PEOPLE SUBMIT THEIR WACKY MACHINE-GENERATED VOICEMAIL TRANSCRIPTIONS TO ME.
I PUT THEM TO MUSIC. SOMETIMES WITH AUDIENCE HELP.

Last weekend I was at PodCamp AZ (a new media conference) experimenting with something I called "voicemuze LIVE" - creating these songs live with the help of the live audience.

I didn't know what to expect but we had a great time and ended up recording a few new songs for the site. I hope you enjoy this first one - the audience picked which submission I would use, the style I'd do it in and the key.

Here's the original submission from my friend Tyler Hurst:

Yeah, Tyler, this is Mike Tyson summer is going to come. I got a message from Randy that you needed a tea time for sometime next week be happy to do that for you. Justgimme a call at [REDACTED]. We'll take care of it. Thank you. Bye bye.

If you enjoy the beatbox (or beanie) thing, you'll not hate Tomorrow Is Now.

Have your own logic-defying voice transcription? Send it to me here.

Thanks to my friend Merlin U Ward for shooting for me at PodCamp.

Tomorrow I'll be presenting at PodCamp AZ in Tempe. I'll be serving on a podcasting panel and I'll be doing something I'm calling "voicemuze LIVE"

My plan is to bring some of my backlog of amazing voicemuze submissions (poorly machine-transcribed voicemails), let the audience pick which ones to do, the instruments i use, and the style i do it in. I also plan on sampling some audience memebers for some of the beats.

I don't know exactly what to expect, but I'm pretty excited - it should be a fairly rad time. I hope you all come out and I'm able to get decent footage to share with all of you.

I spent a couple minutes working on what became the refrain/chorus at the end, then hit record. I hope none of you call Henry back, alright? Thank you bye.

And for those of you who want to get to the point, I give you the edited-down audio-only version.

I PUT THEM TO MUSIC. HILARITY ENSUES.

I know, I know, it's been a long time.

Just trust me when I say things got nutty.

I decided to go the live improvised route for this entry from my man Evo Terra.

He submitted 4 funky transcriptions at once, but I chose the following two.

Hey and I am Hi, I'm just jumping on think the gotten on country fun and on my way, so I need to know where I'm going. Love you bye.

---

I also money is. Love you, Mom.

Really, these things sing themselves. :)
Behold the video!

[edit] It turned out longer than I had intended. The audio version below has been trimmed down quite a bit, but still includes all the elements.

MY ONLINE FRIENDS SEND ME THEIR STRANGE MACHINE-GENERATED VOICEMAIL TRANSCRIPTIONS.
I PUT THEM TO MUSIC. HILARITY ENSUES.

Today's epic voicemail transcription comes to us from Lxndr. And it's fairly epic.

Got her Jason, Shelly chariots are probably Hensley, gimme a call back. Please. Please, please, please, please gimme a call back okay.

I mean look at that. It's short, but includes CHARIOTS and a rather impassioned plea. The only thing that would make this more epic? Falsetto harmony.

Chariots (Are Probably Hensley) by krysvs

I was a little lopsided on this one, spending the vast majority of my time in the last half, which meant the verse was basically improvised after I finished the chorus.

Fond of electric guitars, dude harmony, and a fairly nonsenical chorus? You will also enjoy Absolutely Website.

Have your own awful voicemail transcription? Submit it here.

PEOPLE SUBMIT THEIR ODD MACHINE-GENERATED VOICEMAIL TRANSCRIPTIONS TO ME.
I PUT THEM TO MUSIC.

My friend and moustache enthusiast Brian sent me this stellar voicemail transcription (featuring the strongest opening line yet).

This is a black woman. I want to Sue will, connect with you And ask you some questions about certain information that should go in the visualization I would like to. If you get this out. The Date possible because you know that to kind of to cover the designed rating. But I think she's day next weekend. Stef I sent. So, please gimme a call when you get a chance.

I usually don't concern myself with what the actual voicemail contained... but I remain curious about that opening line.

I hope you like my treatment - click below to play.

This Is A Black Woman by krysvs

A couple things about how this song came to be...

When I first received this submission, I thought I might go with a more soulful sound... but I went a slightly different direction.

In my last post, I mentioned that I like to try to keep things improvisational when I can. I was able to do that with this one - I picked up the guitar, fumbled my way through it once to get an idea for what I might do, recorded some leg pats for rhythm, then recorded acoustic and vocal on one mic. There's something wrong with my guitar. You can hear the wood rattle.

If you like the more improvised feel, check out Tomorrow Is Now - It's largely improvised as well.

And finally, thanks to my friend Matt Butson for being a good sport about being the cover art for this track :)

A quick note about my process.

People submit poorly transcribed voicemails.

I look through all the submissions for stuff that hits me just right. This is usually a combination of ridiculousness and a phrase that I think would make a good hook. I try to set a few aside during the week.

Then on the weekend, after my kids go to sleep, I get all my gear out and set it up at the kitchen table.

I bang out as much as I can in a couple hours. So far, it looks like it will yield 2-3 songs.

I try to improvise as much as possible. Sometimes I obsess over a section or concept a bit more than I should, but my goal is to go from concept to completion in one sitting.

This means the tunes aren't perfect, but it keeps it fun for me. And it works as a sort of forced-creativity excercise which has its own benefits.

I hope y'all dig it and share your favorites.

thanks!

PEOPLE SUBMIT NONSENSICAL MACHINE-GENERATED VOICEMAIL TRANSCRIPTIONS TO ME.
I PUT THEM TO MUSIC.

My boy Mark Dudlik submitted this delightful Google Voice transcription.

"Yeah, hey buddy. It's call. Have a very good. Whatever, it's sold out of something that's really willing to balls, Hello, this is local. Some of those sorts of when you can wait, Roebuck. Bill some level, so let me know that. Where's. How are you. I don't know what's up dude like black and white one go up so I don't know there's something wrong with call matt. She's."

the phrase "Have a very good whatever" grabbed my attention, and seemed to need some heavy synth backing.

Next thing I know, I've dragged my lovely bride into it...

She was a good sport, considering most people don't generally sing nonsense words. :)

please enjoy the track below.

"Hey it's Haiti it stamp again. I was just calling to confirm your 3:30 appointment tomorrow which is now and you will absolutely love herself."

nice work Google. Getting philosophical with "tomorrow which is now"...

I typically record my voicemuze tracks in GarageBand, but I wanted to do something different with this one.

My boy Chris Conrey at Integrum had an AMAZING shanked transcription he submitted for voicemuze.com. He said it seemed lyrical, and he was right.
I only used the first third of it... but maybe I'll come back to it someday ... trilogy?

The inspiration for this concept came from my friends at Forty.

One of them tweeted the following:

"I blood part that Shane I just never changed and then when I change thanks Neil I have the girls in 41 second of my only legal name she. "
[original tweet]

That was an OpenVBX transcription of a voicemail we just got @fortyagency
[orignial tweet

After reading it, I just HAD to put it to music.

And this blog was born.

fromme-toyou:

Meet me at the bar…

Four

Tomorrow my oldest daughter turns four.

It’s a big deal to me.

Those of you without kids are rolling your eyes because this information is meaningless to you.

Those of you who have raised teenagers are thinking “wait until they [fill in the blank]!”

Intellectually i get that, but this passage seems to have more finality to in than turning three. At three I can still think of her as a toddler, which is only like one degree of separation from baby. But 4 is clearly preschool age. Her sentences and concepts are getting more complex. She’s feeling more deeply and sensitive to adult social interactions. Her face and belly have thinned out into that of a little girl, not a baby.

I get that four will be fun and that i’ll probably have just as hard a time in the future. But right now, in this moment, it feels like i’m saying goodbye to my baby, and I’m wishing I had cherished each moment more as it was happening.

[Yaya, I love you more than you’ll be able to understand for a long time]

I adore that kid so much it hurts.

In fact, I’mma go pull her out of her bed to steal some last cuddles with my baby girl.

this is awesome.

Chrome Is A Hoarder

Anyone who uses a laptop knows the balancing act of managing your hard drive.

Space was getting pretty tight for me but something wasn’t adding up.

Then I found the culprit:

…5GB?!?!?!

That seemed a bit excessive.

So I dug deeper.

Chrome automatically updates itself. Sometimes multiple times within a month. That’s all well and good, but I didn’t realize it was keeping all the old versions!

I love chrome - it’s my browser-of-choice - but this aggression would no longer stand.

So I ditched the package, my hard drive let out a large exhale, then I downloaded the latest version.

Much better.

I can’t find any options in the settings for “Let chrome save all its old versions until your drive is full” - maybe I’m not looking hard enough.

So I guess I need to keep an eye on it. And maybe the conspiracy theorists were right - I can’t always trust Google. ;-)

I’ve heard it so many times: “I can’t sketch a stick-figure to save my life.”

Some people are afraid of showing their drawing to others. They think they’ll be ridiculed if their sketch looks like it was drawn by a five-year old.

In truth, it doesn’t matter if you are good at sketching. The…

EVTM - the "rules"

since #EVTM (East Valley Thursday Morning) is a community thing, there are no official “rules”.

However, if it’s your first time, there are some norms you should be aware of to help you make the most of it.

1. Buy Something

This is a must. We gather at a place of business and it’s just rude not to buy something, even if it’s merely a coffee. This one is non-negotiable in my mind.

2. Tip

We take up a lot of space, move stuff around, and are generally rambunctious. We can choose to bless the men and women who take care of us, or be a total pain. Please choose the former.

3. Be Social

For the networking professionals: Networking does happen at EVTM, but it’s usually after you get to know someone. There are no 30 second pitches. Bring your business card, but don’t lead off with it.
For the quiet (like me): We’re that big group of people having a good time, just walk right up, and we’ll make sure there’s a spot for you. It’s cool, a lot of us are slow to warm up as well, and there are those of us who aren’t (read: Susan), and they’ll make sure there’s plenty to talk about.
For the regulars: Don’t get so caught up in catching up with the other regulars that you forget to include the new faces.

Umm… That’s about it.

See you on the last Thursday of the month at Liberty Market.

My mobile production rig:

Macbook (and power)
Mac Mini (mouse, keyboard, power)
M-Audio 6 in/out audio interface
Large-diaphragm condensor mic (shockmount, windscreen, stand, cable)
Headphones (actual over-the-ear headphones)
25” monitor
(ipod, granola bars, guitar picks, altoids, etc)

And it all packs up so I can take it to/from the car in one trip… valuable in AZ.

The downside… if my bag gets stolen I’m screwed. :)

temporary

i’m reworking some things at krystofer.com, and I had been meaning to mess with tumblr… so this’ll do in the interim :)
