Someone Called the FBI on NYPD Officers Pretending to Be Muslim Students

rcabbasi:

When the New York Police Department was doing some spying on Muslim students outside the city (that’s a thing it does, we learned from the Associated Press on Monday), an apartment officers used to spy on Rutgers students got a visit from the FBI on a report that it was a terrorist cell itself. This is the kind of reporting that won the AP a Polk award Monday for its series on the NYPD spying on Muslims. Not only did the department go well outside its jurisdiction to “get a better handle on what was occurring at” Muslim Student Associations, as spokesman Paul Browne told the AP, it did so in a pretty Keystone Kops manner at times:

Police also were interested in the Muslim student group at Rutgers, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In 2009, undercover NYPD officers had a safe house in an apartment not far from campus. The operation was blown when the building superintendent stumbled upon the safe house and, thinking it was some sort of a terrorist cell, called the police emerency dispatcher.

The FBI responded and determined that monitoring Rutgers students was one of the operation’s objectives, current and former federal officials said.

This is too good.

NYPD Officers Shoot and Kill Three Black Men in One Week

Ramarley Graham, 18, was shot and killed by a NYPD officer in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon after running into his home as undercover officers pursued him. He’s the third person the NYPD have killed in a week. According to the police spokesperson, he was unarmed.

Paul J. Browne, the New York Police Department’s chief spokesman, said there was “no evidence that he was armed” when the officer, a member of a narcotics unit, shot him once in the upper left chest, the New York Times reports.

The Graham shooting is the third time in a week that a member of the NYPD had killed a suspect. On Jan. 26, an off-duty police lieutenant shot a 22-year-old carjacking suspect in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn. And on Sunday, an off-duty detective shot a 17-year-old in Bushwick, Brooklyn, during a mugging, authorities said.

In Graham’s case, police found a small bag of marijuana in the toilet at the home he entered after the pursuit, the NY Times reports. “It’s likely the story will thicken and the NYPD will argue the cop acted in self defense, but right now it looks like the cops killed a kid trying to get rid of a little pot,” said Seth Freed Wessler, Colorlines.com’s investigation reporter.

“Despite directives from the NYPD Commissioner to stop arresting people for simple possession of marijuana, the NYPD actually conducted more marijuana arrests in 2011 than in the previous year,” Wessler said.

In New York City, marijuana arrests strike people of color the hardest. Last year the NYPD made a near-record number of low-level marijuana arrests, making 2011 the second-most prolific period for marijuana arrests in NYC history. Close to 87 percent of those arrested for marijuana were black or Latino, while only 10 percent were white.

“The daily practice of harassing black and Latino kids with stop and frisk policing and then arresting them for simple possession of pot would be bad enough even if it did not lead to shootings. In this case in the Bronx, it looks like the day-to-day drug war left this 18-year-old kid dead,” Wessler said.

It reminds me of the “bike to work” movement. That is also portrayed as white, but in my city more than half of the people on bike are not white. I was once talking to a white activist who was photographing “bike commuters” and had only pictures of white people with the occasional “black professional” I asked her why she didn’t photograph the delivery people, construction workers etc. … ie. the black and Hispanic and Asian people… and she mumbled something about trying to “improve the image of biking” then admitted that she didn’t really see them as part of the “green movement” since they “probably have no choice” –

I was so mad I wanted to quit working on the project she and I were collaborating on.

So, in the same way when people in a poor neighborhood grow food in their yards … it’s just being poor– but when white people do it they are saving the earth or something.

i’m just not going to read tumblr any more, forever. or something.

because this whole “ri made a new song w/chris brown she’s getting back together with him, fuck her next time he beats her” crap is really fucking pissing me off.

and in many ways, the discourse supporting ri is just as irritating—“how do you know she’s back together with him do you have pictures???” thing?? yeah. UGH.

this whole narrative that people have tried to imposed on ri since the public found out she was in an abusive situation is infuriating. whatever her choices are—she is living one very basic truth of all fucking survivors. it’s our right as human beings to define our own experience in our own ways. and it’s our right as human beings to make our own choices and trust our own instincts. and it’s our right as human beings to do all that without the fear of getting our ass kicked by our partner/families and it’s our right to do that while being accountable to *OURSELVES* first. Or: it’s our right to not take the needs of every damn body else in the world into consideration. as human beings—we have the right to *autonomy*.

this is the very basic fucking truth of all human beings. and so the point is not “FUCK HER NEXT TIME HE BEATS HER” and it’s not even “THERE’S NO PROOF SHE’S BACK WITH HIM”—

the point is—how do ***WE AS A COMMUNITY/CULTURE/SOCIETY*** MAKE SURE RI IS ALLOWED TO CLAIM HER FULL HUMAN AUTONOMY IN THE WAY SHE SEES FIT????

In other words: IT’S NOT HER JOB TO MAKE SURE HE DOESN’T BEAT HER.
It’s ***OUR*** (society, community, culture, etc) job to make sure violence is no longer an acceptable part of our culture in any way shape or form and to find ways to 1. stop violence from happening and 2. make sure there are accountability measures in place when it does.

where are all the discusions on what we and our communities are going to do to end violence in all it’s forms?

what ri does is not the point. what chris does, even, is not the point.

the point is—what are WE going to do?

Bolded points for emphasis.

Also, in my work at a matrimonial/family law firm, I’ve seen many DV cases in which the survivor ends up settling the claim and getting back together with the abuser. They sent us photographic evidence of the abuse.  It was real and graphic.

While I am not a survivor of abuse (keep that in mind and take my opinions as you will), but I’m speculating that since these legal battles can get REALLY messy, sometimes survivors just want it to “all go away” and it just appears easier to recant/settle than deal with the shitstorm.  Many of my friends (mostly cis men) have been really quick to judge Rihanna for working with Chris Brown again (to reiterate the point above, there’s also no proof that they’re back together so everyone should just knock it off).

Regardless of what is going on (or not going on) between them is none of our business, and more accountability should also be put on the community to educate people on and eradicate violence to the best of our abilities.

Mike Huckabee joined the fight against President Obama’s mandate saying, “we’re all Catholic now.” Really?! You know who is not all Catholic now? ALL CATHOLICS NOW. 98% of Catholic women say they’ve used birth control and the other two percent are always the ones trying to get a church to start a softball team. REALLY!?

Also anyone who has not seen The Black Power Mixtape totally should.
