Took some time off comics to do a little Illustration work.
First up I was asked to design a sidekick for Austin Book's new sidekick store down the street.
Ended up with this.
They liked it enough to make it into an awesome window display for their big labor day sale.
Here's Brandon opening the doors for the big sale. (super sneaky video)Austin Books Labor Day Sale from Paul Maybury on Vimeo.
I couldn't help but snag some comics.
Not included in the photo were three issues of Solo and the first all in one Ranma 1/2.
After that was wrapped up I did an illustration for a film festival that Criterion was working on. I did this fake movie poster for Roman Polanski's Repulsion.
Design work and colors by Eric Skillman over at Criterion.
I later on decided to try my hand at coloring it just for fun. Here's my version.
Also, since I'm sure some of you assume I must have quit comics after Aqua Leung, it's not so!
In fact I have books lined up for almost 2 years!
All that aside, I've been semi secretly putting together a VERY elaborate pitch for the Maxy J. Millionaire graphic novel. It's the most work I've ever put into getting something off the ground and I hope it pays off.
Any ways, here's a sneak peek at one of the new pages.
And just incase you have a really stupid local comic book store that isn't already ordering Strange Tales issue 2, here's the diamond ordering code. SEP10 0673
I wrote and drew a Spider-Man story for it. I even hand lettered it!
Little more info over at the Beat...where I swiped this image url from, because I'm a bad man.
http://www.comicsbeat.com/2010/08/18/jaime-hernandez-cover-for-strange-tales-2/
Also, this is weird.
Lastly, coloring assistant wanted!
Unfortunately Olli had to spread his wings and fly. This means I need a new coloring assistant to help out and learn the ways of the Jedi. I'm looking for someone local, unless you're super amazing and dependable. But if that's the case you probably don't need to learn anything from me.
I tried to give the position to Chloe Bella Catsburg, but she isn't working out.

Con recap and life
Well, SDCC was a lot of fun. Got to catch up with a bunch of people I hadn't seen in a few years. It also allowed me to comfortably say that I'm now working on two books that will be coming out probably the end of the year and early next year. My other big news is that I did some work for Marvel Strange Tales. More specifically a Spiderman story written, drawn colored and hand lettered by yours truly.
Here's and interview about it with editor Jody LeHeup.
http://marvel.com/news/comicstories.13299.sdcc_2010~colon~_strange_tales_ii
The convention seemed to be a little less...crowded then I remembered it being 6 years ago. I think people are being a bit whiney about the crowds and the movies. I mean, if I didn't want to see that stuff I simply walked around it and got my comics on. I keep a tiny sketchbook and I usually get a few doodle from artists I admire. This year I snagged a Sergio Aragones, Jaime Hernandez and a Felipe Smith.
I also blew all my money on French comics. Picked up a bunch of Chris Blain books that aren't translated here. And all the Blutch my bag could carry.
Speaking of the crowds, I did sneak a video of other people creating a massive road block watching a giant video.SDCC Road Blockage from Paul Maybury on Vimeo.
Annd here's some pics from the trip. Neither Cassandra or I are photo wizards. Actually, we possess the power to take blurry pictures, that's our only spell.
This was our hotel lobby right next to the con. NOT too shabby.
Our fancy pants hotel view.
This was actually the pro line. Now, not to sound snobby, but I kind of know a lot of creators, and the fact that I only saw maybe two professionals that I know in this line leads me to believe there were an awful lot of bloggers and the like in that line. And that's not a bad thing, but I wish there were some way to tell who makes comics at this point and who's media.
MANOMAN did I miss Austin food prices while we were there. For two burgers we could have bought two weeks worth of groceries in Austin at HEB. We noticed the special Comic Con menu, which roughly translated into have some extra expensive food, suuuuuuckeeeeers!
I kept seeing this little white people floating in the air the whole show. I couldn't figure out what it was about, but I finally saw that they're actually little bubble cut outs, which was actually kind of rad.
Cassandra was probably smarter than me and spent about 1/3rd of her time at the show. Here's a rare glimpse of her on the con floor.
We got invited to the Oni party on Friday, and it was pretty nice. We took advantage of the open bar and the free finger food. I mean, we're artists, we have no shame, right?
Here's a terrible picture of the CBLDF party. Paul Pope was the DJ, and man, I'm glad that guy draws comics. Yeah, I said it. (I still love the guy) (does get points for rockin' some Gangstarr)
Here are some new prints that will be available soonish. Just working out some more details. But there's 50 of these suckers, and they're totally awesome and made by the fine folks at Nakatomi.
http://www.nakatomiinc.com/vaults/vault.php?v=invitational
So lastly, big thanks to Johnny Granado over at 5 Color Cowboy for putting us up for the show. You're a King!
So I picked up a lot of books at that show. And conveniently I was asked by Robot 6 to talk about what I'm currently reading, so check it out.
http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2010/08/what-are-you-reading-83/
If you pick up Fluorescent Black from Heavy Metal you get to have a giant shiny version of this in the back. It's a damn purty book.
Right before I ran off to San Diego, I did a couple of commissions.
If you follow Project Rooftop, so might have seen the JLA all start jam piece that they're doing. I contributed a Wonder Woman to it.
http://www.tencentticker.com/projectrooftop/2010/07/14/jla-invitational-paul-mayburys-wonder-woman/
I was asked a while ago to talk about the first characters I created for Snap Judgement. Here's a link to the audio from it which has some pictures of my early early EARLY work. I'm a few stories in.
http://snapjudgment.org/superheroes-comic-book-artists-origins-slideshow
And I'll leave you with this amazing video. -

Fuuuuusandiegoooooock
Yeah, SDCC is almost here, and I'm not sure if I'm going to finish all my work before I get there.
Thanks to all the people that purchased my sketchbook off etsy. I still have more!
http://www.etsy.com/listing/51133267/art-of-paul-maybury-2010?ref=cat1_gallery_8
Also, needed new business cards since I switched my website over to http://paulmaybury.com (bookmark it!)
Finished a couple commissions laying around.
I haven't messed with watercolors much, so I think it came out ok.
Ah, more Aqua. It's really kind of nice how many people come up to me at cons and tell me they enjoyed the book. I guess in my tiny world I'm just sort of amazed that people other than my friends have read it.
Also, I can't wait for the English version of this book. I caaaaan't waaaaait!
Well, I'll leave this post with Muzz playing bass. Points to the nerds that remember him. -

Live art tonight at Club Deville
Hey, sort of last second but I'll be doing live art tonight at Club Deville. It starts at 8pm and goes til 2am.
I really have no supplies so I'll be winging it with a deluxe box of crayons, because that's how I get down.
So, I hate to leave you without art in an entry, so here's a little something from some project I may or may not be working on.
Here's some art from a commission I did a little while ago.
And lastly here's another thing that I'm doing, maybe. And it may be a collaboration with some guys who used to do a really awesome book about Pirates, I mean, I don't know.
Also, here's some of the things I've been wasting my time at admiring on youtube. -
June 12, 01:20 PM
Home for a little while
Ok, Heroes as always was a lot of fun. Here's my yearly haul.
Some cool original art from my pals Chris Schweizer, Nathan Fox and Ming Doyle.
I had the pleasure of hanging out next to my buddies Jim Mahfood, Tom Scioli, Ed Piskor, Jim Rugg the Atomic Robo team Ad House, Scott Morse and the always awesome Nathan Fox. I'm pretty sure we were the coolest block of tables at the con.
Had some cool dinners after the show. Got to hang out with Mahfood, Khary Randolph, Guy Davis, Jason Horn quite a bit. Had this crazy last night dinner with Heidi Macdonald, Ben Templesmith, Ben McCool, Ming Doyle, Jill Thompson and a bunch of other insanely talented people at a rocking cajun restaurant. A giant storm rolled through as we were eating close to outside and it was really beautiful. It doesn't rain much in Texas, so it was nice.
I did some fun sketches at the show. Apparently the guy that commissioned this one off me is on 30 Rock. I had no idea until later since I've never watched the show. I did accidentally steal his comic that he gave me for ref. Whoops!
I think this person is going to send me a nicer scan of this, but I snapped a pic anyways because I liked it.
Here's another Mohawk Storm I did for by buddy Ron Salas who I finally got to meet in person after knowing him online for yeeeears.
Mahfood snapped a picture of me working on it.
Heroes after party was fun and super duper hot. I had to keep stepping outside, I don't think comic book stores are meant to house that many people.
See you next year, Charlotte!
Here's a Barbarella I drew for the show. First thing I sold too. -
May 30, 08:18 PM
See you in Charlotte June 4-7
So I'll be at table AA-540 in Indie Island. I'll have copies of my con sketchbook that was available earlier at Staple in March.
For those of you that couldn't make it or can't make it to Charlotte I set up an Etsy store. http://www.etsy.com/shop/paulmay
Also, I have a new website that will replace deliciousbrains. Long live paulmaybury.com! I'm going to let the deliciousbrains name run down and then that's it, no more forwarding, so please bookmark the new site.
This is what happens when I give something to Olli color and then I mess with it. Our combined coloring powers are unstoppable.
My buddy Mark Englert had me draw this Lost commission for his wife. I've never watched Lost, but apparently I did an ok job.
Here's a new Kaneda commission. I know, I've drawn him before so I tried to switch this one up a bit and make it into a little scene. -
May 06, 10:44 AM
CONVENTIONS!
Apparently I'm not going to hide in my cave this year.
In June I'll be at Heroes in NC. I'll be somewhere in Indie Island sitting next to some excellent people I'm sure. Almost MORE importantly, I'll be there the evening before the con. This evening happens to be the day I turn a year older. So, if you want to buy me a drink, I won't stop you.
In JULY, I'll be attending San Diego Comic Con for the first time since 2004. I won't have a table, I'll just be floating around.
On that note, I'm still taking commissions to ease the pain of the flight, so if you would like one drop me a line. paul.maybury@gmail.com
Here's a couple recent commissions I just wrapped up.
Oh, and lastly, I signed up at tumblr, so if any one wants to follow me there as well, feel free. paulmaybury.tumblr.com/ -

Spera and more
First, thanks to comicsreporter and Robot 6 for featuring Spera, a really cool online anthology that I got asked to do a pinup for. I enjoy spreading the love when I can.
http://www.spera-comic.com/
So I drew this a while back for my Dad's birthday. It's a cover for a short story he wrote.
Read it here. pmboston.blogspot.com/
I did this as a commission. I love this costume for Storm.
So normally I work on pitches and I never show all the crap that I drew. Today I break down a sneak one in here. There's no words so I don't see the harm.
Last image here. I was asked to talk about characters I made up when I was a kid for an interview that has yet to go up. Any ways, I felt inspired so I redrew the character. SO inspired that I ended up writing an entire comic that I fantasize about drawing now.
OH, I posted a new page of Party Bear over here. www.act-i-vate.com/34-1-59.comic
You should read through some of the last few pages if you haven't. Keep your eyes peeled because I'm going to be updating it for about a month weekly.
Lastly, I did a really fun interview for ACC's paper, The Accent. Odin was one of the most prepared interviewers I've ever dealt with, and i guess I was one of his first. If I knew how to hook him up with Newsarama or CBR I would.

Sorry for the slow updates. I have a waiting period usually for when I can post art since not all of it is just for kicks. There's a couple of really neat things I couldn't throw in this post already.
If you find that you can't live without my internet presence. I'm on twitter twitter.com/pmaybury -

STAPLE! 2010
First off, I didn't grab much at the show, but here are the totally awesome things I did manage to snag before the con ended.
I didn't have my own table this year, so my friends Chris Schweizer and Guy Davis let me crash their tables with Jason Horn.
Now before someone slaps me because that's an original BPRD page, I did draw this for Guy as a thanks.
I also did this for Chris, it's from the first installment of his Crogan series, which I can't stress enough how good it is.
Here's a random picture of everyone yappin' at the con, and features super intern, Ricky AKA J.U.N.G.L.E.C.A.T.
I got to do a couple of drawings for people. Mostly I just did small sketches in people's ashcans.
Here's the end result of that one.
Here's another one that by buddy Evan had me draw.
Also, also, new sketchbooks for sale.If anyone wants one, they're 10 bucks and come with a sketch on the cover. They have the BW versions of the Aliens story as well as Conan and some other shorts. Plus lots and lots of art. email me if you want one. paul.maybury@gmail.com
The end of the con ended in a brawl, as always.
Special thanks to Randy Lander, Kevin, Marianne and Evan. I stole tables and photos from these people. -
March 01, 03:33 PM
Graphic NYC and Live Art!
I was invited to share some of my influences over at Graphic NYC, go check it out
In other news, here's the info for the Staple after party. It says there that I'll be drawing, so maybe you can get a sweet deal on some live art. -
February 25, 09:15 PM
Holy Cannoli!
Wow, been busy lately. First off, got engaged last week, for some reason I didn't think that would side track me.. Here's the super awesome cake I had made for my then girlfriend that day. You can get cool cakes like this one by the the very talented Tiffany found over heeere.
I'm currently cooking up a 2010 ashcan book to bring to conventions. It will actually be printed somehow by next week in time for Staple con in Austin. Now I know this sounds weird, but I don't have a table there. Instead you can find me at Guy Davis' table. I'll be doing commissions at the show, and will have this year and last years con sketchbooks handy. If you want to pre order a commission from me and pick it up at the show drop me a line.
paul.maybury@gmail.com
I will also be attending Heroes in June, even though it's not up on the site yet.
Ok, so here's some art stuff.
I still need to color this, but here's a BW preview.
Here's the first page of a short story I've been working on. There's not much to it, so I figure there's no harm in showing it.
To be clear, I have no idea how to write in cursive anymore. I had to look it up on the internet one night as I wrote it. If your cursive rocks mine, and you want to be a buddy, feel free to write it then scan it in high rez for me. I can offer an internet high five.
I meant to post an update about this, but probably just twittered it. I hate twitter, but I accept that it's going to be around. I mostly use it to update my facebook at the same time. Any ways, here's my twitter if you want to follow it, and here's the issue of TMNT that my pinup appeared in.
Here's some penciled pages I swear I'm going to get to pretty darn soon. The bottom three are Party Bear, the top two are new Maxy.
And now I'm off to start another commission. -
January 30, 11:32 AM
Cyclops!
Somewhere in between penciling my life away, I took a moment to test out some new ink. I did a one our draw off on penciljack.com and this was the result. Mind you I colored it AFTER the time was up. I can only pencil and ink in one hour. I'm actually a pretty damn slow colorist. -
January 24, 12:17 AM
I've survived another year.
This means you guys have to look at more art by yours truly.
First up, here's something I did for longbox, "the itunes of comics" website. Maybe it will end up as a banner at some show.
This is for my friend Finch's company
And this is my friend Matty's character that I drew for the Zombie Bomb anthology from Terminal Press.
And lastly here's some comic pages I'm working on for the Next Issue project from Image Comics.
Yay! -
October 29, 03:43 PM
Aliens!
Hey, here's a Aliens story I did lettered by the awesome Steven Finch. This is strictly a fan comic.
Also, here's some stuff I've drawn as warm up/requests.
I'm going to do occasional journal type comics in this format. So look for more soon. I've written a couple more humorous shorts out. True stories of course.
A little bit before the Pekar head project happen, I coincidentally drew one. It wasn't included in the batch that got posted online, but you know, "Paul who" seems fitting on so many levels.
Also, here's the very first page of a project that is very special to me. If you know what the page is high fives!
Lastly, if you know anything about my musical tastes, you should know that I love Living Colour. I went and saw them on their tour for their new album at Emo's. I also took the day off of work early to catch a little live set at Waterloo Records. I stumbled across the performance on youtube and saw some jerk that looks a lot like me in the crowd wearing a hat. It's like Where's Pauldo?
As promised, I will be posting the unseen comic Anas and I originally did for Popgun. I just have to letter the last page. It's hand lettered, so cut me some slack!
PS
Here's a little bonus video of me inking the Kaneda that I almost forgot about. -
August 26, 10:01 PM
Fun with black and white!
Alright, so first up, here's the inks to a commission I'm working on. It's a full color one, so I'll probably post the colors later.
Here's a page from an Alien short story I'm doing much like the Conan that I just posted. It will be colored by Olli as well, so stay tuned.
I am always taking commissions, so if you want one drop me a line. -

Also, here's some comics that are mostly new.
I drew this Maxy story for my Heroes ashcan book (which I still have copies of for $10 each with a doodle on the cover)
I also retooled this story for the same book and drew a little bit more of it. Expect more whenever I can get back to it. -

Conan short
Hey guys, I'm going to be doing some sample pages of different properties purely as a fan. This is in no way an official story that will be published by Darkhorse. I'm doing these to sort of flex my artistic muscles and get some practice in.
Colors by the awesome Olli Hihnala (with some minor dickin'around by myself)
Here's some of the BW work in progress stuff I took a picture of. - July 16, 06:30 PM

Con wrap up!
Geez, where do I begin??
STAPLE! CON AUSTIN
Every year before the show Austin Books throws a fun pre con party at the store. creators and fans get together and drink beer, eat free snacks and talk comics.
I got to sit next to Comics legend Stan Sakai, and let me tell you it was quite a treat for me. Usagi Yojimbo is the only comic I've followed my entire life. Of course I didn't tell Stan this when I met him, but my inner nerd quietly raged on through out the con.
Check out this awesome Aqua Leung he drew for me. I drew him a little Usagi in a copy of Aqua Leung as well, but no picture.
ALSO, AMAZING DISCOVERY! While putting this post together I cam across a video of Stan drawing in my book!
Stan Sakai Drawing at STAPLE! in Austin, TX 3/7/2009
Uploaded by DGaston3245. - Arts and animation videos.
Here's an interview I did while I was tired and STARVING at the time.
Also, here's a video of the con where I pop up a number of times. It does a nice job of capturing the entire show.
Annnnnd, then there was the after party.
I did a fantastic job of not showing my face at this show.
Evan Bryce and I rocking the live art show.
I never got a good picture of the final, so here's the best unfinished picture I've found online.
So Staple! was a ton of fun, I got to chat with one of my favorite creators, met old and new friends and got a ton of great mini comics from up and coming creators!
Ok, in between this and the next show I stopped by Randy Lander's Rogues Gallery store and sketched for free comics day. I had just washed my iphone so no camera phone was handy for sketches. I did starwars, sonic, incredibles and some other fun stuff. It was insanely busy, but here's a calmer photo from the event.
During free comicbook day I picked up issue one of ninja turtles, and got so inspired I hit up a buddy of mine over there and started work on my very own Ninja Turtles pinup coming soon to an issue near you! I'll let you guy know when it comes out if you want to grab the issue. I took a lot of work in progress photos but here's one and then the final.
I've also been posting youtube clips and posts about my creative process and work space over on penciljack.
Here's one of the clips. I also recommend the creating a page post. Also, I would switch to viewing on a high quality for this one.
Ok, on to Heroes Con in Charlotte, my favorite show of the year.
Before I did the show I got my shit together and did some pre show art as well as some auction art in the form of a new Aqua Leung image.
I also recolored a projectrooftop Iron Man for a print. (sold one and gave away another, guess prints aren't so hot) I drew the Supergirl before I left but didn't get to coloring until I got home.
I also printed up some new mini comics/sketchbooks for the show(front and back cover on the left). I still have some left if anyone is interested. They're 10 bucks a pop with a little doodle on the cover.
Here's a photo someone took of a sketch I did on one of them.
I always love the hospitality at this show. And the fans that attend are always super cool. Thanks to Shelton, Dustin and everyone else involved in the show. There's a reason I'll be back for year 5 in 2010.
I did the most commissions I've ever done at one show this year. Here's some highlights.
I did another cool Conan after the above one sold and someone else was about to buy it. Olli Hihnala was cool enough to throw some quick colors on it too.
I drew a lot of ladies at this show, which is fine by me!
I sat next to and roomed with Jason Horn, Dean Trippe and Evan Bryce. Who are some of the coolest people on the planet. Also, to my right was fellow ACT-I-VATE member Roger Langridge of Muppet fame. Super super nice guy. We did a fun art swap.
I feel like I spent a good portion of the show eating.
I also it was great hanging out with Jason, Elizabeth, Jen, Mike, Jimmy Danielle and Lamar almost the entire show. And thank you Chris for all the lifesaving hotdogs during the show.
I look very interested in what Andy Kuhn has to say.
I also hung out and went to dinner with Guy Davis and his super cool fiance Rosemary. Jason and Dean stayed and extra night and came along. We ended up making our waitress cry. Apparently when combined we're pure trouble.
After that we made our way to the after show party at the Heroes store and everyone nerded out over comics for the rest of the night.
I also met Chris Schweizer at the show as we were sitting near eachother and I can't praise his work enough. Everyone needs to pick up Crogan's Vengence from Oni. On that note, everyone needs to pick up Remake by Lamar Abrams.
Here's us waiting for the shuttle back to the hotel on the final night.
Good times. -
July 02, 10:05 AM
Man I suck!
I owe my livejournal followers a huuuuuuuge update that will include tons of art, and a Heroes and Staple con wrap up.
I promise.
Also, I'm in the middle of some intense comic work getting a couple things off the ground, so Party Bear is taking a few weeks off.
I hope you understand, and you all want to see me be able to feed myself right?

Heroes 2009!
Hey, last minute decision to go to Heroes this year.
I'll be in Indie Island at table 418 next to Dean Trippe, Evan Cranston, Jason Horn and Roger Langridge.
I have freshly printed minis with never before seen art and new comics. I'll also have a limited run of Iron Man prints and of course a few copies of Aqua Leung.
Also, no Party Bear this friday due to the convention.
See you in Charlotte!

New Party Bear
Hey, as I'm trying to build some online readership for Party Bear, I thought I would cross post the new page this week here for people that don't normally read it on ACT-I-VATE (Or don't remember it's on there).
Also, if you missed it I did a quick interview about it on Newsarama a little while back. Check it out. The page count number is off, I don't know what happened there.
