Only seems like yesterday but it was such an honour to be part of the team that won a sidewinder people’s choice award for best Internet radio station. Such a shame that MajorFM.com stopped broadcasting cos it would have been huge now! The way we were streaming video and music was such an innovation back then. #throwback #sidewinder #peopleschoice #2003 #deucemagazine #innovation #youngKarnak
In an era of over the top dance music and rockstar DJ’s, R1 Ryders take us away from the festival and deep into the underground on an EP that both pays homage to its roots in UK rave and paves the way for futuristic bassline innovation. Riding the line between house and UK funky, their signature “funkitek” sound facilitates four thunderous, percussive monsters that will shake the foundation and rattle your brain.
For fans of Sinden, Toddla T, Roska.

Thank you to Mixmag for reviewing my latest release CRT002. “Seriously slick dancefloor bangers
Karnak - the dangerously talented DJ/producer behind R1 Ryders - has been honing his “funkitek” style for a minute now, and each release shows his individuality just a bit more. These three tracks are the best yet, each with its own style. ‘Speed Bump’ is like a razor-edged take on speed garage; ‘Low Tread’ is retro rave retooled with 21st century tech; ‘UK Sound’ is a joyously galloping bit of UK funky.
8/10”
Music To Be Played At High Volume.
R1 Ryders have been purveyors of a raw and edgy style of electronic dance music that they’ve labeled Funkitek since 2006 and have consistently produced some of the most bass-centric tracks to come out of London’s underground club scene. Consisting of producer Karnak and MC Skeelo the duo have put their own spin on dance music and have produced a string of raw and unpretentious offerings such as ‘Rubberband’, ‘Low Tread’ and ‘Hydraulic’ which have been played by DJ’s across the board like Mary Anne Hobbs, Toddla T, EZ, Mistajam, B.Traits, Sinden and Benji B.
A hybrid of House and Jungle the Funkitek sound is both high octane and energetic and seeing the pair perform in a club is the best way to experience their energetic strain of electronic music. Having worked together for over six years there’s a distinct synergy in their live performances and they’ve entertained international crowds and airwaves from the UK to Norway and beyond. Not being strangers to the clubbing circuit they’ve shared line-ups with artists such as Breakage, Silkie, Mosca, Kode 9, Joker, Roska, Scratcha, Ben UFO, Rustie and L-Vis 1990 amongst others.
Growing up in London as avid music collectors they cite London’s Jungle and Garage scenes as key influences on their sound and you can hear the diverse musicality of those genres in R1 Ryders productions. With a production career that originally started in 2003, Karnak later went on to meet Skeelo through pirate radio and the pair struck up a fruitful working relationship. Skeelo’s hosting duties compliment Karnak’s rapid mixing style which usually consists of plenty unreleased gems from them and it’s no surprise that the likes of La Roux, Major Lazer and The Count & Sinden have enlisted them for remix duties.
2012 saw R1 Ryders launch their new label Current with which they aim to nurture upcoming talent and spread their sound even further. In 2013 you can expect to see them become even more prominent in the electronic music scene as their Funkitek sound continues to push sound systems across the globe to their limit.
