Sean Patrick Rielly’s
-ICONIC PAINTINGS
from History, Literature and Popular Culture

While working on the managerial side of the animation industry, this San Fernando Valley native found himself developing his own style of caricature. Within this style, noses are not represented. Are the noses cut off to spite their faces? Can the characters not see past the end of their noses? Is this the direct result of them keeping their noses to the grindstone? The question is left open ended. The heads are always inflated. The eyes are big and expressive, yet semi-vacant and sometimes slightly cock-eyed. The face is always contorted into a never-ending scream, gasp or exclamation. These elements are combined into an overall result that perfectly reflects the artist's personal feelings about our shared history, literature and popular culture.

...and because I adore the Watchmen graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Rather than paint the main characters of the story, I decided to paint the first generation of superheroes in the comic, the MINUTEMEN circa 1940.

well, here we are my friends, just a little over a year since i started the ICONIC PAINTINGS from History, Literature and Popular Culture. LEBOWSKI's LAST SUPPER is the last painting in this series. It's been a fantastic voyage, but it's time to to move on to a new theme. Perhaps one that is a little more focused in theme. Any suggestions? I was thinking about FAMOUS BATTTLES or HISTORY'S LESSER KNOWN HEROES or even SAD EYES, CROOKED CROSSES, a return to my 'old school' style of painting. Drop me a line with your two cents.

thanks,

PAINTING 016 - TYLER DURDEN MEETS TYLER DURDEN - These are the two pieces that were shown at the January group show. They were individually painted and framed, but were intended to be displayed as one entire 'side by side' piece. I am really happy with the final results! Alas, they were hung incorrectly at the gallery, one on top of the other, but regardless, I received some really encouraging feedback.

PAINTING 015 - Final Submission of classic scene from Jaws. This was extremely fun to paint because I like to watch the movie as I paint. Therefore, I got to watch the film maybe four or five times. The print is available if you follow the links on the right hand side of the page.

PAINTING 005 - here's the final painting of THE BEATLES. Entitled 'IMAGINE THERE'S NO HEAVEN' The focus of this painting is the "Paul is dead" rumor. "Paul is dead" is an urban legend alleging that Paul McCartney of the British rock band The Beatles died in 1966 and was replaced by a look-alike and sound-alike. McCartney is alive and well as of 2007. (or so says wikipedia).
Cannibal Flower Group Show! Unfortunately, the painting did not sell, but it did get to see the big city, get dressed up in a fancy new frame and get an evening out amongst the cultured artists of LA.

so 'Paul', if you still want it, the painting will have to rise in price.

Thanks to the mysterious Fred Flintstone and to the wonderful people of the Cannibal Flower organization! And Special Thanks to Julie!

PAINTING 004 - here's the final finished painting of THE ELEPHANT MAN. Joseph Carey Merrick (5 August 1862 – 11 April 1890), known as "the elephant man" gained the sympathy of victorian era britain because of the extreme deformity of his body.

that's right. yours truly, misterEtickets, also known as Sean Patrick Rielly amongst friends,
will now be accepting submissions for ideas on what to paint in the ever expanding collection of ICONIC PAINTINGS from History, Literature and Popular Culture.

the rules are pretty simple.

1. the subject or group of subjects should be either a) historical figures, b) characters from literary works or c) people who fall under the popular culture category.

2. they should be easily identifiable and and thus, ICONIC. If they don't have physical traits or characteristics that aren't recognizable, there should be at least some context that they could be put into that would help easily identify the subject.

3. submissions should not contain graphic depictions of an adult nature. although i'm not against including porn stars or horror films, the adult content would only be implied and not actually seen.

if your submission passes these three easy rules, it will be drawn. that's a promise. a select dozen or so will be painted and included in future showings of my ICONIC PAINTINGS from History, Literature and Popular Culture series. that's also a promise. the only thing i can not guarantee is the timely manner in which they are drawn or painted. i'll always gravitate toward the idea submissions that spark my interest first and i reserve the right to prioritize between public submissions and private work.

let the submissions begin...

FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT- FACT: Roosevelt addressed the nation in a series of 31 radio broadcasts referred to as the FIRESIDE CHATS. He was quite skilled at ad libbing his speeches and would often take two drafts of the same speech and extemporaneously dictate a third draft.
December 10, 01:43 PM

BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA II- FACT: Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. He is a cigarette smoker, currently trying to quit a two decade long habit.
December 07, 01:14 PM

THEODORE 'TEDDY' ROOSEVELT- FACT: While preparing to give a campaign speech in Milwaukee, a mentally unstable man attempted to assassinate Roosevelt, and shot him with a pistol at point blank range. Wounded, Roosevelt declared "It will take more than that to kill a bull moose!" and finished his lengthy speech before visiting a hospital.
November 17, 02:53 PM

ABRAHAM LINCOLN- FACT: Lincoln used adept political genius and acute managerial skill in selecting his presidential cabinet. His cabinet was composed of rivals from within his own political party. For more information on Lincoln's cabinet, I strongly suggest you read Doris Kearns Goodwin's TEAM OF RIVALS.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN FACT: Abraham Lincoln is the only U.S. president to hold a patent. In May of 1849, he received Patent No. 6469 for a device to lift boats over shoals. His invention was never manufactured.

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON - FACT: He was sixty-eight years old when he ran for president. He was the oldest president elected until Ronald Reagan. His age was a major issue during the campaign. After winning the White House, in an effort to show his health and vigor, he had the longest inaugural address of any president, clocking in at a little over two hours and 8,444 words long. He wore no overcoat in the harsh, cold, winter morning in Washington D.C. This was March 4th, 1841.

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON - FACT: That same month, on March 24th, 1841, he came down with a cold that developed into pneumonia and pleurisy. He died nine days later on April 4th, 1841. Doctors and scholars continue to argue whether the two incidents were related.

George Washington is the only president elected unanimously by the electoral college. He was one of America's first patron of the arts, purchasing colonial landscapes of the Americas. He was also quite a lively dancer and fond of gambling.

Here's my painting of General Washington taking Trenton from the British.
