Tonight while walking my dogs and listening to NPR, a woman walking a bike gestures at me to take off my earphones. I thought she was going to ask me for directions but she said “what’s your secret?” She said that I looked happy then started to cry. She blurted out that was going through a divorce. I told her that I was sorry to hear that and she said “really, do you have a secret to happiness?” I just looked at her a little dumbfounded. I didn’t know what to do so I offered her a hug. She dropped her bike, grabbed a hold of me, buried her head into my neck and sobbed. She said that she felt so alone and that I might have saved her life tonight because she so sad. I told her not to do anything stupid and that things will get better.
I asked her for her number. She gave it to me and said her name was Joy (Crazy, right?) I texted her and said that maybe could have coffee sometime and told her again not to do anything crazy because this is just a temporary set back. She thanked me and said she would text me later to let me know that she’s ok. I said ok and waved goodbye.

This is not the first time this has happened to me. I have given a shoulder for strangers to cry on before. It feels good in a weird way to be there for another human being when they don’t have anyone else to turn to especially when they need it the most. why me?
In honor of International Mr. Leather happening in Chicago this week, I’m going to post some photos I took a while back. Enjoy!

i don’t collect perfect seashells. i like to collect anything with a spiral shape inside of them or any seashells that have cool colors or patterns on them. I might have to put these in a planter to make room to collect more.
It was overcast today which means no one was out and about except me and this pelican. I think an overcast windless day is a great day at the beach because the water is calm and you can see fish fluttering at the surface of the water. You can find the best seashells then too.
Last night I took a walk to the pier and a fisherman shined a powerful flashlight down in to the water only to discover a big beautiful sea turtle swimming right under us. It was fantastic.
Every day I take my lunch break on the beach. Sometimes I stroll along the coastline and other times I’ll go swimming or people watch. Every time I’m on the beach, I make sure to pick up whatever trash I see and throw it out.
Today I ran in to a guy walking along the coastline towards me. It looked like he was hunting for shells, but as he approached, I noticed he was picking up all the trash that washed ashore. I asked him if he picked up trash on the beach every day and he said “Yes, every bit helps!” I smiled. After chatting for a few seconds, we found out that we live right next door to each other. I told him that I’ll make more of an effort to pick up more trash too. Who knows, maybe we can start a clean up club!
Dear Wes,
Thanks for doing your part to keep our shoreline clean. You’re right. Every little bit does help. Let me know if you want to start a trash pick up club. I’ll be happy to join in on the effort and even help recruit others who care about our beach just as much as you do.
Thank you for being you!

Bailey the gentle pit bull can be found around 7th street beach in Pompano Beach. Even though the city doesn’t allow dogs on the beach, Baily doesn’t care. She’s a law breaker. Mainly she snuggles there next to her pop, but sometimes she chases coconuts floating in the ocean.
She has her own Facebook page too https://www.facebook.com/bailey.atthebar
