I have a roommate who’s seriously good at impromptu modeling. We did a mini session the other night that actually involved real studio lighting this time around. Just one light, not real complicated but always turns out some real moody and dramatic portraits.

This past Sunday I rode my bike in Brooklyn for the first time! We went all the way down to Dead Horse Bay. It’s the south east part of Brooklyn right before you go over a bridge to the Rockaways. The route we took through Brooklyn was about 15 miles each way. Needless to say I was pretty tired by the time we got back. Here are some photos from this weird adventure. Now I’m ready to go to a real non-landfill beach.

A couple weekends ago I surprised my friends in Richmond by showing up for the opening of the Flying Squirrels baseball season. This is the third year running where a big a group of us go. The first year 20 tickets were bought, last year 30, this year close to 40. Dave (friend and ticket buyer) and I were able to keep it a secret that I was arriving in town. It was pretty fun showing up to the game and surprising everyone. Of course grumpy Ian said “he knew” but it was still a good time. I got to see Mary, Ruby and Joe on Saturday, which was super great. She’s such an amazing little girl and so SMART. And funny! Here are some iPhone shots from the weekend all processed with the VSCO Cam app.

Last week my music PR friend Talia asked if I would be willing to come out to Williamsburg one afternoon and photograph the band Joyce Manor. They were playing at the Knitting Factory that night and needed some new shots. Shooting bands is always funny because it’s not something I do a lot and it’s usually 3 or 4 guys who don’t really care that much. I always feel silly “posing” them so with this little 45 minute shoot I used some “couple photography” tactics on them. Such as walking down the sidewalk toward me, I know they felt silly walking really slowly but you can’t tell in the photos right? I think we got some nice shots and they were really nice guys. Oh yeah and their new album is pretty rad. Check it out here.

On St. Patrick’s Day this year I second shot a wedding with my friend Jim at the Fox Hollow Country Club out on Long Island. I was very happy to have a great excuse to not go out for St. Patrick’s Day in the city. People wearing neon green everywhere, no thanks. Anyways the couple was awesome and it was a great dance party. Evan surprised Brooke with an a cappella rendition of “Blue Moon” at the reception with all of his groomsmen. Adorable.

Lesley and Perry live in Brooklyn and are getting married at the end of May. They are my first New York wedding that I’m not shooting with Jason. I’m glad they wanted to go ahead and plan an engagement session even though we totally got rained out in the end. We had fun and those two treated Christina and I to some tasty food in Alphabet City at the restaurant they once broke up at. Thankfully they stayed together this time around. Thanks so much to Christina for helping me out!

Last week Dorothy and Daniel came up to the city for a few days. I met Dorothy at Anne and David’s wedding in the summer of 2010. I don’t think I’ve seen her since then but we’ve kept up via Facebook and stuff. She is moving here this summer and I always support that. The last evening they were here we walked around the city some and got dinner at Panna II. What a cute couple!

Bright spring warm days are happening in New York! Finally! Last Monday I was off work and so was Daniel, Michael and Christina. So we made a lovely day of it starting with half price margaritas in Brooklyn and then some lounging in Central Park.

Finding out I was getting to go to Las Vegas was pretty exciting but finding out I was getting to go to Spain was even more exciting! Jason was asked to speak at a conference happening in Madrid and a couple of weeks before departure the event was cancelled. This was after passports were renewed and flights booked. Really?! A few emails later we put together a workshop with a photography school based in Madrid called WorkshopExperience. We had 13 students and a great translator, Omar, who spoke great English! By the end of our two day workshop (after running all over the city) we were all great friends and offering up places to stay for one another in New York and in Spain!

The flight we booked for me was arriving in Madrid about a day before Jason would. So it was up to me to check into the place we were staying and take care of that stuff. We booked a 2 bedroom apartment in the Chamberí neighborhood through Airbnb.com (I HIGHLY recommend) instead of a hotel room which was such a better experience. I got to the apartment and met the girl who had the keys and spoke pretty much no English. Being in a foreign country by yourself is weird. Not necessarily scary just weird. The apartment was wonderful and really put us in the middle of Madrid, not in some touristy area. That evening I took the Metro (it’s so easy there) to the Puerto del Sol area and I think I ran into an Occupy Madrid protest. I’m not sure since I didn’t know what the Spanish signs said.

The next day Jason arrived and that evening we met up with some fellow American wedding photographers and Canadian videographers. They were also doing a conference there that ended that evening and we got tapas and lots of wine afterwards. I had met Ben and Erin Chrisman in Vegas but only briefly so it was nice to actually talk to them. I met Patrick and Amina of Stillmotion who are really great and hope to see again. I also got to talk a lot with an actual Spanish photographer named Victor (www.victorsaboya.com) who does of a lot of really great boudoir (among other things) work over there. Check it out! It was great to experience a bit of Spanish cuisine and nightlife with some locals!

We had Friday free to wander a little bit. We both slept in a lot later than I think was originally intended.. dang jet lag. Took the Metro again and walked up and down the street where all the big museums are (Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen). There was some sort of event happening at a big cathedral near there because there was a line of people blocks and blocks long to get into the church. We actually went into the Reina Sofía and saw Picasso’s “Guernica” in all it’s very large glory. Jason also spotted one of his favorite photographs, which is always a bonus when that happens you know? Wish I had spent a bit more time there, guess I’ll have to go back! That evening we went over to the studio to meet everyone. Alberto and his crew were so welcoming and took us out to dinner for more Spanish food and wine! I think they all secretly enjoyed how quickly the wine got to us. I just can’t drink like the Spanish do.

Saturday and Sunday were very busy days. When everyone came in Saturday morning it was very quiet but we knew that by the end everyone would be chatting and having a good time, definitely the case. By the end of the first day everyone was best friends. We did a lot of location shooting so it was a great way to also see the city while working! Also Lola (one of the students) helped me pick out a red Spanish fan, can’t wait to use it when it gets hot on the subways in NYC! This trip was such a great experience and I hope to go back!

Me! Being badass!

Me! Working! It was really funny while we were doing this particular shot we had a huge crowd of people watching. So not what we are used to in New York, I think a lot of people thought they were celebrities or something. Once we were finished everyone was clapping. SO WEIRD. And fun.

Not all photos taken by me (I’m in some of them for once!), also I’m so bad about taking photos when traveling. Seriously what’s the deal?

The weekend between Vegas and Spain (blog post later I promise!) some Richmond friends came to visit. Brittany and Bill had gotten tickets to see Bjork and Ian came along to eat donuts. Studio visits, High Line, donuts, Crif Dogs, rain, East Village, Uniqlo, Miller’s, awesome food, The Drink, a late night stop at Manna for falafel, subway rides, donuts, everyone sleeping in one room, yelling at pseudo roommates, 20 sided stores, nerds, 20 sided die, beers in the apartment, Santos Anne, and free tequila shots rounded out a great weekend with friends. My favorite moment was at dinner one night when Brittany goes “I have to tell you something” and my immediate thought was “oh my god she’s getting engaged,” but really it was that I made her like NYC. I think she gets why I want to be here now.
