Last month I’ve made a vibrant call to “Close the Incubators and Accelerators, and Open FabLabs and MakerSpaces instead”, simply because Africa needs more people with the skills to fabricate something than additional people with oratory prowess.

Détruire/reconstruire
Our trip wouldn’t be possible without the full support of our new Algerian friends.
ShellMates Club from ESI is the first non-profit technical organization dedicated to networks and web security in Algeria. Supported by the wise Association Universitaire de la Francophonie, OpenMindsClub from USTHB organizes Linux Install Party and offers various trainings to students.
Both of them gathers energetic and talented students, who are curious about how technologies can be used for innovative purpose. They did a SUPER GREAT job to co-organize JerrySchool with us and mobilize more than one hundred students from their campus! BIG UP =D
As soon as we arrive, the Club Scientifique de l’ESI asks us if they can make a Jerry even before the launching of JerrySchool. Engaged in promoting innovation, they organized several startup weekends in Algiers.
The problem they are facing: Campus connection system is limited to 600Mo/day/student.
They rise a challenge for Jerry : Using the software CNTML to add a proxy to mutualise and divide up the quotas between students of the club.
The president of the club, Mehdi, becomes the SCRUM master and boosts the 12 members to collaborate to make their Jerry CSE come true.
The particularity of this Jerry is to be sewed with fishing wire, a very useful user innovation we keep on Jerry’s wiki.
After hours of cutting sewing and coding, JerryCSE is turned on on Saturday afternoon 22nd. The 12 members are on FIRE when the screen lights on! It is really a great job chrikis!
Cant wait to see how other clubs will react when seeing your self-manage web access… ;)

Jerry can host more different types of components than a regular computer black box. Because there is more room to attach them inside.
We use end of life components anyone can find in old computers. To create a basic computer or server, you need a power supply, a motherboard and a hard drive. And Wifi is always fun if can find a router ;)

The growth of Jerry Family is now spreading to Algeria. We are pleased to welcome a new branch on the family tree: Salam Alikoum =)
Thanks to the precious help of JerryClan members of Shellmates & OpenMindsClub, we are launching Jerry School : 5 days of workshop during which volunteers make Jerrys to install free & open source softwares. These Jerry will give access to IT services for non-profit purpose.
We came to Algeria to facilitate the making of several Jerry by its future users.
During one week, we met students at Ecole Supérieure d’Informatique and Université des Sciences et de la Technologie Houari Boumediene to present them Jerry-School and issues about digital divide. We wanted to raise aweraness about the great potential given by their studies in computer science.
As most of us, they understand the impact of technologies on how we interact with the world and its people. But these tools are not yet thought for general interest. Students understand well they have a central role to build a fair digital society, but there are only a few inclusive tech projects lead by hacker ethic… Lets challenge this status quo together =)
That’s why we asked them how they would use a Jerry to help their clubs or to launch an innovative project. We are exploring together how to design ICT systems to sustain cultural and economic development.
The event preparation was organized on facebook & eventbrite. We didnt buy any electronics, only reuse brought by contributions, from Jerry Makers or from small business in Algiers.
First, makers discover how it is easy to self-manage their Jerry production thanks to SCRUM methodology. Features of the desired Jerry are declined into tasks. Each couple of person is responsible for the task. Each project owner present its vision of the future Jerry before launching the Sprints. At the end of each Sprint, the team checks the tasks done and learn how to progress faster for the next Sprint. It works way better than you can imagine. ;)
More news of this collective adventure very soon!

We are very happy to Jerry workshops start in Algiers: JERRY-SCHOOL.
Thanks to our devoted JerryClan, things are very well engaged to hack Jerrycans and to turn them into development booster by providing low cost infrastructure to innovative projects.
Welcome to join us from the 22nd here are the things you’ll bring to make and customize your Jerry. Please subscribe on EventBride.

Hope you are having a great time as us, we go to the playa =D
Lately we went to the monthly meeting of Linux Premier Samedi du Libre, organized by the Parisian association Parinux. You can go there to discover free software world and find help to install Linux Operation System on your computer. And meet passionate people is always interesting! =)
We had a great surprise to discover there the Emmabuntus crew. They work with Emmaüs, the famous French NGO dedicated to solidarity, lobbying and reuse against poverty, exclusion and poor-housing.
They developed a Xubuntu based Linux distribution for end-users which is dedicated to bring back to life old computers. So our two projects are complementary.
We started hanging together since then at the hacking party OpenBidouilleCamp and OpenWorldForum. It is so great to see talented engineers excited about making Jerrys and here is their first Baby Jerry!
Big Up to Hervé & Patrick who keep the Linux spirit opened !

You can download it here it is very easy to use! And please spread the word if you know people who need an appropriated OS for reuse/fair cybercafes and other low tech projects. =)
Venez rencontrer Jerry à l’openbidouillecamp:

“Bonjour,

Hello! The first Jerry was created 8 months ago and the first people engaged in the team are 24 years old. =)
Have you met Jerry??? =)
#pouetpouet

To make a Jerry, you need a jerrycan, a saw, zipper, string and needle to sew and elastics to attached the regular electronic components you put in a computer: harddrives, powersupply, motherboards…
At the moment, we are testing 2 asus AT5NM10T-1: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_CPU_on_Board/AT5NM10TI/
We can discuss by mail if you want: youandjerrycan@gmail.com =)
