I've just graduated from Ryerson's Radio and Television Arts school, acclaimed as one of Canada's best broadcasting programs. After several years in RTA my interests and skills began dragging me towards documentary, despite my capitalist side's better judgment. I am currently learning under the tutelage of Nick Hector CCE, one of Canada's most acclaimed editors, and hope to edit my own commercial documentaries before too long. What Is Going On With This Helicopter? [Image Cache]

Those are not flares or artificial lighting or a Photoshop job. And it’s not a teleporting sequence from a sci-fi movie either. It’s the Kopps-Etchells Effect. This is how it happens, according to Command Sergeant Major Jeff Mellinger: More »

Gyroscopes the Size of Sand Will Track You Anywhere (Even Underground) [Navigation]

The Israeli Department of Defense has cooked up the worlds smallest gyroscope—powered by lasers and as small as a single grain of sand. The new gyros are sensitive enough to track your position and movements anywhere—no GPS required. More »

Real Wood Paneling Turns iPhone 4 Into Lusty 70s Electronics

While I’m still waiting for an inexpensive wood case replacement for the iPhone 4, there’s a solution for a mere $25: Karvt’s iPhone 4 skins crafted in real wood. I can’t decide between chocolate walnut or natural cherry.

"What Else Could We Squeeze Into This Suitcase? A Picnic Table?"

Picnic table suitcase. It’s the only thing I need for this summer. Well that, and an actual summer. It’s tough living in England, land of the 11-month winter.

This is a Gun

This cube may look like hell’s version of Jenga, but it’s actually an elaborate, 125-piece puzzle. The solution? A single-shot 45-caliber muzzle-loading pistol called the Intimidator. No, seriously. See for yourself.

Astonishing - 15,000 small fireworks shot off together.  It looks like some kind of futuristic super weapon.

PowerPad Uses Used Shower Water to Help Your Water Heater Stay Efficient

The Power Pad is a contraption that you stand on while you shower, recycling hot water to lower the energy usage of your water heater. Clever!

By running the hot water over cold water that’s pumped through the pad, it pre-heats water your heater has yet to warm up. With a warmer starting temperature, that water then takes less energy to heat up, saving you money. Manufactured by Haier in China, the Power Pad is set to go on sale there for about $600. If it works well, it will presumably come to the States, too.

If Tron Were Made In the 1930s

“Though Tron: Legacy is only six months away, the movie’s iconic light cycles seem as remotely futuristic today as they did in 1982. But this custom Henderson motorcycle, built in 1936, is basically Art Deco Tron on Earth.

The four-cylinder bike was custom built by O. Ray Courtney in 1936, adapted from a 1930 K.J Henderson, and was recently restored by New Yorker Frank Westfall.”

Open URLs in Safari Tabs Launches Multiple Links From Any Spot in OS X

“Mac OS X/Safari only: Opening multiple tabs from anywhere except the browser is painful. You click, Safari pops up, head back and repeat. John Gruber has coded a workflow you can install to open multiple URLs with a Control-Click.

The script, courtesy of Gruber’s blog Daring Fireball, only installs on Mac OS X running Snow Leopard (10.6), and can only open tabs in Safari. That said, if you’re all-in on your Mac, gaining the ability to launch all the links in any area you select—emails, documents, or PDFs included—without having to make return trips could easily become a daily time saver.

The script is a free download, and the source code, and instructions for building one yourself for Leopard (10.5) are included at the post.”

The Cleverest Mugs For the Cheapest Booze

“When you’re serving up drinks in the Vino Mug and the Bottoms Up Beer Glass, your guests will be so distracted by the creative flair that they won’t even notice they’re drinking up your bathtub booze.

The Vino Mug is available here, and the Bottoms Up Beer Glass here, both for $18. Well worth it as a conversation-starter, in terms of both design and contents. “

Fake Melted Food an Effective and Sociopathic Way to Save Your Seat

“The typical seat-saving trick at the movies is leaving behind a jacket or bag. But what if you don’t have a jacket? It’s summer! You might not even be wearing clothes! Try one of these devious faux melted treats instead.

The pranksters at Jeremy’s Place, fine purveyors of fake food items since 1992, have figured out that their melted models can double as a perfect means of avoiding any sort of real world confrontation. Just hope your seat doesn’t snap back upright in the middle of the ruse—then you’ll lose your seat and be outed as someone crazy enough to carry around plastic food replicas.”

Aluminum Rolls Uncoil For An Artistic Metallic Labyrinth

“Chikara Ohno’s ‘Rolls’ twists and turns through the air like giant silvery ribbons, using giant coils of aluminum siding as floor-to-ceiling decor and as chic glass topped tables. I hope the edges aren’t sharp.”

All timezones, 1 hand.

“This world clock, called ‘The Bent Hands’, keeps you on time with cities and zones you didn’t even know existed. Like Dhaka. Or Eastern Canada. It works with a bent, spiraling hand showing each zone’s time at the connected points.”

Hide Your iPhone 4 In A Little Black Book

“The Little Black Book iPhone 4 case has every little bit of that romantic, old-fashioned feel that you might adore about a Moleskine notebook. But at the same time, it’ll keep your iPhone 4 safe and somewhat disguised.”

Repair Your iPhone Screen on the Cheap

“Don’t shell out a pile of cash to get your iPhone screen repaired. Make’s detailed guide will help you replace the screen on your iPhone 3G on the cheap and with little fuss.

Earlier this year we shared how a 10 year old boy repaired his dad’s iPhone for $22. If you read over the instructions there and wished for a more text-heavy and detailed guide on what screw goes where and what cable attaches back to what, Make magazine has just the guide you’re looking for.”
