**Note this blog entry is back dated and refers to last Saturday 21st when I flew from Llangollen to Firenze**

So I'm currently in Pisa on the way to Firenze but before I get there and my mind is over taken with Italy I really want to say a bit about my week in Llangollen.

Front page with my train tickets out stickered on.
Off the train- first impression "Wow there's a lot of us!"
Before we got shipped out to our respective countries everyone on the April-July intake for ECTARC spent a week in Llangollen learning our language. Altogether there were about 40 of us. 11 for Italy, about 8 for Spain and the rest spilt between Berlin and Hambourg. Most of us stayed in the hostel which as you can guess was pretty busy and noisy.
Words... So many, words..!

Getting to know my group and getting the last of the pasties in!

I found the language learning never got over-whelming as you could take a quiet walk, phone home or chat to someone on the scheme. All in all it was a brilliant way to ease you to what really is a big scary thing to do.

Let it be known, no good comes of didgeridoo's at 3am.
Ofcourse some nights are better than others and threes not a lot you can do when personalities clash but open-mindedness helps a lot. Also if something really bothers you just talk about it- it might save you a few hours rubbish sleep (should listen to my own advice but I mean, really, who puts a didgeridoo in a hostel?!)

The ECTARC building we learnt at in Llangollen.
On landing in Pisa me and the girls next to me kept staying wide eyed "Guys. We're here. We're ACTUALLY in Italy." I think that quote says it all- we just couldn't believe we'd taken the gig life changing step of living in another country for 3 months. It's exciting and the week in Llangollen helps stop it being terrifying.

So now, excited and weighed down with bags 9 of us are heading off to our respective homes for the next 3 months.

"Adventure is out there!"

Hello! So, as you know I'm currently learning Italian the fun/scary/crazy way. I'm also doing it on a budget.

When I first decided to go for this scheme I set about trying to get a foundation of knowledge the cheapest possible way. Here are some of the things I did (all of which were entirely FREE:

  • Raided the library for Audiobooks. Its costs to rent these but the staff were fine with me uploading them to my laptop there and then for free. Make sure to check at your library though, you don't want to annoy anyone! The one I went back to again and again was Pimsleur's Italian Short Course. I did dabble in another called Italian Language Builder but I found it far too advanced.
  • Language Learning Sites. I spent quite a lot of time on BBC Languages' Italian section working through their tests. I found their pattern pretty good and it made you aware of how much you were learning as you went. Pretty nice for just a quick test to see how much you might know as well. I recommend you start your learning there!
  • Downloaded Podcasts. Admittedly I didn't get a lot of use from these but that's mostly because it was quite a bit later on I found them and, for me, they were too short for one listening session. Either way if you want short bursts of knowledge this could be for you. The ones I tried were My Daily Phrase Italian and One Minute Italian.
  • Listened to the audiobooks. In my sleep, on the way to work, whilst I was doing chores, whilst I was drawing and whilst I bathed. Basically for any task that didn't require me reading or writing at the same time. I didn't necessarily pay full attention but listening to these especially the Pimsleur book really helped me.
  • Listened to Italian radio. As I knew I was going to Firenze I started putting on various Italian radios until I found one that suited my tastes. I then took my favourite songs and made a small Spotify playlist. Beware though most radios play a LOT of English language songs so all you'll really hear is jingles. Fiesole100 and Radio Rock Roma were my favourites. I used Tune In to find them and streamed them through iTunes which worked okay.
  • Skimmed through language guides. Well in my case it was 5 little freebie guides from The Guardian newspaper from awhile back. They weren't particularly useful for me but they were entertaining and nicely written.
  • Listened to a tailored Spotify playlist. Using the songs I liked from Italian radio I managed to build up a pretty decent playlist which you can listen to if you like. Listening to these built up an awareness and I actually get the songs in my head quite often and find myself singing them. The song Punto I found myself singing today and actually using my new knowledge to mentally translate- which was both unexpected and fun! I have two playlists one with catchy Italian songs and one of Italian soundtracks of Disney films which was good for association. On the catch Italian songs playlist I recommend listening to Indietro / Breathe Gentle which has two versions one with an English/Italian duet, quite interesting even if it is just standard pop music.
  • Talking to Italian friends. This is pretty good for people who know the language quite well but for me it was tricky. Having said that my friend helped me grasp the basics better and got me understanding basic pronounciation.

After all these things I started the ECTARC Leonardo course and as such am being trained in Italian using the domani books. The scheme is funded which means all I have to pay out are a few (small) travel expenses and extra's- we even get money for our meals and transport! Without this scheme there is no doubt in my mind- I would NOT be learning Italian and I would NOT being going to Firenze to do so! I really can't over-state how much of an impact this whole thing is having on this Valley Girl's life!

Ciao!

P.S. I promise the next post will be shorter and full of pictures I just wanted to get this lil idea for a blog post out of my head. :) Hope you guys found it useful!

Hey all, so you may know I'm off to Italy to work and study soon. I'm heading out thanks to ECTARC and their Leonardo program. As part of this scheme we get training in our chosen language for a week then we get shipped out to our city- in my case Firenze (Florence) and there its 3-4 weeks of language learning time then into a 9-10 week work placement.

I'm due to fly out to Firenze (Florence) this Saturday and I'm pretty darn excited to say the least! Before starting this scheme my biggest language based achievement was a D in short course second lanuage GCE Welsh. I used to be ashamed of that but now I see it as just a sign that I was brought up in a very small closed world- I never even went abroad until I was 21. A little while ago I was given the chance to expand my cultural mind with Transformat Lab where we briefly visited Budapest and Paris. In less than a week in each place we learned so much about the cultures and even some language it was amazing- and that wasn't even the number one focus of what we were doing!

When the chance came along to join the ECTARC Leonardo scheme I was surprised and shocked- 3 months in Italy! Its insane. I'm a valleys girl. I grew up thinking Cardiff was far away and not seeing the point in going abroad. True story. Just ask my friends Amy Brazier or Nick Clackett and they'll regale you with stories of trying to broaden my mind whilst I stayed stubborn to my roots. And like my D in Welsh I'm not ashamed to admit it. I was wrong, there's this whole fantastical world out there! Anyway, enough about that.

The main thing I want to say is, I'm about to head out to spend 3 months in Firenze and I'm quivering in my practical-boots with both excitement and fear! I'm heading out with a group of other Welshies (all of which seem far more worldly and amazing than me) and we'll be dotted around Italy working.

I've been keeping a journal and I intend to scan and upload the pictures periodically for your viewing wonder! Despite the length of this post I'm not very big on words and I think the journal entries will better explain the ups and downs of this whole scheme for me.

For now here's a really grainy photo of my wonderful and evolving journal:

Hey guys so this week I decided to start a new group for some friends on Facebook. The group is called Cardiff Weekly Art Challenge and its already grown quickly and people I've never met have contributed.
Basically there is a weekly theme that people can contribute their art to. Last week was Muppets and here's my entry:

Everyone else's submissions can be seen here in the Facebook album. Or you could take a look at the official page for Cardiff Weekly Art Challenge.

The new theme is Back To The Future and I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Hello all! You might have heard of the Raspberry Pi. Its a bit of kit designed to help school children learn to program. Its a clever project but, as its not released yet they don't have any cases for it. As a piece of hardware it looks a bit fragile so, at my brothers request, I set about design a case for it. I decided I wanted to do it in Lego (because I'm awesome like that) and with a mixture of the real stuff, program Lego Digital Designer and some references I managed to make some models.

Now onto my designs! With these I've worked out everything down to how the layers come apart, the correct colours (you can't get all the colours in all the lego pieces so its a bit limited), how the hinges work, positioning for the ports, how to get the drive in and out and proper support for the drive when its in there- don't want it moving around. (Sorry for the long sentence, at least you know its me typing and not Wikipedia!)
I needed to make this reference model to be sure of sizes and to be certain of the grid I needed- it turned out to be a very awkward odd number which made finding the right pieces much more difficult.

Here was my first shot, with a couple of different colour schemes. I wanted to add hinges to make it easier to get to the device.

So this is more or less the final non-themed design. 'What you mean non-themed?' I hear you cry! I mean not like these last two designs.

You may know that my other half Jamie Gibbs of Mithril Wisdom, loves Egypt. Yeah he's got a Masters in it and everything. So here I made for him an Egyptian themed design. Less portable with that bulky lid but the hinges on the side mean you can still get at the ports and, I suppose, if its harder to get in its harder to break it!

Finally my TARDIS. If I do ever get a Raspberry Pi I'm totally making this for myself. The doors are on separate hinges so you can pretend its a real TARDIS. Theres also the chance for some clever person to hook up the Pi's status lights to the light on top of the TARDIS. I have no idea how though, maybe someone can show me!

So what do you think guys? I had a lotta fun making these and I really hope my brother likes them seen as its for his birthday and all (which is today).

10 to 20 minute drawing of the wonderful Benedict Cumberbatch. Its unfinished, hence the lack of hair and undefined sideburns (they were in the reference but I'd rather have done a study without them). Had to draw this guy, I'm just fascinated by those cheekbones and jowls. I think this quote sums him up well:
"Look at those cheekbones. I could cut myself slapping that face. Would you like me to try?"

Meet the Rainbow Dodo. He is not happy to see you. I, on the other hand am, hello! There is a reason for this guy but I'm not gonna share that with you just yet. :P

New year, new hobby. Or rather my first hobby. You see, I've never managed to have a hobby so when my Mam got me a sewing machine for Christmas I thought I'd have a real go at the whole hobby thing. In the shot above you can see my cute sewing machine and a box of sewing bits that my Grandma gave me; below those are my creations - the towels you see are where I practised my stitch lines.

Although I've flicked through some magazines and articles I didn't follow any patterns for these - instead I opted for the "go it alone" attitude. First off, I cut up a pair of old jeans to make the little plant pot cozy you see (using a cut of the leg and stitching up the end). Then came the plushy Torchic's little hat that I made with little scraps.

My third creation was the drawstring coin purse also made of jeans. And finally a coin purse with a zip and lining. Because I didn't use any measurements or templates they are both a little wonky but I'm still chuffed with it.

And finally, here's a pretty shot of my plant pot cozy.

I think I'm quite liking this hobby lark. Hopefully there'll be more to come!
To all crafty types, what was the first thing you made on a sewing machine?

Today I saw a man running in the hail holding his shoes and running in socks. This perplexed me so much it warranted a drawing.

Just a quick post with a doodle. I was walking home through Roath park when I passed this handsome husky. I sat down to draw him, he was clearly waiting for his owner(s) to get out of the butterfly house. He was so patient and happy, just sat there on the spot staring excitedly at the direction they'd gone. He stood up at one point when he thought he saw them but quickly went back. Such a lovely dog, hard to do justice to.

No idea when I'll be able to scan this so you get a photo from my phone while I'm "On the road".

Tis a manly unicorn!

Quick warm up drawing. I caught a line on wikipedia about, somewhere in the bible, the devil turned into a seven headed dragon to fight archangel Micheal. While I usually stay away from bible-based stuff I really fancied drawing this one. Didn't take very long, no more than half an hour I'm sure.

Link to the wikipedia article
*Note: I'm aware it should be called a hydra but I didn't feel like arguing with Wikipedia.

An idea I had for an iPod game it might still happen so I won't go into details but here's an early idea for the loading screen. Its too cluttered and I'm not sure if "Dragons" needs an apostrophe somewhere but there you go.

Decided to start doing a meme I came across. The original post is here and its by Sylvia Tran (Princesssylvia). I'm enjoying the challenge so far and loving the feedback my friends on the ol' Facebook are giving me :)

Day 1: Yourself. I'm best known for my hat wearing aficionado status.

Day 2: Favourite animal. This a husky-dragon cross as I couldn't decide between the two.

Day 3: Favourite food. STRAWBERRIES! (and cream for design sake).

Day 4: Favourite place. The road to/from my home town.

Day 5: Best Friend(s). My friends Bryony and Kate as My Little Ponies (MLP:FIM). Kate's totally not a lover of the show, hehe.

Day 6: Favourite book. The Light Fantastic. The book that led me to a spree of Pratchett reading. Have now read all the books.

Day 7: Favourite movie. Empire Records. Mucho love for Lucas and Mark especially.

This monkey could quite possibly win an award to for an obscenely long time to be finished. He's still not, by the way, I just wanted to upload my progress and maybe get some feedback :) :) So what do you think needs changing?

So as the snow promises to keep up is attack on the UK I doubt I'll be able to get this picture to the printers in time so I've decided to pop it up here for the great people of the web to see. Its a Christmas present for my brother who introduced me to both Professor Elemental and Mr.B The Gentleman Rhymer. If you don't know these chaps I've attached some videos below, the bottom being the inspiration for this picture. Enjoy!

^ In-game shot of sunset with lens flare and volcano

Hullo! So I recently heard of Unity 3D and quickly hopped over and downloaded it. Following a tutorial I made this lil island below. Its a game in that you can move around it and jump about but as yet do little more. I really enjoyed the terraforming and matching lighting and sky images. My next step will be to create my own textures and explore that particles business.

^Multi-views of my island

As a traditional animator by training I find these programs fascinating but as familiar as italian to someone who only speaks French. Still, with the help of some tutorials, I've prodded and clicked my way around this thing. I'm also really looking forward to replacing the sky (made up of several cleverly positioned images) with my own.
Finally I feel obliged to mention the mass of snow Wales has been blasted with recently! As a result I was nagged into making my first snow angel (tho I have drawn them before link and link) lots of fun. Anyway, it all delayed this post by a few days but nevermind, tis all sorted now!

^Shot of volcano exhibiting some particle smoke magic

With thanks to Will Goldstone at Vimeo for his wonderfully easy to follow tutorial

A recent commision for an angel with guitar wings. Bit of a stylistic departure as I don't usually veer so close to the anime stuff.
November 09, 08:18 AM

Hello blog, I got busy and forgot to update you. A lot of the work I've done can;t be shown until the relative, film/game is released and I'm currently reviewing my blog and showreel so, for now, here's a sort of placeholder. I did it in a lunch break whilst working on a horror film a little while ago. Took no more than half an hour.

July 03, 04:20 PM

A warm up drawing at work (The cool work, not the one involving pasties) I still thinks its unfinished but whenever I open it I just can't think what to change. Sorry for the extra watermarks btw, I just like this image more than most- wouldn't wanna lose it! Heh. :D
