaways #1 - The most original and accessible idea Marvel has had since the ’60s, with characters you will love with every part of your soul.
- Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine #1 - This mini-series is just ridiculous, high-concept, hilarious, stand-alone, epic genius/delightful nonsense. I love it.
- Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1 - One of the cleanest and continuity clutter free #1s in the Spider-Man section of the sale. A solid Spidey story with lovely Terry Dodson art.
- Spider-Man: Blue #1 - A gorgeously illustrated overview of Spider-Man’s heyday in a lovely miniseries.
- Thor: The Mighty Avenger #1 - Want a great comic in the same vein as the delightful film? This is it, and maybe even more.
- Ultimate Comics Spider-Man Vol. 2 #1 - Listen, the title is super confusing, I know, but this is the debut of a new kid as a new Spider-Man, and as he learns how to be Spider-Man, he becomes your favorite Spider-Man.
- Wolverine Vol. 1 #1 - Maybe the definitive Wolverine story, as well as the basis of this summer’s film, this story is solid and also an early example of Frank Miller’s genius (pre “Sin City,” “Batman: Year One” and “The Dark Knight Returns”)
- Astonishing X-Men #1 - JOSS WHEDON WRITING THE X-MEN AND IT IS AS GREAT AS THAT SOUNDS
- Uncanny X-Force #1 - This is pretty continuity heavy, but I think the writing makes it accessible. I suggest it because the first 18 issues constitute one of the best long-form stories I’ve ever read in comics.
- X-Men #1 - If you LOVED the ’90s cartoon and haven’t read this, just do it. Just read it. Just fall in love. It’s verbose, but the art is top notch, iconic stuff, and the characters are all of your faves.

That is me singing the STAR WARS theme. I am singing it for you. It is a special treat.Fantasy Flight’s owned the Star Wars license for more than a year now, but all that’s meant for us is one passable card game. Until today. The X-Wing Miniatures Game is THE release this month. Tiny, pre-painted spaceships, jinking past lasers that could reduce them to a sneeze in less time than it takes an extra to scream “I’M HIT”.
But SHOULD YOU BUY IT? Short answer: “Yes.” Long answer: “Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaah,” followed by a thoughtful pause and a speech like this…Might need to buy this.
