Your soul is oftentimes a battlefield, upon which your reason and your judgment wage war against your passion and your appetite.
Each discovery or ‘solution opens the door onto a new potentiality and a new set of ‘problems,’ and in this way music organically develops and transforms: its techniques and vocabularies expand; its concerns change. None of these things can be called back or proscribed. If ignored they will not go away, undo themselves or cease to exert their transforming pressure on the whole.
People look, and take sight, take seeing, for life itself. We build on the basis of papers and plans. We buy on the basis of images. Sight and seeing, which in the Western tradition once epitomized intelligibility, have turned into a trap: the means whereby, in social space, diversity may be simulated and a travesty of enlightenment and intelligibility ensconced under the sign of transparency.
The universe is not just described by mathematics — it is mathematics.
I would rather live in a world where my life is surrounded by mystery than live in a world so small that my mind could comprehend it.
Shaping [our] surroundings entails a lot more than spatial, structural, mechanical, and other technical considerations – certainly a lot more than pontificating about matters of style. Our organic well-being is dependent on a wholesome, salubrious environment. Therefore exacting attention has to be paid to our intricate sensory world. This is primary if our surroundings are to stimulate our abundant perceptual, intellectual, and spiritual capacities, while at the same time accommodating our physiological nature and functional needs in a durable fashion.
It’s necessary to develop a critical intuition, rather than to imagine that the intuitive always produces something genuine or true. I think you can often replace intuition with research.
Twenty-volume folios will never make a revolution. It’s the little pocket pamphlets that are to be feared.
The more advanced science gets, the closer it is to art. The more advanced art gets, the closer it is to science.
In the realm of the phenomenal, “less is more” only when less is the sum total of more.
In the deepest hour of the night, confess to yourself that you would die if you were forbidden to write. And look deep into your heart where it spreads its roots, the answer, and ask yourself, must I write?
Scientific and artistic insight fuse, creating by their interplay a basic type of experience—neither science nor art, but a comprehension that has both the character of information
and the quality of poetic vision.
