i’m hard at work on a new album in new york city. i’ve got people from london, chicago, saint louis, new york and (hopefully!) atlanta contributing and everyone has really come through so far. the songs all really hang together despite the fact that i think i’ve pulled in different vibes. should see a release first quarter of 2012. shoutout to everyone who’s held me down the past few years; saint louis crew you are sorely missed.

<3 neonwaves: NASH SMITH & GANGES — Light [Chicago] (June Tour, 2011) I guess today will be Blacksburg Band Update Day. Nash Smith & Ganges, another great band out of Blacksburg, Virginia, shot me an email a couple of days ago filling me in on a set of new recordings they’ve posted to their Bandcamp. The eight songs, three of which are currently unreleased, were recorded live via a handheld recording device throughout the duration of the tour they just wrapped up, meant to be ‘more of an audience POV document of the tour - quasi bootleg style.’ The recording method gives the tracks a certain organic, gritty feel that translates well to the moods of the music. Having gotten the opportunity to see Nash Smith play a couple of times now, I’m really glad that others who may not live in the Blacksburg area or who have not seen them on tour will be able to get an idea of the Nash Smith & Ganges live experience! The band members also have plans to work on some side projects for the rest of the summer, so definitely keep an eye out for that. His Big Cat EP is filled with a variety of pop inspired gems. Going from a slow soul sampled R&B piece to a full on dance track makes this EP pretty unpredictable. You Gave 2 Me consists of an array of bell and chime sounds alongside a driving rhythym and repetative vocal sample, its the most uplifting track on the release. It’s very different from my older material. I intended to do something outside of the realm of Chillwave, because I never intended on doing that all the time. I got really inspired by Jaded Hipster Choir and Joe Hisaishi, and wanted to make something cinematic. I didn’t have to wait too long, since today Février released his next EP called Winter Sessions. On the first day of spring. Connor explains the EP as a collection of wintry demos that wouldn’t fit anywhere else, wrapped up into a mini-EP. With its 12 minutes in length it certainly is mini, but it’s a perfectly brief conclusion to the past season. The songs on Winter Sessions are overall more ambient than those on Empress, with lovely textures and sounds, and brilliant use of samples (as you can hear in the track above). So excited for this label! these two are the best. <3 <3 verbreverb: Yo, HUGE announcement! Tyler of Flashlight Tag and I are starting a free digital release label called Absent Fever. The first four artists on the label are the brilliant KYNAN, Guerre, Galapagos, and Wonder Bear; all of whom are creating incredible innovative sounds. Aside for exposing emerging young talent via free music Absent Fever’s goal is to also incorporate visual based mixed media art in order to further the connection between music and visuals. Our first release is KYNAN’s monthly album, Birthday Blues, a super eclectic album which you can/should at our bandcamp. Aside from releasing music and working on various other multi-media projects, we’ll be continuously making podcasts similar to this one that we’ll post on the Absent Fever site just like this one which you can download here.
