Using the concept of gravity, the tension that’s created between our bodies, the ground (earth and object), and technology, my interest is in the meaning that inhabits this space between resistance and attraction.
My work and materials are concept-driven. But whatever the result, it is an exploration of our world from a sensorial perspective with socio-political content.
Themes in my work have included the relationships between technology and body (female), movement/motion, the senses, through the definitions of the “fold” (moving forward and back upon itself), what’s “in-between” (the polar opposites, for example), “what’s left” (our “footprint”), and the concept of “away” (where is “away”?).
I would like all of my blog friends to send me a digital video (no longer than 30 secs) of something that is meaningful to them or a piece of their own artwork for an online collaborative art piece. The 30 seconds must be unedited. Something shot for a total of 30 seconds. Everyone involved will be emailed the final video by the end of August 2011. Please msg it to me thru email: artist@luhanna.com before July 25th, 2011, and remember to include your name and your email, so I can send you a copy. Thank you!
Although this isn't my work, I found myself thinking, "I wish I'd thought of that!".
This is a documentary that focusses on revealing the truth that tattooed women come in all sizes and professions. These women are not the drug-addicted biker chick sex object stereotype that exist only for men's fantasies. Bravo! Snakegirl Productions!
Custom t-shirts are all over the place. In fact, I just designed one for myself. I'm hoping it will get me a job :B Btw- this one in the pic isn't my design...but it's a good one just the same.

I think we should borrow from this and bring the face of strength to our cities. The strength of women.
Mika Rottenberg is an Argentinian artist living in New york. Her video Squeeze is on view at SFMOMA (curated by Alison Gass) thru Oct. 3rd, 2010. "New York–based video artist Mika Rottenberg is known for her large-scale installations and interest in labor as well as process." Her work speaks to where feminism is today.
In the past few weeks, two amazing documentary ideas have come to me.
It can be so rewarding to live in a building of artists. If I hang out with them I usually run to grab a pen and paper to write down a new idea for some project. This is so important in my life! But my rent isn't rent-controlled, and someday in the next year or two I will have to move on. I have gone through this inevitable move so many times before, and I end up losing a lot of my work in the process (items too large or oddly shaped to move). If I could just stay where I am for ten years, then I may be able to keep my work and nurture the friendships with the other artists in this building and artist professionals. But that isn't realistic, and even though I am in Grad school for film, I expect that with this economy I will be funding my own documentaries for a while. At least mini-DVs take up less room than a sculpture (though not as tactile). My situation isn't unusual. While there are a few low-income live/work spaces for artists there are not enough, and often times the rent isn't low enough or controlled, so it keeps on rising. It's worse in Seattle (where I was previously), where the demand is so much higher and therefore the rents are out of control (if there are any spaces available at all)!
Just found out that I will have a piece in an exhibit in a gallery in Tokyo, Japan on October 31, 2010 for two weeks. Other artists in the show include Nick Blinko, Mat Brinkman, and Julien Langendorff to name a few. I haven't decided whether I will exhibit as freetrinket or Lu Hanna. Any thoughts? I will post more info as it becomes available. Stay tuned...
As the first posting on this blog, I would like to say I am an emerging artist whose constant mission is to find exposure for my own work and those around me and to live in affordable artist housing (so that I am not constantly moving and having to get rid of my artwork to find space for the new). That being said I am constantly inspired by the things around me in the SF Bay area and will post it as it comes up. Cheers!
