On the curvaceous road to enlightenment, trying to appreciate the potholes, looking at the road-side flowers and listening to my funky beat.

A couple of impressions from their first show at the Knitting Factory Brooklyn. The pics don't really capture the awesome visuals, much less the musicianship of course.
I strolled by Rockefeller Center tonight to revel in some tourist vibes. Don't you dare say the tree has been over-decorated! The hundreds of sparkling lights are not even visible on the pictures!
The biggest single target has been the Clean Air Act, which House Republicans have attacked in 61 separate votes on the House floor." http://democrats.energycommerce.house.gov/index.php?q=news/energy-commerce-republicans-vote-to-exempt-arsenic-heavy-metals-and-industrial-mining-operation
Really liked the vibe in my neighborhood after the rain tonight, so I made a little video: Bushwick rooftop 360° view
I'm a sucker for cafes and NYC has become a very exciting place for people like me in the last few years. There are a ton of independent cafes now that take their coffee seriously and go to great lengths to create the "perfect" cup. It has gotten to the point already where you can have your Joe prepared in a $20,000 brewer, a multi-stage siphon, or even choose how you want your cup brewed (drip, French Press, cold infusion, etc.).
However what has been lacking are cafes that build on the regional origin of their beans. Out of the hundreds of Starbucks, hipster chains and indie shops in NYC there are very few cafes that draw a direct line to the region(s) where the coffee was grown. I only know of a Brazilian cafe in Gramercy, there used to be a couple of Juan Valdez cafes (Colombian) and one little African shop in Hell's Kitchen called BKoffie (already closed) which was the first to have a French Press-to go cup (ingenious invention).
Have you ever been in love with a plain-old super market?
Sounds crazy I know, but imagine yourself in a far-away country, all of a sudden stumbling over food items in a neighborhood grocery store that you had the last time when you were a child.
Cupid's arrow struck me today as I was walking down an isle at Food Bazaar in Bushwick, Brooklyn. First I couldn't believe my eyes, but there it was, "Napolitanke" by Kraš. A thin wafer candy made in Croatia, whose design and flavor has remained unchanged for decades, going all the way back to the long lost time when there was a Yugoslavia proper.
For me spoiled Capitalist brat growing up in Germany, that was the only candy worth bringing home from family vacations to Yugo in the 80's. And now I can have it anytime, and about 7 varieties of it, for $2.20 a box!
Keep them coming @afrobeatles! This one is very smooth, especially when MJ kicks in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpYBw2lRDyE
Great example of what a single YouTube posting can accomplish. This video got over 1 million views in less than 1 day since it was posted on Monday the 3rd, and Ted Williams, the homeless man with the golden voice, has reportedly already been offered a position at the local radio station.
- YouTube video was removed from YouTube, then reposted - (Columbus Dispatch explanation of what happened)
Update:
After getting another 11 million views on its 2nd day on YouTube the video's been transferred to The Columbus Dispatch, the newspaper for which the "discoverer" of Ted Williams, a Mr. Doral Chenoweth III (yes, he's the third), works for.
In the meantime, Ted Williams got on a local radio show on Tuesday where he was offered a job with the Cleveland Cavaliers. His first national TV interview on CBS followed the same day. The media tried to dig stuff up from his past criminal record, and some complained that the story was being exploited to push the "american dream" angle of this story.
NBC, in a shrewed move, got a hold of Ted Williams in Ohio on Wednesday and flew him to NYC. CBS thought it a good move to in turn pick up his mom and drive her to LaGuardia when her son's plane was supposed to land, resulting in some awkward conversation with his mom when they got stood up because NBC had whisked away Ted Williams right after he had landed, having apparently gotten wind of CBS's move.
Yes, you read right, NBC did not let Ted Williams see his mom after 20 years, who presumably already was at the airport at the time of his arrival, because NBC didn't want CBS to get footage of him in before his appearance on the Today Show... Read more on how the two stations were fighting each other.
So finally, after multiple appearances on the Today Show this Thursday morning, both networks agreed to share cameras at the re-unification of Ted and his mom. I have to admit though that NBC was overall quite respectful and generous to Mr. Williams. To hire a psychologist to help him handle the stress is a nice move and more helpful than any luxury hotel suite or new clothes (which they apparently haven't gotten him yet; he has to after all still look like he was just picked up from the streets). He is also set up with an agent who fields various job offers and will hopefully help him get a full-time, decently paying gig.
If you want to get better information than the superficial, albeit heart-warming interviews the networks provide, go over to the Columbus Dispatch's video section that has done some real journalistic work. Go to minute 8:10 in the Chenoweth interview for the real background story. You'll hear that the video was actually shot 6 weeks ago to be published on a slow news day, and more on how NBC and CBS are handling Ted and his mother.
Good luck to Ted Williams and may we all learn from this to be decent human beings ourselves next time we're approached by a homeless person.

The World Music Charts Europe is one of my favorite ways to keep up with the latest and greatest releases in the so-called world music scene. The charts are compiled monthly through a survey of dozens of radio journalists all across Europe who host their own world music programs. These charts have nothing to do with sales numbers; the only measure is how much an album is liked by these dedicated global music lovers.
I highly recommend signing up for their monthly newsletter so you’ll always know about phantastic new music releases that are usually not promoted on TV or mainstream radio stations.
Every end of the year WMCE compiles a chart of their favorite 200 albums of the year. For anyone who wants to jump into the global music scene, this is a great starting off point. A lot of my favorites are further down in the list, so don’t go strictly by chart position. Check out the list below and discover new music spanning Angolan Kuduro (Dance Mwangolé), Brazilian avant-pop (CéU), Colombian Hip-Hop (Choc Quib Town), Malian-Cuban fusion (AfroCubism), Eastern European gypsy brass crossover (various albums), US-Middle Eastern Gypsy crossover (Balkan Beat Box), Eritrean soul music (Asmara All Stars), Slovenian Balkan pop (Magnifico), and much much more.
There is so much amazing music out there and so many cross-cultural projects being recorded, which might lead to the creation of entirely new styles, that I think you owe it to yourself, as the lover of music that you are, to sample some of these albums. The world is filled with phantastic music, go and explore the treasures of human expression!
See the entire list after the jump. The following list has been copied from the monthly WMCE newsletter. The full list will be searchable soon at giftmusic.de/wmce.

Being someone who gets easily sucked into the depths of the internet and loses track of time (damn you hyperlinks!), I have to finally admit I'm in need of some gentle reminder to take regular breaks from staring at the screen. I bet you haven't done that in the last 60 minutes either (if you happen to be an internet addict that is). Well, there is help in the form of a little gem of a software called Workrave. Workrave let's you set reminders to take frequent micro-breaks, breaks, and even set a daily limit of computer use.
Micro-breaks are meant to rest your eyes and relax for a few seconds, maybe every 10-15 minutes, you set the frequency. You can schedule full breaks at a longer interval and useful exercises pop-up on the screen to stretch your neck, relieve eye tension and more (there are 10 exercises in total). You can set the amount of exercises per break and they are selected randomly. Finally, you can even select a total time of daily computer use, after which you'll get increasingly urgent reminders. While taking your breaks you can have Workrave block any input (so you don't get tempted) and even have your wallpaper hide all open windows.
The software notices when you are active on the computer, so breaks are only counting down if you abstain from touching that damn thing. Also, if you leave your computer running while stepping off, Workrave will stop the countdown to your next break time, and resumes it once you return to your computer. That way the breaks are scheduled in consideration of your actual time staring at the screen.
All breaks can be freely set up to your own needs and willingness to be nagged. At the very least it will induce you to take some very healthy breaks, which will actually increase your productivity in the course of the day (or at least make your time-wasting surfing habits a bit healthier).
Workrave is free and open-source, runs on Windows and Linux (maybe on Mac as well).

Afrika21 is the definitive voice of Africa's emerging creative thinkers in music, art & culture. Presently, coverage of the continentʼs fundamental weaknesses - civil war, poverty, and helplessness, overshadow the well of innovation rapidly emerging from Africa and the Diaspora. Afrika21 gives audiences a first hand look at 21st century contemporary African music and culture to create a new dialogue around Africa. The Afrika21 Mixtape Project is an opportunity to celebrate Africaʼs next wave of musicians, highlight the renaissance taking place on the continent and raise the profile of people and organizations working toward framing a new vision of Africa in the 21st century.

The standouts are the high content of calcium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), vitamin K, potassium, manganese, copper, and even the plant form of omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid). In addition to the carotenoid beta-carotene, kale contains other very important carotenoid molecules called lutein and zeaxanthin (both necessary for eye health) and numerous others (probably too many to count, and maybe even yet identified).

Comparison of the big music stores and a few other: I am a fan of electronic music and although I agree that Beatport is a great site, which gets a lot of music exclusively or early, I hardly ever use them because they are so expensive. I often listen to music on there and then hunt it down on other sites, such as Junodownload, 7digital, Boomkat or Bleep. But thumbs up to Beatport for having a good iphone app.
