How quaint: the elusive fail whale makes an appearance.

The Google Earth Revelation That Is Blowing My Mind

Besides helping pretty much everyone in the world get around since 2004, Google Earth has uncovered concentration and detention camps that North Korea has tried to keep secret for years. According to organizations like One Free Korea and The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, somewhere in the neighborhood of 200,000 people are being held in these camps.

[Original by One Free Korea and Google Earth. For more information, check out The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea.]

In recent years, physicists have found that people invariably prefer a certain mathematical density of fractals — not too thick, not too sparse. The theory is that this particular pattern echoes the shapes of trees, specifically the acacia, on the African savanna, the place stored in our genetic memory from the cradle of the human race. To paraphrase one biologist, beauty is in the genes of the beholder — home is where the genome is.

Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin salutes as NASA Administrator Charles Bolden looks on during a wreath laying ceremony as part of NASA’s Day of Remembrance, Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Arlington National Cemetery.

Wreaths were laid in memory of those men and women who lost their lives in the quest for space exploration.

We Are Carl

A little creation by me to bring a close to Carl Sagan Day. Sagan showed us that understanding the universe is within everyone’s grasp, that we are all scientists, and that in a vast cosmic arena, this Pale Blue Dot holds all the beauty, pain, love and knowledge that make us what we are. This universe is worth understanding, and can we all play our part.

How many people have ever been born? You’ve wondered this.

No matter how down you feel sometimes, take solace in the fact that you are one of the lucky 6.5% (or really a bit more, since this only goes through 2011) of people who are still alive.

Growth is why it’s a rational choice economically for so many founders to try starting a startup: growth makes the successful companies so valuable that the expected value is high even though the risk is too.
