My recent academic work has focused on the ocean – specifically 1) the relevance of an age-old law, the public trust doctrine, to managing modern-day demands on marine space and resources; and 2) our use of the oceans for food. Ocean stewardship and the public trust doctrine
- My dissertation work concerned a policy question: can an ancient common law, the public trust doctrine (PTD), reshape how the United States manages its ocean resources? Working with Steve Roady, Rafe Sagarin, and Larry Crowder, I studied the legal aspects of and ecological justifications for extending the PTD to federal ocean space and resources.

Global seafood production and trade
- My work on seafood concerns the impacts of the global seafood trade on marine social-ecological systems. This research mainly stems from the 2009-2011 National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) Working Group on Envisioning a Sustainable Global Seafood Market and Restored Marine Ecosystems, which I helped coordinate, and from a 2011-2012 postdoctoral fellowship at NCEAS.
