- Sep 01, 11by Kevin Hessel I don't get my hands dirty much anymore, but I had some ideas and ran with 'em. The paper's often a two-story front with one photo — no briefs or teasers — and that square ARK logo is actually just part of a layered banner that usually stretches across the page. So we just kinda randomly introduced a slew of changes (along with planned sentence-case headlines and new byline styles) in one swoop, much of them far earlier than expected. Not sure whether I'm making the staff or the readers more nervous.

For our 150th anniversary, on the right, I attempted to recreate the look and feel of that edition without breaking away from who we are today — we preserved the inverted-L format of our flag and teasers while the news hole remained as it would be any other day of the week.

- Nov 02, 10by Kevin Hessel The San Francisco Giants win the 2010 World Series championship. My county, Marin, is that piece of land that the OTHER end of the Golden Gate Bridge connects to. As for the design, I really admire the posterlike front pages that others did, but we really have a commitment to local news — and as you can see, the news hole story isn't about the Giants' victory, it's about Marin fans. To me, poster pages don't accomplish this and are more about being commemorative editions — not that there's anything wrong with that.

- DA office tells The Ark it has chosen not to file charges against the Tiburon woman who allegedly threw a dog from an S.F. apartment window. Insufficient evidence as dog's owner wasn't willing to give a statement and witness only saw woman's hands and arms. SF Animal Care & Control says the dog is OK and will be released to a party outside the county to ensure it's in a safer environment.
- Booker T. Jones, a longtime former Tiburon resident, took the Grammy Award a few hours ago for his album, "The Road from Memphis," in the pop instrumental album category. Jones and his wife moved to Southern California in 2010 after his recording career began heating up again.
- Yesterday's Yahoo shakeup, which will include the departure of its chairman, will also see the departure of Belvedere resident Art Kern. - Lucy Liu is currently in our office. Belvedere PD's new pet microchip scanner comes in handy as our assistant editor snared a lost dog while out on a walk. A quick scan and a call to Marin Humane Society gave us the dog's name — and the owner's phone number. Success! Get your pets microchipped!
