Summary

I develop and manage projects that focus on how social media and emerging technologies can be effectively used for student engagement at The University of Western Australia including the Viral Leadership project, the Online Student Journey project and the NODE project.

I manage the UWA Students Facebook fan page and Twitter accounts and initated the UWA survey into first year students'access to, experiences with and expectations of University technology that I have run annually since 2005-06. I also research and write about the role of university staff in online student engagement and occasionally teach and liveblog events.

I was awarded a Fay Gayle scholarship in 2011 and will travel to Europe in 2012 to explore how Russel Group Universities use social media to engage and retain students.

    Team Leader - STUDYSmarter / UWA
    I lead the University's team of learning, language and research skills advisers and work with colleagues around UWA to develop strategies to best support learners. My own speciality is in the area of online learning and I am responsible for the Division's online communities on Facebook and Twitter. I also conduct training and offer advice for university students in the areas of online privacy, online profiles and network building.

    I conduct research into how professional staff learn and apply skills in emerging technologies and social media. I use leadership theories to explore how 'super-infectors' pass on their curiosity and enthusiasm for technology and are instrumental in driving organisational change

    Project Leader - ALTC Viral / UWA
    I lead this federally funded Leadership Excellence project and am repsonsible for the research, events, networking, budgets and reporting that occur as part of the project. I host networking and development opportunities for staff at The University of WA, Edith Cowan University and Murdoch University around issues of social media and emerging technologies in order to upskill staff in areas of mobile tech, digital divide, managing communities etc

    Project Manager - Online Student Journey / UWA
    My responsibility focuses on implementing online components to the face-to-face engagement programs offered by the Student Services Division at UWA. Adding a digital 'layer' to student activities includes creating and sharing video, creating digital stories, using animated online characters and making use of online polls, screen captures and discussion boards.

    I coordinate the growing social media presence of the Edmund Rice Institute for Social Justice (Fremantle) including managing their Facebook and Twitter content.

    Established and managed the in-house online social netowrk for UWA undergraduate students and coordianted the NODE Project (Networking Onlien to Diversity Engagement). Initiated and embedded the annual ICT survey of UWA first Year students

Additional Information

I research and write about the role of university staff in online student engagement and occasionally teach and liveblog events.

I am the Project Leader for the ALTC-Viral Leadership Project and am also the initiator and Project Manager for the UWA Online Student Journey project.

I manage the UWA students Facebook fan page and blog about running a University online community. I run the annual student ICT survey at The University of Western Australia and produce the TechNODE bulletins.

I am based in Western Australia and am the volunteer Social Media Coordinator for a social justice NGO.
