This was at Challenger Harbour. Apparently they had the best fish&chips in Australia. We had it twice, on two different days. Tasted the same as any other fish&chips though.

Were you ever afraid to take pictures of a stranger? I would love to get close enough to take good pictures of interesting people I pass on the street but I just can't muster up the courage to ask them. Advice?

I didnt have the confidence too initially. And my love for wide angle lenses made it more difficult for me as it meant that i had to go closer.

There are some ways like shooting from the hip, or doing a ninja turn of your head to snap your subject in a split-second. But here’s my advice.

Do not dive in and dive out. Getting up close hastily, shooting hastily, and getting out of trouble hastily just makes you so obvious that your subject can feel your every action without even looking at you.

When you’ve got an idea of what you wanna photograph or like when your right subject has showed up, get into the ‘zone’ with him/her. Just casually be around them, like you GENUINELY want to be there. Just act like you are minding your own business, doing your own thing, but observe them from time to time. No rash actions. When you feel comfortable about it, just raise your camera and take a photograph of them like you’ve got all the time in the world. By the time you’ve left, they wouldn’t even know you existed.

But of course, if you want a full frontal posed portrait of them, you’ve gotta ask most of the time.

Hey! Great photos! Holy cow! I just got an M8.. I was wondering how many batteries you own, and whether you use only the official batteries or not.

    Hey man!

Hope you’re enjoying your Leica M8! I owned 2 batteries. An original one and a 3rd party one.

From experience i feel that the original ones last longer. Another important point to note is that, the 3rd party batteries rarely give an accurate reading on the battery meter. Meaning, you might actually think it is full or flat, when it is actually not.

    Hope this helps. Cheers!

Your photos are amazing. What are some of your top tips for someone looking to improve their photos?

    Thank you saudade!

There are many tips on PHOTOGRAPHY from different people and places and if you keep asking, you can compile them into a dictionary or atlas haha.

But here’s just one from me. You dont have to be technically skilled. You dont have to own a fancy bling bling camera. You dont have to have so called ‘talent’.

All you need, is just to know if your photographs were straight from the heart. What i’m saying is. Sometimes people go out everyday, non-stop, just to take photographs. They are just hungry for THAT fabulous picture. Just like fishing, where you go everyday everyweek just hoping you would catch something. But then a day would come when you realize that you had been just photographing for the sake of it. It didnt matter if you had the mood, if you had an idea, you were just dragging yourself or your camera out to ‘improve your photography’.

I think one should pick up a camera, leave their house to photograph, only when they feel like it. It doesnt matter if the photographs come out brilliant. But at least you know you experienced joy in making them and that it was all honest photography, and not trying your best regularly to ‘improve’ your photography.

This way, i assure that you would gain satisfaction from your photographs, be it technically or visually brilliant or not. Isn’t that the most important thing? =) And who knows, your photographs WOULD improve overtime!

    Hey Ryan,
Could you teach me basics of film photography?
I mean like developing and all the basics what to buy etc etc.
It would really help as i want to start it and i live in Malaysia i don't know if that would help you in my question but yeah.

    Hey there!

I’ve got no experience in processing color negatives or slides. I do only know how to process black and white negatives! There are many videos on youtubes or picture articles on the web where they show you a step by step guide!

Let me link you one: here.

    Good luck!

  • March 04, 04:46 AM

Wow your photographs are amazing I wish to to photograph like you but sadly i fail. I hope to see your work more often and to admire and learn. Thank you

You never fail! Just haven’t done it yet! I never once did any formal training. Just kept shooting non-stop for years. Over periods of time when you look back, you actually find progress in many areas! Keep shooting!

    Fremantle

I’m finally back home in Singapore. I had an immensely good time with Bryan and Victoria over the last 5 days in Australia. Going to places around Perth and Fremantle, brought back many memories for me.

Soundwave Festival 2010 was a blast. Got to meet the people behind the music and voices in songs that i’ve been listening to for days, months or years. EXCEPT Taking Back Sunday. Out of all bands NOT to sign, it just had to be my favourite band. WHY?!

    Perth

    Greetings from Perth, Down Under.

Me, Bryan and Victoria bumped into Ash at the airport and we had a quick exploration tour around the Wellington St and Murray St area. Temperatures here are some what similar to Singapore at this time of the year. Just MORE windy, LESS humid and ALOT cooler in the night!

    Heading down to Fremantle tomorrow.

I know i’ve said this before. But, I might be a photographer, but i rarely get photographs of myself and i’m usually quite bummed about this. Especially in this case, where you explore the world with your friends and you document the moments for them. But, who documents ..you?  Thank you Bryan for taking this photograph.

    Stupid

I had so much fun going around a night carnival with my camera, photographing people. BUT OH NO! SOMEONE had to accidently delete all photographs from that night. Thats me.

I went back there today just to redeem myself.

But this time, it didn’t feel genuine for me anymore. Shame.

really cool photos man :). just want to ask what kind of films you are using.
I just started film photography and it would really help me big time :D

film is awesome! once you pop a roll you cant seem to resist it. It’s just great to know that everything that happened was through nature and chemistry.

I use mostly Fuji’s Superia for my color negatives and Fuji’s Neopan or Kodak’s Tri-X for my black&white negatives.

You can look through the film photographs within my page here:
