(it’s going to be AMAZING—stay tuned for hella updates in the next few months)
XOXO
TLOBF reports the band will be playing two warm up shows this August. Catch them August 28th at the Junction in Cambridge and the 29th at Albert Hall in Nottingham. Tickets are on sale now via The Junctions website and ticketmaster.
Taking place in Champaign-Urbana, Ill., Grizzly Bear joins Dinosaur Jr., Cloud Nothings, Frankie Rose, Lotus Plaza and Tennis, among others at the festival happening September 27-29th. Grizzly Bear plays the 27th and festival passes are on sale tomorrow, May 9th at 10 AM CDT.
The handsome bears of @grizzlybear show their teeth. Except for Ed, who refuses to admit he has teeth.
Ed Droste, Brooklyn, 3.31.12 - his music can be found at http://www.grizzly-bear.net/
You can find your local station to tune into on the World Cafe website or wait to stream later today from their page (we’ll post the link here, too).
The band is very wary of revealing specifics regarding the record’s sound, and it becomes evident that they’re still figuring it out for themselves.
‘We’re a little early in the stage,’ says Droste. ‘We can’t be like, there are 11 tracks. This song’s about a penguin and it really means a lot to me.’
[…] ‘But there will be harmonies,” Droste concedes, before admitting his subtle attempt to subvert his peerless vocal style. ‘I’ve been trying to sing differently and not the way that feels natural. Just not exactly the same long tone holds all the time. I went through a period where I was trying to flex my singing ability, and I want this record to have less of that. But the biggest surprise so far is actually our ability to powwow together more this time. Not that it was bad before. Before it was like, Dan would bring things to the table, and some other people would bring things, but there’s no set way now. Anything can happen.’
Indoor Voices - After (feat. Sandra Vu of SISU)
Some time ago, Toronto shoegazer Jonathan Relph ”asked Sandra to play drums on a song (‘If I Die’). It never happened, so I was able to use that as leverage to guilt her into singing on this song.” Here’s the product of that relationship - a song that I’ve been sitting on, regretfully, far too long. Ethereal, spaced-out swirls of hypnotic vocals layered on a dream-pop melody.

“Fate” - Young Man/Colin Caulfield
Though Colin Caulfield has been making music under the moniker Young Man since 2010, it’s likely you’ll recognize him more for his previous youtube cover work that spanned the likes of Beach House and Deerhunter. Now leaving the bedroom for a studio and full band, Caulfield returns for the second release in his trilogy, Vol. 1. Each carefully layered addition makes for dreamy, lush and unhurried rock that lets Caulfield’s vocals revel in an ever present chill.
I kind of had no idea he was still continuing to work beyond cover songs, so this album is welcome news for me.
I have too many positive emotions towards this Divine Fits announcement. Many of said emotions contain hearts and exclamation points.
I always forget how much I love Les Savy Fav, like no matter how old I get and no matter what new tunes I find, I always can come back to them. I’ve been going through itunes stuff I haven’t listened to in awhile and I found this track and I’ve been repeating it since yesterday.
I’m kind of in love with producer Adam Bainbridge or Kindness’ debut, World, You Need a Change of Mind. Bainbridge is all over the place in kind of the best ways possible, giving listeners a taste of all his electronic capabilities without a firm commitment to any specific identity. From hip shaking funk suited for disco dance floors (“Gee Up”) to saxophone solos sexified and sweetened by a burst of flashy pop and spacey effects (“That’s Alright”), Kidness has created what should be your soundtrack for balmy, starless summer nights. It’s real great you guys, real great.
I have a weakness for scuzzy surf rock, and Los Angeles based punksters, Fidlar, are no exception. The self proclaimed slackers have yet to release a full length but this second EP, Don’t Try, continues to support their building hype. From the breezy, breakneck noodling of self loathing on, “No Waves” to the Black Lips garage pop of “Black Out Stout,” the barely 10 minute EP provides a brief, but damn enjoyable glimpse at a band headed out for a breakout.

Summer Mixing Volume 1 (mediafire // Spotify)
These are all tunes I’ve been digging lately/forever. I’ll have another mix later in the summer.
“Light Eyes” - SISU
Sandy Vu of Dum Dum Girls’ drummer fame returns with another EP from her own side project. SISU. There’s some lo-fi here to appease fans of DDG work, but Demon Tapes Volume 2 sees Vu’s vocals taking center stage with her falsetto intermingling among DIY gritty garage pop and blissful fuzz.
It’s available free for a limited time, so get on it! You can also catch the band when they open for DDG’s on their West Coast tour.
Despite Kerry’s insistence I never really got into HWGM. I liked them sure, but I just never really found them returning much to my must play tracks. That’s kind of changed with this release. A Different Ship is the closest I’ve come to knowing that an album is nearly perfect. Thanks to the production help of Nigel Godrich, HWGM’s psych becomes something else entirely, a refined thing of beauty. (Reviewed here.)

It is very crucial that you download this.
San Diego based, TV Girl, first caught my ear with their infectious indie pop, intermingled with notable samples on their first EP, Benny and the Jetts. The duo returns with a full fledged mixtape in the way of, The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle. “Loud and Clear” comes from said mixtape and gives you an idea of why you need to download.Stereogum is offering the download for free with bonus activity book from the band which includes mazes and coloring pages.
I dragged my brother to this Cloud Nothings show which was tbsveryawesome and now you can vicariously live through my beautiful time/dancing by downloading the album via the band! Click through.
The duo of Light Asylum gives their goth synth pop the full length treatment on their self-titled debut.
I’m so excited I get to talk about this band. Not only does “Actual Pain” contain some of my favorite lyrics of the year so far: “every bands trying to network or get Dum Dum Girls in the sheets,” but this debut of surf rock/garage pop is so freakin catchy. I’ve seriously fallen in love with the tunes this band is making. Read up on their debut album, Strange Heaven, via my review for CoS.
“Real Boy”/”Drive On” - La Sera
Kickball Katy Goodman of Vivian Girls fame, makes her return to her La Sera side project with Sees the Light. An album of self-described break up pop, Goodman continues her trend of creating some seriously infectious tunes, differing from her work with Vivian Girls. You can read my review of the album for CoS here.
Santigold - Disparate Youth [Official Music Video] (by ibelieveinsantogold)
I have such a love affair with this babe and everything she does, this included.
Say Anything was one of my favorite bands in high school because I felt like a bad ass listening to a song about a girl that touched herself. I don’t really listen to much pop punk anymore (because I discovered Radiohead), but all the good things I heard about their live performances proved true. I reviewed their recent Pittsburgh stop on the tour for Consequence of Sound.

Remember Our Days - Lotus Plaza
from Spooky Action at a Distance (2012)
Lockett Pundt’s material for Deerhunter has always been the tracks I’ve fallen in love with and can’t help but play on repeat (Desire Lines & Agoraphobia). His own solo stuff as Lotus Plaza is no exception. “Remember Our Days” is poignant, but simple, turning Pundt’s good-natured farewells into my favorite track from his second solo effort, Spooky Action at a Distance.
“Four Hours (Away)” - Young Prisms
In addition to a lineup change Young Prisms’ latest release, In Between, also features some seriously gorgeous shoegaze unlike their previously somewhat dense efforts that made more of a name for being stoner rock. “Four Hours (Away)” is one of my favorite tracks from the album and you can check out the rest of my thoughts here at CoS.
