While sitting in a meeting the other day, the principal wanted to know if it was more cost effective to purchase Kindle Fires rather than the Apple iPad. At no time did anyone mention the B&N Nook. This simple example supports the idea that the Nook has a long way to go to get into the consumer’s head. It may be too late.
The New York Times published a look behind the creation of the Nook.
Inside the great publishing houses — grand names like Macmillan, Penguin and Random House — there is a sense of unease about the long-term fate of Barnes & Noble, the last major bookstore chain standing.
The layout work for the site continues to move forward. This site’s theme was activated but a few issues remain. For example, the duplicate postings issue is not resolved for the XenForo bridge. This involves new articles and comments. The RSS feed is working properly now. The navigation is still under development.

Peter King analyzed the sales numbers for Android based tablets and the Amazon Fire and Nook Tablet garner the largest share. While the overall market improved, the Apple iPad continued to outpace the competition. As noted, Google may not be benefiting from the increase in sales.
“These tablets are loosely based on Android, which is not accessing Google services and not accessing Google apps at market.”
The website 9to5Mac published information about the new employee incentive programs.
Cook announced that Apple employees will soon be given $500 discounts on purchases of new Macs and $250 discounts on purchases of a new iPad.
The new program starts in June 2012 and an employee must have been with the company for at least 90 days. I’m checking my calendar right now. Yep. It looks like I could start this coming Monday.
On a more serious note: Do the employees in China get in on this action too?
Electronic books are becoming more common and Apple’s release of iBooks 2 and iBooks Author may help students with the cost of these books – but – are they always cheaper? Below is a snapshot of the costs of some of the chemistry books. Worse, I was downloading and reading different chemistry books and two were just copies of wikipedia entries (those are not shown in this snapshot). Now that is just wrong.
What happened? Ah – you noticed. Thank you.
We are excited to present a continued refinement of the Tux Reports Network. Near the end of 2011, we made radical changes to many of our sites by physically combining them into one network. We accelerated the work so that we could unveil the changes on January 1, 2012. Besides the physical server changes, all community forums were converted to XenForo. We even added many new topics and we allow you to use one login ID for all of the sites. Heck – the sign up is even easier!
We didn’t finish the physical move for Technology Questions until yesterday (January 24, 2012). A nice hacker helped us make the move. Cough. To be clear, instead of trying to recover from a hacker running a script on an old WordPress plugin – we moved the site to its new home. The old content is on Tux Reports Tech.
Why the changes?
The new Q&A layout should help us keep to the site’s goal. Yes – the layout needs some love. We’ll get there. We always do. After all, Technology Questions was originally developed to ask and answer questions. The site moved away from this as we aggregated blog postings from our network of technology sites. We knew by the middle of last year that it was time to re-establish the site for the sole purpose of asking and answering questions about technology.
How do we define technology?
We will use the definition from Dictionary.com.
tech·nol·o·gy [tek-nol-uh-jee]
noun
1. the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.
2. the terminology of an art, science, etc.; technical nomenclature.
3. a technological process, invention, method, or the like.
4. the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization.
Emphasis is placed on “and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment” because we hope to move beyond “My computer doesn’t work” to “Do Promethean Smart boards improve student learning?”
And there you have it – a new layout – a solid means to our goals – and we hope you enjoy the clarity.

Awaking from a nice dream, I shot up and asked, “Are iBooks cheaper for a high school district? How can I calculate this for myself?” Here are some quick calculations:
Hardcovers
Hardcover texts cost as little as $89 per book, some textbooks cost as much as $110 or more. Using the smaller figure, a typical high school student enrolls in 6 classes per year or 24 classes per 4 year attendance. Multiplying 24 classes times $89 costs a school district $2136. Hopefully, the textbook is used over a 7 year period, therefore, divide the text by seven, yielding $305.14.
Over the years, I’ve learned to figure 10% loss of textbooks (ruined over never returned by the student). Ten percent of 36 books means, on average, four books are lost per high school student. This means the school should calculating spending another $356 for textbooks per student in a four year period.
Adding the initial cost of $305.14 and $356 – total costs may be rounded to $661.
iPads
An iPad 2 will cost $499 and 24 texts would cost $360. Adding these two values gives us a grand total of $859 initial investment per student. If these costs are spread out over seven years, we get a cost of $122.71. Now, I’m not calculating a ten percent loss – I’m not sure to assume a higher or lower number. This would depend on how excited the kids are about keeping the iPad.
How would you do the calculation? What would you change? What do you conclude?
Apple continues to grab attention in the blogosphere.
1. The iPhone 4S launching in China
4. Target opening Apple mini-stores
With all the news this week then you’d expect Apple’s market share to be climbing. Oh never mind, that was a January 9th story.
