An animation assignment I did during my first year studying at the NCCA. The theme I had to base the story around was 'I wasn't expecting that!' Rig is the NCCA BillyBob rig.

In my Visual Studies classes at the NCCA we were often required to draw quickly to capture the 'essence' of a pose, rather than details. Being able to abstract the core elements of a pose is an invaluable skill for animation when understanding the weight, form, and physicality of a character 's positions can drastically alter the final movement in a scene. These are one-minute drawings of our model in several dynamic positions.

Drawing from a life model is also very useful for visualising key poses of an animation. I requested an enthusiastic, confident walk and a sneak from our male model which I used for the following sketches.

The above exercises were using ideas from the excellent book 'Force' by Michael D. Mattesi. I highly recommend this book as an instructional guide to adding dynamism to your life drawing and also just something to refer to now and again to add experimentation to your drawing style.
