In 1935, DC Comics founder Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson published New Fun No. 1, the first comic book with all-new, original material—at a time when comic books were mere repositories for the castoffs of the newspaper strips. What was initially considered to be disposable media for children was well on its way to becoming the mythology of our time—the 20th century’s answer to Atlas or Zorro. More than 40,000 comic books later, in honor of the publisher’s 75th anniversary, TASCHEN has produced the single most comprehensive book on DC Comics, in an XL edition even Superman might have trouble lifting. More than 2,000 images—covers and interiors, original illustrations, photographs, film stills, and collectibles—are reproduced using the latest technology to bring the story lines, the characters, and their creators to vibrant life as they’ve never been seen before. Telling the tales behind the tomes is 38-year DC veteran Paul Levitz, whose in-depth essays trace the company’s history, from its pulp origins through to the future of digital publishing.

Year-by-year timelines that fold out to nearly four feet and biographies of the legends who built DC make this an invaluable reference for any comic book fan.

Hardcover, 29 x 39.5 cm (11.4 x 15.6 in.), 720 pages | $200.00

Sven MILCENT & the Utopik Design Lab have done it! They’ve taken our entire collected evolution of cup-making and holding of drink history and combined it into one cup. One cup to hold them all. This is “One Glass for Every Drink” and it’s made to work for everyone. It of course tends to the four main glass-specific types of drink: water, cognac, wine, and champagne. It uses the same head and a different base for each of these. Sounds lovely doesn’t it? Let’s have a sip or two and talk about it.

This isn’t the first interchangeable base cup we’ve had here on Yanko, and it wont be the last. It’s a fantastic idea and deserving of a slew of attempts at it in order to make it perfect. Here’s one with some really fabulous ideas, and rather elegant ones if I do say so myself.

And while we’re at it, I’ve got to say that my favorite drink glass in the world must be the snifter – looked after here closely by that cognac glass on it’s side. Very sassy. Very nice. Very on it’s side where it definitely aught to be, havin a great time.

A limited edition Rizla packet was designed to be given out at festivals and night clubs. The design evokes the late night theme of the events by using glow in the dark ink, this gave the brand more stand out within the environments in which it was distributed.

A fluorescent nu-rave pack design was created as a nod to current club culture.

I came across Steven Bonner work and it's totally worth having a look at it. Just awesome.

Read what he says about his work:

During my time in the creative industries I've worn a lot of hats, but those are the names I've felt most comfortable with. Whether I'm sole designer or directing, what I do can be broken down using one or more of those titles.

I have a conceptual approach to everything I do born from a love of bold and memorable images. I started freelancing under the name Also Known As in January 2009 and it's worked out pretty well so far, working on overflow & pitch projects for design agencies across the UK as well as for private clients worldwide. Every project is an opportunity to do the best work I've ever done.

My work has been featured across the web, in print, and in books such as Custom Kicks, 1001 Restaurant Bar & Café Graphics, Vormator: Elements of Design, and Black & White Freedrawings."

As an illustrator he is represented by NB Illustration in London.

PIXEL IT. A poster with an alterable structure to display messages - a visually professional and attention grabbing alternative to messy blackboard writings.“Pixel It” consists of two layers of paper. Cuts on the white outer layer allow the user to fold parts out and therefore create a "Pixel-Structure" by showing the coloured layer underneath.

Design studio TO-GENKYO proposes a new method of tracking a foods expiration date by using a universally recognizable visual. Over the last year or so Japan had been struck by a number of scandals involving food companies tampering with expiration dates. The new design keeps people honest by changing colors based on the level of ammonia the food emits as it ages. After it has passed its expiration date the barcode is no longer readable, making it impossible to sell.

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination.
Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic.
Authenticity is invaluable; originality is not-existent.
And don't bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always reme, ber what Jean-Luc Godard said: "It's not where you take things from - It's where you take them to."

Something I don't know

Today I went to my brother’s place. He is really into fishing. He likes to go fishing on the lake on his boat every weekend. Today he tried to fix his boat and paint it again. He referred me to a blog about boat paint online. I checked it out, it seems nice. I’ll probably drop by there for more.
