So I wrote and animated this tutorial for people working on my short film Bothered, but I figured it would be useful for all animators, particularly beginners. I borrowed some of these concepts from this awesome packet done by Jon Hooper and Michel Gagne, which is also pretty great!

I’m pretty sure these are all my own settings, not brushes I got from other people.

I realise that “Chalk” isn’t a standard brush shape, so a flat or any similar brush shape should do instead. (I often change it back to the standard circle depending on what I’m doing.)

The last one, being my line art brush, has a soft edge shape because like the effect. Also the settings tacked next to it can be accessed by double clicking the brush. (The same way as changing the name.)

I felt that their samples didn’t really show how the brushes actually work very well, so I scribbled out a few really quick samples. The ones I used are the arrow, block and circle brushes C:

Also, running the Start-SAI.exe in your sai folder will update the config files for you, so once you’ve extracted the brushes just run that!

This is how I have developed to draw stars in my starry night skies and of course this is only one of many ways people do it so feel free to take this with a grain of salt.

One thing I have also taken to heart is using brushes to help me. This a rather crude way to draw stars, but I like my results and it works for me.

Some more tips

If you want less stars, just draw less strokes. If you decrease the count, you will get less dots that are produced. And just the opposite, increasing the count will produce more dots!

You of course can also go to Layer>Layer Style>Outer Glow to create the glow around the stars.

By decreasing the Spacing, Scatter, Count (to 1), and Count Jitter you get a pretty great brush for creating the bio-luminescent lines the Na’Vi have.

You can save the brushes by clicking that little paper on the bottom right corner in the brush editor. It looks like the same symbol as the new layer button.
