Nettra Pan

This photo was taken when I was 17. We took a short break during our road trip from Phnom Penh to Kampong Som, Cambodia. The warmth and optimism of these Cambodian children continue to inspire me every day.

When students get to college, they hear a couple of speeches telling them to ask the big questions, and when they graduate, they hear a couple more speeches telling them to ask the big questions. And in between, they spend four years taking courses that train them to ask the little questions—specialized courses, taught by specialized professors, aimed at specialized students.

As quoted by Rob Reich. This is a thought provoking post on education and society with links to great essays by William Deresiewicz (if you haven’t heard of him you should definitely check him out!)

  • “Don’t tell me our youth is running out. It’s only just begun.”- Foxes in Youth I also like the Adventure Club Remix. Thinking of the quote above the fireplace in John Jay hall at Columbia and missing my classmates who will be graduating this May 2012. “Hold fast to the spirit of youth, let the years to come do what they may.”- John Jay I’ve learned to embrace this thought. Before I found the mortality it expressed so powerful it made me uncomfortable. This song is an upbeat modern take on the topic. (via pamisley)

  • Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers (The Magician Remix) [2011] A great song to dance to while brining in the new year! Been dancing to it for two nights in a row already. And this slower version for the cool off ;) (via songs)

  • itssomethingfrench: We Are Young (feat. Janelle Monáe) - Fun I don’t think my interpretation of this song’s meaning is correct, but I have loved it for a while. I find it both comforting and inspiring. Plus, I applaud the artists’ decision to create such a unique music video for the song. Not sure if it worked completely, but I liked that they took a risk. Plus, the actress is beautiful! And then their acoustic version is not that bad either!

  • U2 - Miracle Drug In high school I thought that this song was about love, romantic love, but after learning about Bono’s dedication to helping Africa, reducing poverty and promoting development by improving health and education in developing countries, I can’t shake that this might be about a pharmaceutical drug, a cure for AIDS, increasing access to treatment through generic drugs or other means, or some other miracle drug for those suffering in poverty, violence, misery. Either way, this is always going to be a favorite song. (via everlong222)

  • Since I shared some corny 90s songs with you for inspiration, I figured I should also share something a little more modern… one of my favorites: Many the Miles by Sara Bareilles. (via settorise) Interesting version. Love how she never performs the same song twice. So far this is my favorite version. And this one is not bad either, with a beautiful setting to boot! Going to try and play it on the guitar later using these tabs. Update: I’ve been spending too much time listening to alternative versions — I didn’t even recognize this as the album version.
