The summer of 1992 I was 13 years old and just out of the 8th grade. I was a total spazz socially, tending to bombard people with my intense energy. Add on to that the fact that I wasn’t even remotely able to admit that I was gay, and you have one lost girl. There was only one place that I felt safe, where I could be free - inside of a song.
My very strict Christian parents allowed me to listen to a limited list of secular artists. I was allowed to have The Bodyguard soundtrack because Whitney Houston sang Jesus Loved Me on it - little did my parents know the epic camp queerness of this album.
I spent my summer listening to nothing but side A of that cassette tape - Whitney’s side - I Will Always Love You, I’m Every Woman, I Have Nothing, Queen of the Night. I would press the earbuds of my Sony Sports walkman into my ears as I lipsynced along with Whitney and felt every deep emotion along with her. She was expressing all the overwhelming feelings that were churning inside my confused brain, calling out things that I couldn’t beginning to form yet. The relief was emotion pressure being released. I listened to that tape so much that I rubbed all the writing off it, wore the tape down in places.
Thank you for being there when I needed you during all the times in my life, Whitney.
Cecil Beaton’s visitors’ book is a who’s who of the 20th century, and contained the signatures of Greta Garbo, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dali and, of course, the Queen, among many others.

‘Cult of Beauty’ exhibition curator Stephen Calloway discusses one of Aubrey Beardsley’s great early masterpieces, Siegfried, and takes a look at Beardsley’s short but extraordinary life as one of the most important and distinctive artists of the late 19th-century Aesthetic movement.

Ms. Ishioka, who won a 1992 Academy Award in costume design for “Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula,’” came to be known as one of Japan’s, then the world’s, foremost art directors.
Bluebird animation based on Charle’s Bukowski’s poem (by sidewalkgazer)
The poem was adapted by Cambridge School of Art student Monika Umba.there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I’m not going
to let anybody see
you.
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I pour whiskey on him and inhale
cigarette smoke
and the whores and the bartenders
and the grocery clerks
never know that
he’s
in there.
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too clever, I only let him out
at night sometimes
when everybody’s asleep.
I say, I know that you’re there,
so don’t be
sad.
then I put him back,
but he’s singing a little
in there, I haven’t quite let him
die
and we sleep together like
that
with our
secret pact
and it’s nice enough to
make a man
weep, but I don’t
weep, do
you?
