Your Mount Laurel martial artist and education activist, Peter Liciaga brings you another episode of his Iron Sharpens Iron 24/7 podcast. A podcast born out of my desire to meet and engage with other men to discuss life ups and downs; and to challenge each other to strive for personal and spiritual growth as they become men of God.
In this week’s episode Peter and his friend Tony Vendetti share what they learned at TEAM, a men’s group that meets every Friday morning at 5:45am in Mount Laurel New Jersey at Fellowship Community Church.
They discuss the Discipline of Marriage and how the discipline that married men are called to commit to in marriage is not exclusive to married men. That the call for men to be “disciplined” men of God is a call to ALL men; married or single!
Steps for Marital Happiness from two perspectives:
And, if you fail, repeat steps 1 thru 3!
And if you fail, revisit steps 1 thru 3!

In this episode Peter’s discuss the value of knowing Why You Do What You Do as martial arts educators.
As advanced marital artist and professionals, it is so important that we know why we do what we do?
What is your motivating factor?
What do we reflect on when we are confronted with hard times and the many challenges that will, not may, but will come our way?
You know, it’s never a question of what are you going to do “if” you are confronted with a challenge? But, rather, it’s a question of what are you going to do “when” you are confronted with a challenge?
We would be fooling ourselves if we think just because we love what we do that we won’t be confronted with challenges; challenges that will bring us to the brink of, dare I say it, giving up!
Hey we’ve all been there. And guess what? We have all given up on something.
So, what will be your weapon as you move forward knowing that you will be confronted with challenges?
Well, my fellow black belt champion, it’s when you get to those moments in your life that you must remember why you are doing what you are doing. What is your motivating factor?
Is it because you want to make a lot of money? Is it because you have a lot of fun? Or is it because you want to help shape the lives of others?
Why do you do what you do?
Whatever the reasons, you need to know what your passion is and be able to communicate that passion to your students, their families, fellow instructors and to the senior instructors of your school.
My personal passion as an martial arts educator is to make a powerful and positive impact in people’s lives; to motivate them and to encourage them to be dedicated to their own personal growth; to help them uncover their gifts and talents and to encourage them to cultivate their own energy for excellence; to remind them that their bright and exciting future is only limited by their ability to use their imagination, their creativity and their willingness to work hard.
The goal of a martial arts educator is to assist the students in the process of developing the confidence and the right character required to live an exciting and successful life; and making a significant difference in the lives of others through martial arts training.
Here are a couple of suggestions:
1. Watch those around you and learn from them.
If people are working hard but not getting ahead, don’t dismiss them as role models. They have a lot to teach you, both about the realities of life and the values that can lead to a better life. If you can’t find a role model in your family, find one in your community. They are there if you look.
2. Accept your parents for what they are.
I was fortunate to have a mother who worked hard and set a good example. She wasn’t perfect, but she did the best that she could. I have since made peace with her and took the lessons I needed to motivate me to excel beyond my wildest dreams.
3. Understand the power of Your Name.
What does your name mean to you? Listen to the names other people call you. Decide on what you would like your name to be. When you choose a name, you are choosing your destiny. My mother choose Peter Simon Liciaga, after the apostle Peter. I like the idea that my name means, “rock”.
4. Never underestimate the power of a name.
Nick names, cute phrases and puns will get you somewhere; however they won’t get you everywhere. The end must be reflected in the beginning. Seek to understand and cultivate the ability to “brand” you and your name.
5. Listen and accept positive reinforcement.
Don’t listen to negative. There are those that will say you “can’t”. Ask them why not. You’ll find that more often than not the reason is “because no one else had done it.” That’s not a dead end; that’s a challenge. Don’t let negative people drag you down.
6. Great ventures start with small ideas.
Don’t be afraid to experiment. Keep your eyes open, your mind working and your body ready to work. You don’t have to hit a homerun the first time, but you’ll never hit a home run if you don’t learn to swing…and then swing.
Here’s something my coach, Tom Callos, said about me just the other day on The 100 site.
“One of the reasons Peter Liciaga hits a lot of home runs, is he SWINGS THE BAT. ‘There are men in the ranks who will stay in the ranks because they lack the ability to get things done.’ Peter does not lack the ability to get things done –and I relish it when I can say the same thing about you —-and better yet, about the people who work with you. Thanks Peter!”
Thank you Tom.
7. Invest Today for Tomorrow.
Enjoy life today, however, always think about tomorrow so you can also enjoy life tomorrow. Spend your resources wisely and be a great steward.
8. There are always people who will help you.
Just keep looking until you find them. Don’t give up; keep asking for help. That’s not begging, that’s investing in your future. There are a lot of good people in the world. Don’t let anyone tell you different.
