I have to say I did enjoy my blogging experience because it helped me to test my English writing skills, and also gave a nice balance to the overall English class, since I had the opportunity to participate by speaking and also by writing. This writing feels a lot more intricate than sending a message by Facebook or posting it on the MySpace page of an English speaking person, so it was quite challenging in a certain way.

It also includes the time variable because you have to write the post within a period of time that is not very long but not short either. That’s a good thing.

Now that I think about it, I think that blogging in class has helped me with my English, since it reaffirmed what I knew about writing in this language and also taught me more vocabulary and ways to express myself more clearly. What also helped me is the dynamic that ‘s created when blogging in class, where there is the possibility for every student to help each other in a more informal way, that I think is much better that to be sit in class in a student-teacher typical kind of relationship.

Here in this room I feel we face each other more as equals, and I think that’s a key variable for learning while blogging in English class and it is an advantage that certainly most classes at college don’t have.

Another advantage that I have experimented is the friendly environment that’s created while blogging. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that this is an optional class that each student has taken because they have at least some interest in the topic. So everyone is very collaborative when it comes to help others and likes what this class is all about, even if we don’t seem very enthusiastic at times.

This is something that I don’t see often in other type of classes, where sometimes everything revolves around competing, not that there is anything wrong in trying to be the best, but in my opinion helping others is an equally important quality.

A disadvantage might be that this so called informality can be too much at times. We just sit in front of a computer to write, so some might think that this part of the class is not as important as the first one, since you can just leave the class and write your post at home, which is a mistake because of the friendly and collaborative work dynamic that I explained earlier.

So overall, my blogging experience has been very nice and helpful. I think it is a great tool for learning and it gives a nice touch to the class.

I’d love to be a musician or anything related to music, especially Metal. I’ve always imagined being a drummer as my dream job; I even had the opportunity to play the drums a couple of times at rehearsal rooms. I almost bought a drum set years ago while in school, but I couldn’t really afford it and it’s expensive to maintain.

The world of music has to be the thing that attracts me the most, I’d very much enjoy being a part of it.

To be a metal drummer the way I imagine, I would need to be fast, precise, devoted and especially, passionate.

I think I would be good at drumming because I imagine songs in my head every now and then and I think I would make a pretty decent job. I’ll also be able to give good ideas in to compose songs, not very often you find drummers included in the composition credits of a lot of albums. There are few who become very much involved, like Yoshiki Hayashi from X Japan, Vinnie Paul from Pantera and Steve Asheim from Deicide.

Finding this kind of job would be extremely difficult for me, mainly because there are already a lot of cool drummers out there. Also, in Chile is quite hard to live as a musician only, and being a designer is generally very time consuming.

Music has always attracted me in a lot of ways, especially metal music, from the variety of sounds and feelings that it transmits, to its imagery and how despite being a music genre that has been bashed by many, it still is a powerful and influential force in music and in society.

Ariela`s blog is predominantly green and grey, it also has a hint of orange in certain areas like in the titles of the posts. This is a pretty combination, although is a little bland, not really stimulating.
I also find the blog title rather odd, it’s “--“, a couple of dashes that don’t tell much about what the blog is about.

The links show the whole URL of each blog, so is quite uncomfortable to the eyes. They kind of force the reader to read and process more symbols that I need to know. The only link that has a normal name to identify it is “Teacher’s Blog”, so it doesn’t follow the way the other links are showed. They should all be showed in the same way.

I like the pictures she has chosen to represent her posts. They sum up quite well the general idea.
I specially enjoy the “best friend” post, since the picture is from Garfield and I like that cartoon. It’s also a very cute picture itself.

About Sir Ken Robinson's presentation...

Sir Ken Robinson talks about the importance of support de creativity in the kids. He speaks about how our culture, in general, teach us about the wrong concept of intelligence, putting some areas over another, like the musical area, o the artistic area.

He says that in a lot of cases the afraid to be wrong, stops the creativity, because the kids are so afraid to do o to say something wrong, o ridiculous, that they want to change, and tray to be like the others, losing their creativity.

Another important stuff that he says, is about the right support of the parents, because, if they don’t understand the creativity of their sons, and they just try to do that their sons, with specials gifts, became into a typical student, they just are stealing the creativity of their own kids.

Then, the presentation try to remove the concept of, what is really to be intelligent? And speaks about to consider the artistic skill like something really important and break the tradition that just the math intelligence o that kinds of intelligences are better that the artistic one and all the kind of intelligences and skills related with art, music, or dance.

Me as a teacher

I think Ken Robinson's approach on education is quite interesting and dead certain. Schools around the globe stick to the traditional way of learning that he speaks about, although he's note entirely right. There are exceptions, schools where creativity and non traditional skills and careers are encouraged, schools where dance, handcrafts and diverse arts are common subjects.

I know of a very special case where a religion teacher from my school used to impart classes too. It was a school where no bells rang to let the students know the classes had started and the recess was over, there was no inspectors, and if there was they didn't told any students to go to the classroom, because they went because of their own will.

Every student knew when the classes started and where they were. There was a strong sense of interest. Students had true interest on their classes, and that's why they attended, not because someone told them they had to.

So this school didn't exactly encouraged non traditional subjects, but it certainly had a different and much more free way develop themselves in a friendly environment and teaching.

I agree with Ken Robinson, school is boring, limitating, not friendly for everyone and with a very stif scheme of teaching. In general school kind of put your mind to sleep and saves the energy that children have for recess time.

I don’t really have a best friend. I can’t name just one, they are all very important to me.

I’ve met some of my friends since 1993 (that’s sixteen years!), others since 2001, and others are quite recent. I’ve met the last ones in college between 2006 and 2009.

My friends and I have in common a very relaxed personality. It’s not the case of everyone but I don’t enjoy spending time, working or having arguments with neurotic people.

What makes us different is that we all come from different places and almost each of my friends are very unique in the way that they don’t match with what is considered a “normal” stereotype.

I like them because they don’t have second interests when it comes to our friendship, they are just loyal people, and I do my best to be the same to them.

We all study or live in distant places but occasionally we go out to a pub together or gather in a house to party. It’s always fun because we don’t really see each other much because of college and other commitments, so we meet more often in the summer.

Yes I have fell out with one of my friends once. I still think it was a silly argument but when I think it through I realize that I made an inappropriate question…

A great experience was when we recently decided to throw a surprise party for one of my friends, Mauricio. After a long wait everything was set up and another friend distracted Mauricio for hours to finally lead him to his own house where we all where.

We had a blast and the party was a success except for some minor details.

The Fighter’s Generation is one of my favourite websites. It is a site dedicated to the fighting game world and it was founded by F. Yagami about 5 years ago.

I discovered it about 2 years ago when searching for a decent fighting games source to instruct my self about the then newest installment of The King of Fighters franchise, the King of Fighters XI.

I visit it quite often because to see news related to The King of Fighters XII, which is coming out this year and has created a lot of expectations in the old fans because of the game keeping 2D graphics, and in new fans because of the game is superb look.

The developers first drew every character's moves, then transfered the drawings to the computer and modeled them using a 3D modeling program, and finally drew the renders obtained from the computer on paper and painted every frame of the game by hand. The result is beautiful.

I like The Fighter’s Generation because it’s constantly updated with interesting news of the fighting game world, from world class tournaments to new action figures of the characters in the games. Every new trailer, gameplay footage and cool combo videos are uploaded or linked, so for me it’s quite entertaining.

If you happen to like fighting games from all kinds, I strongly recommend this site.

A song I really like is Norther’s “Death Unlimited”. Norther is a finnish band that belongs to a music genre that hasn’t been explired a lot, which could be described as power metal with harsh vocals, although the bands that play this way insert elements from a lot of other metal genres.

I first heard the song a month or so ago, I didn’t even know Norther existed, I’m not really sure why. I didn’t really care for it at first, it was a typical metal, very good, but typical. I ended up enjoying some of their other songs a lot more.

So surfing YouTube some weeks ago I recalled that Death Unlimited had a video, so I decided to watch it again just to give the song another chance, and I this time I got more into it. Then on the right side of the video there was a link with the same video including lyrics. At that moment I was very interested in what the song said and this guy (vocalist) screams a lot so I didn’t quite understand him.

So know I love the song even more, because it ended up being almost an epitome of what metal is, or at least what I like it to be. The vocalist speaks about death and being death, but not referring to it. Instead he sings as if he was indeed the personification of death, I think.

So this guy is screaming as he was the Grim Reaper or something, with a very cool rhythm section and awesome guitar solos accompanying it. It’s fury.

The lyrics are very powerful, at times it makes you think he really is death it self.

Here are the lyrics:

Death Unlimited

Saatana, vittu perkele

Welcome to my world of death and pain
Oh it drives you so insane
I am no blast from the past
Because I'm death and I'm everlast

I'm the future breed, evil and mean
A fucking killing machine
No-one will stay alive and see
They all will die and join me

Fuck you and die, Living is so damn painful
It's coll to be dead and grateful
Nothing can hurt you anymore
Anyhow death is so much more

You can just kill, kill and kill
Just kill em all if you will
Do you still wanna stay alive
Or join me by my side

(Chorus:)
I am the Death Unlimited
And death is all I have to give
I'll tell you the meaning of life
It's not to live but to die
I am the Death Unlimited
And death is all I have to give
Let me spill your sweet blood
And to you I am god

Can you feel the dark side calling
It's useless to resist
Give in to fear, hate and anger
Then life won't take your time any longer

Only I am by your side
Soon your life is gone
And that I adore

(Chorus x3)

I don’t really have a favourite designer, but as today this is for sure one I really admire, because of his talent, perseverance and passion.

Joshua M. Smith is a designer from Orlando, Florida, in the U.S.A., he discovered his passion for illustration during college, while working on a proyect for Endeavor Snowboards.

He had plenty of trouble figuring out where he wanted to go, design style wise. Since then he has been devoted to his own design studio Hydro74, which has grown to meet the high and changing standards of the market as well as cultivating its own rich style.

He has works related to digital imaging, typography, type treatments, print, actions sports and apparel development. This works has spread into many formats, like t-shirts, boards, posters, and his own typefaces.

Some of his many clients include Nike, ESPN, Lucas Films, Quicksilver, Vans, Reef, Atlantic Records and Maxim Magazine.

I like him because his designs amaze me, and are an inspiration to my current development as a designer. I find his overall work extremely attractive in any of the ares he works in.

I don’t think he’s the best, but he certainly knows what he is doing. His work is stunning, incredibly detailed in some cases, and he just bets the job done. Bottom line, he’s awesome.

The MP3 (or MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 if you like, though I doubt it), it’s a digital audio encoding format for data compression; it’s used largely around the globe by thousands of internet users to listen to a lot of music freely. It’s my favouite piece of technology because, although controversial (because of legal rights issues), I like the fact that it allows me and a lots of people to listen to our favouite artists, even though we are stealing from them.

The reason why it’s so popular it’s because of it compression abilities, which are, comparatively to other formats, quite great.
For example, an MP3 file created using the setting of 128 Kbit/s will result on a file that is about a one 10th of the size an original CD audio file. But if you want to hear your favourite music the right way using MP3 files, make sure to download files created with the 320 Kbit/s setting.

I’ve used the MP3 format since 2005 though it can’t really be acquired. It’s a format used even in open source peer to peer software.

I listen to MP3 audio files everyday, it just feels weird taking the subway in the morning, or going back home without listening to music. So for that I have an MP3 player, which only stores about 256 MB of data, but I don’t really need more for such a short period of time, even though I miss my old 1 GB MP3 player, but it broke.
I also listen to the majority of MP3 files at home on my computer, so to me this format is really helpful because, as most people do, I love music.

Life without wouldn’t be that much different because there are so many formats to choose from that one of those would take the place as the most popular one, and new technologies would be thought in terms of it.

Algarrobo is a place in Chile located in Región de Valparaíso. It’s a place I usually visit some, or a lot of days during summer, depending on what comes up.

So the last time I went there was this summer of 2009. At first I went with my sister and a friend to escape the heat, air and the overall feel that Santiago gives at that time of the year. It was a peaceful time really, filled with long walks and longs drives near the sea.
At the house there you have everything you need to relax and get out of the routine: the beach nearby, a nice weather (not to hot, not too cold), a cool forest to go to, arcades to play with, and other places to visit in a few minutes or an hour. You can walk to them (it’s a nice exercise), or drive to them. Anyway is ok.
Some days after our arrival to Algarrobo we had visitors over, five more friends of mine came over and it was a lot of fun. Since these friends are from the school I went to, it was like being in school again but with no responsibilities, just enjoying ourselves and remembering good times.

I like this place because it’s peaceful, and with the right company, it gives you everything you need to relax and forget about bothering things. Also, my grandma lives there so I get to spend time with her too, which is really pleasant.

I think this site is really useful for starter and medium level people that wish to learn more about how English language is spoken around the world and in different situations. The site leads you to a lot of different topics from which to inform your self, I looked at the quizzes (which are very varied), the Flatmates (which I found very useful and very easy to understand). They have a story ongoing to that should keep someone entertained and learning ant the same time. I also checked out Grammar, Vocabulary and Pronunciation which is very cool as it has many options from where to look at this topics, like The Teacher, Sounds of English an Words in the News, a section that acumulates many audio clips to listen every time someone wants to.

I do have a critic, the site might have too many options at some point into exploring it. It gives options over and over again and at the same time there are too many of them in every page. That might get some people lost if they are not very familiar with these type of websites, that’s why I think it’d be very complicated for an starter in English.

There are key elements in this site that, in my opinion should be highlighted as things top do first, for example, pronunciation, and listening tests. But overall I think it’s very well put together, at least I understand it, but I still you can get a little confused. It should be clearer where everything is instead of “burying” so many options behind every menu.

My name is Juan Pablo, I'm a graphic design student at Universidad de Chile. I enjoy illustration and typography art, both areas in which I would like to develop a decent ability . Since an early age I've loved to draw, and I intent to pursue my way on graphic design through it.

English has always been a formidable tool to open many doors, like communicating with people from all around the world, specially in this time of the expansion of the Web 2.0, meaning social networking websites which allow for an incredible exchange of culture, which spawns music, food, places, religions, views of life and all kind of experiences.

I'm a big fan of music, I enjoy Rock, Pop an Metal.

In this class I hope to get back on track in this language, specially in terms of pronunciation. But overall I hope to learn more and just get better.
