Stars align in Hollywood for "Night of 140 Tweets"

What happens when you get 140 performers -- from the biggest names in comedy to the biggest up-and-coming funny people, mixed in with Hollywood stars and starlets, musicians, writers, children's show makers, porn stars, and just plain clever people -- put them in a 99-seat sold-out north Hollywood theater, and let them unleash their favorite and sometimes raunchiest Twitter posts? You got the crazy scene last night at A Night of 140 Tweets, an all-star benefit for Haiti relief at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre hosted by Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel, in partnership with Ben Stiller's Stillerstrong and Funny or Die.

Stiller, as @redhourben, posted afterward late last night, in all-caps: "BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN AND SUPPORTED NIGHT OF 140 TWEETS. ESPECIALLY THE NAKED GUY. WAY TO RAISE MONEY FOR HAITI. HE WON."

Richsommertweet That'd be Rich Sommer from Mad Men! What a mad man. He Tweeted: "I had a terrible dream that I was onstage, naked, in front of a bunch of people. Weirdest part: @alyankovic was there." (thanks @wittels)" Photos from WireImage. If you want to see all of that in video, though, it'll be available for purchase March 26 on Amazon.com as video on demand or DVD. Pre-order it NOW, people!

Video on Demand: A Night of 140 Tweets: A Celebrity Tweetathon For Haiti or Full DVD below:

I wasn't there, but because it involved Twitter and unfolded on Twitter, I and the rest of the world all could feel like we were there. Who was there, though? Among the many, either onstage, via video or just part of the experience were...

Steve Agee, Joanna Angel, Aziz Ansari, Eric Appel, Scott Aukerman, Greg Behrendt, Lake Bell, Matt Besser, Michael Ian Black, Alex Blagg, Aaron Bleyart, John Ross Bowie, Matt Braunger, Neal Brennan, Hannibal Buress, Owen Burke, Neil Campbell, Chad Carter, Jessica Chaffin, John Cho, Chantel Claret, Jackie Clarke, Diablo Cody, Andy Cohen, Colton & Aboud, Dane Cook, Rob Corddry, Eugene Cordero, Caprice Crane, Whitney Cummings, Jon Daly, Rob Delaney, Jamie Denbo, Katie Dippold, Andrew Donnelly, Dragon Boy Suede (Howard Kremer), Colton Dunn, Abby Elliott, Shannon Elizabeth, Josh Fadem, Damien Fahey, Paul Feig, Dave Ferguson, Will Ferrell, Greg Fitzsimmons, Eric Filipkowski, Nathan Fillion, Cody Fisher, Jake Fogelnest, Dave Foley, Janina Gavankar, Brett Gelman, Freddie Gibbs, Ian Gomez, Dana Gould, Jon Glaser, Brea Grant, Sasha Grey, Bryan Greenberg, James Gunn, Curtis Gwinn, Ilan Hall, Chris Hardwick, Har Mar Superstar, Dan Harmon, Ed Helms, Michael Hitchcock, Dave Holmes, Mikaela Hoover, Rob Huebel, Brian Huskey; from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenny, Kaitlin Olson and Mary Elizabeth Ellis; Mindy Kaling, Jensen Karp, Ellie Kemper, Kerri Kenney, Kyle Kinane, Jen Kirkman, Nick Kroll, Chris Kula, Ashton Kutcher, "La Bamba" from Conan O'Brien's band, Jon Lajoie, Natasha Leggero, Thomas Lennon, Samm Levine, Dan Levy, Riki Lindhome, Adam Lisagour, Justin Long, Lost's Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, Doug Luusonhop, Neil Mahoney, Joe Mande, Demetri Martin, Maximum Fun's Jordan Morris and Jesse Thorn, Tricia McAlpin, Jenny McCarthy, Liz Meriweather, Kate Micucci, Emily Maya Mills, Andy Milonakis, Mike Mitchell, Eugene Mirman, Demi Moore, Seth Morris, Olivia Munn, Arden Myrin, Kelly Oxford, Gil Ozeri, Adam Pally, Jarrad Paul, Eddie Pepitone, Chelsea Peretti, Busy Philipps, Mike Phirman, Aubrey Plaza, Kevin Pollak, BJ Porter, Brian Posehn, Stephanie Pratt, Questlove, Mary Lynn Rajskub, June Diane Raphael, Jonah Ray, Rob Riggle, Chris Romano, DJ Samantha Ronson, Mike Rosenstein, Jeffrey Ross, Sophia Rossi, Jordan Rubin, Deana Russo, Paul Rust, Bob Saget, Tom Scharpling, Paul Scheer, Ariel Schrag, Ben Schwartz, Mike Schur, SlashFilm's Peter Sciretta, Adam Scott, Kevin Seccia, Michael Showalter, Bill Simmons, Sarah Silverman, Cameron Sinclair from Archtiecture for Humanity, Kevin Smith, Rich Sommer, Martin Starr, Ben Stiller, Caissie St.Onge, Alec Sulkin, Ethan Suplee, Nick Thune, Paul F. I won't post any of the 140 Tweets, because I want you to buy the DVD. Instead, here are just a few of the many amusing comments from the sidelines:

@JohnRossBowie: "Best part of #140tweets? Comedians pretending they don't recognize pornstars."

@james_gunn: "Highlight of my career? Last nite at Night of #140Tweets someone tapped me-"Mr. Gunn? I wanted to meet you. I'm Al Yankovic." Not kidding."

And here's a short report from one of the audience members, TV Blogster.

Live from SXSW: Tim League Talks International Genre Lunacy

If you're a hardcore movie geek and you've been to Austin at least once, you're probably familiar with the magical Tim League. Along with his wife/partner Karrie, Mr. League is the man behind not only the sublime Alamo Drafthouse movie theaters, but he also unleashed Fantastic Fest upon the world AND found time to create a karaoke bar/bowling alley called The Highball. Obviously Mr. League does none of these things by himself. But he does captain one hell of a movie shrine.

Anyway, the man loves nothing more than scouring the planet for the finest in lunatic cinema, and if he doesn't track it down, one of his many scouts probably will. Logically, with SXSW 2010 freshly underway, I thought it'd be fun to chat with Tim about his obsession with international genre fare, and the man certainly didn't disappoint. Let's get to it:

How many North America film festivals do you go to each year? And how many outside North America?

Tim: Other than Fantastic Fest, of course, I personally attend about four North American festivals a year and probably four more outside of North America. In addition, the Fantastic Fest scouting team generally hits another four or five international festivals beyond what I attend. My anchors are the European Film Market/Berlin Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. We go to those two every year.

What countries would you say hold the most respect (or reverence) for genre films? More specifically, which countries/festivals love horror flicks the most?

STAR WARS Meets PARKS AND RECREATION Opening Theme

    slice_star_wars_parks_recreation_01.jpg

The more we can disassociate Star Wars from the prequel trilogy, the better.  The best way to do that is that our parodies should only acknowledge the original trilogy (and the real original trilogy; none of that special edition bullshit).

The more you watch Parks and Recreation on NBC, the better because it’s one of the funniest shows on TV right now.  After the jump is a parody of the opening of Parks using Star Wars.  The video is only 22 seconds, but it’s a kind of stupid-weird humor that makes me giggle so I’m posting it.

Parks and Recreation airs Thursday nights at 8:30/7:30c on NBC.

THE BUTCHER'S BLOCK - Chopping It Up With Excitable Eccentric, Screenwriter MAX LANDIS

    Max1.jpg

Welcome to the first installment of an ongoing feature I'll be doing, spotlighting talent that may not have "two nickels to rub together" (to paraphrase a reader here at Twitch), but tomorrows giants are today's unknowns. Hopefully we here at Twitch can help in some small way by focusing on those, who in my humble opinion have something a little extra special, and help them get noticed. We kick it off with Max Landis, a trippy guy to say the least, and a major burgeoning screenwriting talent. Okay Mr. Big Daddy Movie Deal Maker, are you reading?

    YEP, THAT’S A BURN.

    jlo-burn

It’s not uncommon for people on the Internet to say bad things about Jennifer Lopez. It is, however, unusual for such editorial content to show up on Hulu, where some lowly coder or page designer tagged her “Saturday Night Live” episode with “has-been” and “cellulite.” And I can’t help but feel that the “comedy” tag is a little sarcastic.

Even though I pity J.Lo more than I dislike her, I love any little example of corporate drones fighting back and displaying some individualism. It always reminds me of the Independent Thought Alarm:

As discovered by /Film, it’s a B-movie originally made in 1975, but left unfinished after the death of star Duke Mitchell. It was recently completed by Bob Murawski, a film editor from The Hurt Locker and Drag Me to Hell. The finished version is set to premiere March 12th at the Egyptian theater in Hollywood. From /Film’s press release:

Of all the films I have been involved with, the one that I am most proud of is GONE WITH THE POPE,” Murawski said. “Completing this movie was a 15-year labor of love. No expense or effort was spared in rescuing this classic from cinematic oblivion and finishing it with the utmost quality.

Man, how is it b-movies have taken such a huge step backwards in the last 30 years? This makes the best thing Troy Duffy’s ever done look like a retarded kid farting on a speak n spell.

NINE BADASS HYBRID MONSTERS THAT DESERVE THEIR OWN SYFY ORIGINAL MOVIE

Depending on your interest in film, you might not have heard of Roger Corman. He’s going to get an honorary Oscar this year, largely because the tireless director/producer helped launch the careers of Hollywood luminaries like Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, Robert De Niro, and Sylvester Stallone, among others.

More notably for our purposes, Corman is producing the Syfy original movies Dinoshark and the unrelated Sharktopus, neither of which should be confused with his 2004 work Dinocroc, or, for that matter, the other 400 films — mostly B-movies — Corman has made during his career. Clearly, this is a man who knows and understands the appeal of a hypothetical monster comprised of two or more badass animals.

But there are still so many possibilities that have yet to be made into low-budget Syfy original movies with terrible CGI animation! Why, I went through Corman’s IMDb page, and not one movie had the word “bear” in the title. HOW CAN YOU WORK IN THE MEDIUM OF BADASS HYBRID MONSTER MOVIES WITHOUT ANY BEAR-BASED MONSTERS?

So let’s correct that. Here are nine totally badass hybrid monsters that deserve to star in their own B-movies. Some are bear-related; some are not. Some of these you might have seen around the Internet before; others were pulled from the ether of my mind. And I’m not just being poetic when I say that; I huff a lot of ether.

    1. BEARSHARKTOPUS!

Why is Roger Corman wasting his time with Sharktopus when he could be making BEARsharktopus? Sharktopus is always going to be plagued with the weakness of JAWS, in that the danger is limited to the water. But Bearsharktopus? THERE IS NO HIDING FROM BEARSHARKTOPUS.

    2. GREAT WHITE ‘69 MUSTANG!

Part great white shark, part 1969 Mustang Fastback, this is either the fastest car in the sea or the deadliest fish on the road. And look, it’s driven by Steve McQueen!

    3. WOLFOENIX!

When I was a kid, I read a book called David and the Phoenix. It’s about a boy who befriends the phoenix before the mythical bird is reborn in its pyre. I still recall a scene where David and the phoenix get ice cream, and the phoenix talks about how much he likes strawberry ice cream as opposed to chocolate or vanilla.

Do you think Wolfoenix eats strawberry ice cream? HELL NO. Wolfoenix would eat David and crap him onto a waffle cone.

    4. BEARODACTYL!

(original cartoon by the terrific Matthew Inman)

I used to think flying sharks were the scariest creatures in my imagination. And now I know why: because flying bears with reptilian wings are TOO TERRIFYING TO IMAGINE. Holy crap, how could you possibly stop bearodactyls? I think gorillas with Stinger missiles would be our best hope, but those apes can barely learn sign language. I’m not sure I’m ready to trust them with surface-to-air missiles.

    5. CTHULHUNICORN!

H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu is widely respected by Internet denizens as the biggest, baddest, most terrifying monster ever created, but he has yet to really break into the mainstream consciousness. Why? I suspect it’s because he’s TOO scary, so I gave him some big blue eyes and a unicorn’s horn. Now he’s practically cuddly!

    6. BEAROTAUR!

Oh, that is one medieval nightmare of a killing machine. Fast like a horse, powerful like a bear, armed with a morning star, and not even slightly relaxed by a stroll on the beach.

    7. TRAMPIRE!

Everyone knows that Charlie Chaplin died decades ago… OR DID HE?!? Maybe he was bitten by the blood-sucking undead, and now he lives on in the perpetual darkness of Michael Mann movies, sneaking up on his victims while ominous piano music plays.

Hmmm… In retrospect, I should have gone with the slutty kind of “tramp” and not the silent film character.

    8. PIGEONSHARK!

Pigeons are already crawling with disease and flying around our cities, unafraid of pedestrian traffic. What if they had a TASTE FOR FLESH?!?!? Sure, it might seem great when they start eating the old people and hobos who ordinarily feed pigeons, but what happens when the hobos and old people are all gone? Then they come for us! And if the pigeonsharks don’t get you, the typhoid and black plague they spread will!

    9. CHIM-PAND-EAGLE!

I take back what I said about bearodactyls being unstoppable. This is the hero who could stop them.

Metric Unveil Black Sheep, Our First Listen to the Scott Pilgrim Soundtrack

    clash_and_metric

In devising the soundtrack for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Edgar Wright has chosen specific bands and artists to sub for the fictional musicians of the comic strip. Pilgrim’s band Sex Bob-omb have had their tunes supplied by Beck, Broken Social Scene will be providing the noise of Crash and the Boys and Metric were tapped to bring The Clash at Demonhead to life, at least in terms of the music they make.

Today, Metric have made their first Scott Pilgrim track available via their Facebook Fan Page. It’s simple enough - you become a fan and the streaming player is activated. The song is called Black Sheep and while it was not written specifically for the film, it seems that this recording was done specifically for the soundtrack.

One such fan has already commented on the song featuring guitar whereas the band in the strip don’t have the instrument in their live line-up. Hardly a deal-breaker is it? Indeed, I’m relieved that Wright is fiddling with the fine details and hope he’s not held back at all in his adaptation. There’s not much I find more disappointing than a slavish big screen translation of a comic or novel that just wasn’t going to work unaltered in cinema.

AMC Showcases Best Documentary Oscar Nominees

Last week I complained in my Doc Talk column about how I wished I had an opportunity to see all of the Oscar nominees for Best Documentary Feature. Well, my prayers have been answered by AMC Theatres, which will be hosting a marathon of all five films this Sunday, February 28. It's a great idea for us doc lovers to get a showcase similar to the cinema chain's annual Best Picture Showcase. Now, for a mere $30 (of $25 if you're an AMC MovieWatcher cardholder -- which you could likely join for free on the spot), you can see, in this order, Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country, Which Way Home, The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, The Cove and Food, Inc.

You also get, same as the Best Picture Showcase, a large popcorn and unlimited refills, though none of these are really popcorn movies in the way many of the Best Picture nominees are. In fact, it might be kinda off putting for you to eat corn while watching Food, Inc. Not nearly as horrible as eating dolphin sushi while watching The Cove, but still a bit ironic. The other issue I have -- not that I should be complaining since I wished for a showcase like this -- is that it's only happening at two of AMC's cinemas, NYC's Empire 25 and LA's AMC Santa Monica. Isn't there anywhere else in this country that people like documentary film? At least the Oscar-nominated ones?

Derrick, you are not going to fucking believe this. You know the show you’re up against? Soul Quest Overdrive? It’s my fucking show. I’m the Scottish soccer ball in the pilot!!! I recorded that voice a year ago and totally forgot about it until checking the link on your post right now.

It’s Kristen Schaal, David Cross, Jon Benjamin and my fucking ass. I heard the show wasn’t getting picked up and didn’t even know they had animated it. We have been pitted against each other against our wills. Since when is God so fucking funny? Wow.

Think of it this way: Whoever wins, we win. It’s like the Superbowl. No matter what happens, America wins.

    See both shows here.

There Is Definitely Not a Rick Astley Music Video Contained Anywhere In This Post [Rip]

There seriously isn't, you guys. Because Sony took down the original Rick Astley video because of a terms of use violation. Sorry internet, no more Rick Rolls for anybody. Truly a sad day for memes.

    SUCKAZ!

There are still like a bajillion other versions on YouTube. Just go here, here, here or here. They just took down the one with 40 million views. So instead you get the one with 30 million views. Still has that fresh Rock Roll'd scent on it. But seriously, Sony doing this does accomplishes nothing this except display their ignorance about new media.
