My name is Matthew Hayhurst and I currently Iive in Raleigh, North Carolina. I’m a father to a wonderful four year old son, whose imagination and love for life humbles me everyday. I enjoy being outdoors, writing, creating art, reading books, listening to music, watching films, and iPhone photography.
I published the music blog, The Perm & The Skullet c. 05-08. I’ve had the honor to showcase my artwork alongside the works of Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso and Robert Rauschenberg. From 02-09 I was Producer, Director & Co-Founder of the award winning Second Cinema, a monthly television program that focused on filmmaking in North Carolina. Recently, my writing has been featured on the music blog, Aquarium Drunkard.

The beginnings of Wilgefortis III.
I’ve begun to incorporate a more collage path with this painting. As of now It is charcoal with photographs, cardboard and paper on mounted paper on canvas.

Wilgefortis Stage 12
While I think I know the direction I will head with this painting, something I wanted to add first was a fiddler in the bottom right corner, a common theme in Saint Wilgefortis’ story.
Untitled (The Birth of Wilgefortis). c. 2012. Charcoal and watercolor on paper, 14 x 17”.
Untitled (Female Form). c. 2012. Charcoal on paper, 14 x 17”.
I finally started drawing in my larger sketchbook. I wonder why I didn’t sooner. The larger surface area has been freeing.
Wilgefortis Stage 9
I finally have returned to Wilgefortis. Sitting back and observing has truly helped. I’ve defined the head region a bit more and completed the background in the upper half of the painting.
Below is a detailed image of the background on Wilgefortis. I’m really pleased with how it’s turning out.
Wilgefortis II. c. 2012. Enamel, acrylic, charcoal, graphite and paper on canvas, 22 x 28”.
Stage 9, and possibly the final stage, of painting number two in the Wilgefortis series. I’ll reflect on this work for a few days before I’m willing to call it complete.
Stage 6 of the second painting in the Wilgefortis series. Can’t wait for paint to dry so I can loosen the confines of the face.
