Graphic and web designer who loves comics and life.
I finished watching Young Justice last weekend. The ending was fantastic but sad.
Young Justice was a show that I looked forward to every time I watched it. Not only was it one of the best comic based cartoons I’ve ever seen, but it was about more than that. It was about these young heroes separating themselves from their mentors and forging their own path. It was about growing up and all the hardships that come with that process.
The show focused on the evolution of the characters and their relationships more than the bad guys they fought. It focused on heartbreak, betrayal, love and loss. All while providing climactic action and intense story.
If you haven’t seen this show, I would strongly suggest it. Even if you’re not a fan of comics, you can relate to some of the problems these characters put themselves through. I can only hope that when I have children, there can be a show that I not only love, but respect enough that we can watch together.
I finished the new Tomb Raider last night. What an amazing game. I can’t stress enough how everyone should play this. It has great action, satisfyingly difficult puzzles and a great sense of accomplishment when throughout the game. Not to mention its absolutely gorgeous.
Besides all the things that make it a great game, it also reinvents a classic character we’ve had for years. No longer is Lara Croft an invincible, female Indiana Jones. She starts out as a regular (an attractive model, but with meat on her bones and seemingly enough space for all her organs) person, and throughout the game she gets the shit kicked out of her physically and emotionally.
She becomes a survivor. The game is brutal to her. She’ll often get 3 steps forward and then get pushed 2 steps back. Everything is a struggle for her, which makes it so that when you finish challenges you face in the game, you’re all the more satisfied with what you’ve done.
In the end she is scarred, filthy, and covered with her friends and enemies blood, but she makes it out alive.
I hope to see games use this as a shining example to help base their work on and I cannot wait to play another instalment in this newly imagined franchise.
I got a bunch of Magic for my birthday! Some of my pulls / cards I was given include Tolarian Academy, Blind Obedience, Emrakul, the Aeons torn, Lilliana of the Dark Realms, Giant Adaphage and Promo Gravecrawlers.
There will be more birthday posts as this 28th birthday continues!
Check out some great local Halifax artwork, now featured on Society6!
Hey Lovely Folk!
Because of your brilliant feedback, I’ve decided to make DINNER IS SERVED available as a framed/unframed print, pillow, tee, or tote!
The very very VERY best part? If you order now, Society6 is being so kind as to waive shipping for unframed prints, which is super duper radical of them. So you can save a ton of money, and that’s always a plus.
In order to get free shipping, however, you need to click on the following link:
http://society6.com/JJSteeves?promo=a57fef(That way not just any ol’ stranger gets the promotion, but rather only my most valued customers.)
Thanks a million for your support folks. Fingers crossed I’ll get to tell you about some super exciting projects that are on the horizon sooner rather than later.
Sloppy kisses,
jei
This was my preliminary design for a poster for a Fabian Cousteau talk that was coming to our city. The client had a multitude of changes and things that I felt kinda compromised the design. There are some battles you fight and some you do not.
I realized that I haven’t been posting too much of my graphic design work in a while. This project took a long time to finish. There was so much back and forth with the client, and then back and forth with the clients owners. It took forever. We also ended up going through 3 developers with it. Thankfully its all done now and more or less working and looking exactly as it was designed. To view the whole site, visit www.snowisland.ca
I’ve added some new toys to my desk because my digital picture frame is on the fritz. So now we have Gundams on the right and Halo Spartans with a Warthog on the left and some fun Robots in the centre. I think everyone should share a desk photo, be it from work or home. I think you can learn a lot about someone from their desk space.
I got to play Magic with some new people over the weekend and my legacy Dimir deck did pretty well for a while. My Nightveil Specters had snagged a few good cards and some land for me while Lazav on turned into Aurelia the Warleader. Not too bad. I got overwhelmed though with 3 other players. It was still loads of fun though.
Last night I ended up winning a 9 player free for all, with my Blue/Black zombie mill deck. When it was down to just myself and one other player, I had 15 2/2 zombie tokens (made earlier by Undead Alchemist) and a 20/20 Wight of Precinct Six. Plus the Nightveil Spectre. It was a serious amount of fun.
I ended up staying alive, as most people started targeting each other with extreme prejudice. So people were being picked off pretty quickly and early on.
The Spider-Man costume for Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been revealed (left), and it is looking fantastic. I didn’t hate the one from Amazing Spider-Man (right), but this new one feels great. I’ll be really stoked when we see more of Jamie Foxx’s Electro.
If you’re having a bad day ( or even if you’re not ), here is a picture of a penguin dressed as Judge Dredd. You can buy a vinyl figure / collectible of this little guy here.
I’ve started watching Escaflowne this weekend. I always remember the crazy invisible mechas and the main one (Escaflowne) transforms into a dragon. So far its been pretty dramatic. I haven’t watched anime in a while so I’ve forgotten about the amount of drama. I just want to watch robots fight. I’m thinking of starting Evangellion. I’ve never watched that one before, but it seems confusing where to start.
I was talking to a friend the other day about how I hated Elesh Norn. She is such a game breaker when she comes out. Then I was thinking, I should build an Elesh Norn themed deck. So I did. Its not terribly original, but it keeps in the flavor of her and all the cards are from New Phyrexia. Hopefully I’ll have it all together by tonight. I love building aggressive White Magic decks. They’re not usually expected.
Great article on some cool local street art in my city. The site also has some interesting articles on the community and local art / vendor scene as well.
Hey Lovely Folk!
The ShopHop, a really neat website which is currently working to highlight Halifax’s local shops, artists, galleries and curios has done a truly brilliant piece on the Stray Kitties and I. The above photographs by Christian Aires are honestly two out of three decent photographs that exist of me in this world, and for that I am grateful.
(My older brother still says I am incapable of not making a goofy face in a photograph, and I won’t argue with that.)There is an interview you can read here.
And an artist philosophy/bio you can find here.
The coolest thing about this site? Everything they highlight is within walking distance of the downtown. Amazing, right? Let’s make this city a walking-friendly landscape again! Thanks for your time guys!

Just the start of our multiplayer game tonight. I won a couple over the course of the night. Milling (I love it) and once in multiplayer with my artifact deck. Simic didn’t fair great but I used some fun combos like Rapid Hybridization on the Strangleroot Geist to evolve my dudes and get an extra creature on the board. Good times.
Tossing around some Magic cards last night. Testing out some new decks and helping some friends tune theirs.
New promotional video to join Cobra Special Forces. I saw a HISS Tank in the video, so now I have to sign up. The Joe’s have terrible aim anyway, so I won’t die.
