Innovation or Agility, what is the Technology Infrastructure imperative?
See on Scoop.it - coworking, télétravailler
You can’t get away from talk of innovation these days. It is in the hypo sphere (smiley) and the blogosphere, mostly driven by our collective adulation of Apple. It is in the business managem…

There is a reality that in Technology Infrastructure the marketplace drives innovation. Microsoft, Citrix, Apple, Google, VMware…Salesforce, 37 Signals, wow! There is more great capability and innovation happening there than any firm could absorb in years … And most firms aren’t.

So why are we not deploying this capability? Well smarter people than I can probably provide a broad array of answers,

“I think the Net generation is beginning to see knowledge in a way that is closer to the truth about knowledge. (…) Knowing looks less like capturing truths in books than engaging in never-settled networks of discussion and argument. (…) This new topology of knowledge reflects the topology of the Net. The Net (and especially the Web) is constructed quite literally out of links, each of which expresses some human interest. (…) And that’s the sense in which I think networked knowledge is more “natural.” (…)

To make a smart room — a knowledge network — you have to have just enough diversity. (…) There is no longer an imperative to squeeze the world into small, self-contained boxes. Hyperlinks remove the limitations that objectivity was invented to address.”
David Weinberger, Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, American technologist, professional speaker, and commentator, interviewed by Rebecca J. Rosen, What the Internet Means for How We Think About the World, The Atlantic, Jan 5 2012.

See on Scoop.it - coworking, télétravailler

So the hottest plane in the US arsenal is the F-22. There’s a picture of it below. Technically, it’s a marvel: it has stealth capacity; it can fly supersonic without afterburners — it’s a dominating machine. Indeed, it’s hard to call what would happen if the F-22 got into a fight with another…

… Oh: and it turns out that the F-22 has just been grounded … or at least its operations have been severely restricted. As it happens, its oxygen system doesn’t work properly, and pilots have complained. (Running out of oxygen at 40,000 feet is a problem, I agree.)

What the F-22 is, then, is a $400,000,000 airplane with nothing to do that can’t even do that successfully. …

Prepare for BYOD in your organization
See on Scoop.it - Things I grab here and there

Jacob Bradshaw discusses a few ideas and considerations that you should chew on while building your battle plan to handle the BYOD invasion.

Here are a few questions to consider:

- Will there any chance that the employee can use or attempt to use your organization’s intellectual property on their device?
- Is that type of access going to be allowed? If not, how will it be blocked?
- As an employee with a new device, how much control do you want to let your organization have over it?
- As an IT admin, how much control do you need to have over that mobile device?
- How big of a security threat is that mobile device to your network, and can your current infrastructure handle that much bandwidth and overhead?
- How much security is enough from an IT standpoint, and how much is too much from a user’s standpoint?
- Once the company is managing that device, how much end-user support is going to be rendered to the user?

Green taxes key to tackling European deficits
See on Scoop.it - Things I grab here and there

Green taxes should play a crucial role in tackling Europe’s spiralling deficits, according to a major new report backed by some of the continent’s political heavyweights.
The 160-page report from NGOs the European Climate Foundation and Green Budget Europe and consultancy Vivid Economics argues that carbon and energy taxes present an effective means of tackling greenhouse gas emissions and raising much-needed revenue, while having less of a negative impact on growth than conventional fiscal measure such as income taxes and VAT.

Interesting report sponsored by the European Climate Foundation. But what will the new revenues be spent on? The report also seems to skip to easily over the challenge of the regressive nature of such taxes (impact on poor households).

Ultrafast phase transitions - Graphite flips states within femtoseconds
See on Scoop.it - Things I grab here and there

For the first time, scientists have seen an X-ray-irradiated mineral go to two different states of matter in about 40 femtoseconds (a femtosecond is one quadrillionth of a second).

Ultrafast phase transitions from solid to liquid and plasma states are important in the development of new material-synthesis techniques, in ultrafast imaging, and high-energy density science. By using different pulse lengths and calculating different spectra, the team was able to extract the time dependence of plasma parameters, such as electron and ion temperatures and ionization states.
