I’m not a nail person because I work with my hands and I ruin all manicures in a matter of minutes. But I really liked how these colors blended together. Killed an hour in Sephora making gradients on my nails with Julep in Adrianna (green) and Bette (purple). I like how subtle it is. It also matches my Keds that also match my dentist’s office.
Excerpts from the Darrenkamp-Giorgio summer wedding in Lancaster, PA. Why I’m pointing a finger gun or trying to shock the groom, I don’t know (top). On s1e11 of “Arrested Development,” Lucille and Lindsay are turned away from a fancy dinner and forced to eat at Klimpy’s Family Restaurant. Lucille, visibly agitated, orders:
Lucille: “I’ll have the Ike and Tina Tuna.”
Waitress: “Plate or platter?”
Lucille: “I don’t understand the question and I won’t respond to it.”
This led thenewhotness to coin the phrase “Lucille List” to refer to things he doesn’t understand and doesn’t care to, like “Adventure Time, people who are super into horses, and open faced sandwiches.”
Everyone has a Lucille List. What’s on yours?Ooh, like this idea!

The birthday card my parents got for my little brother. Thank god, I thought I was the only one in the world that trolled him on his birthday.
A fish stall in Ilo-Ilo’s market. The high pitched raspy voice you hear over the murmuring of the crowd is the man who sold us the bangus fish. Our fishmonger was otherwise taciturn.
This was a short bumper for my tiny videocast Facts N’ Cheese. We’d try to shoot five unscripted episodes with different guests and cheeses. We drank for each episode, so every 4th or 5th episode in the series is really sloppy but hilarious. And so the joke, here, is that I have terrible whiskey breath and we kept having to cut on account of my belligerence.
Tomato confit.
For my birthday a couple years ago, someone had given me Eric Ripert’s book On the Line. I was just getting into cooking and didn’t know what I liked yet, but seafood was pretty far away from my regular diet. I flipped through the pages and gasped at the lobster, roe and monkfish. All things I couldn’t quite afford to liberally play with yet. A lot of these modern cookbooks save the garnish or larder recipes for the end, this is where I found tomato confit. I tried to smash the definition of this with duck confit in my head, it was hard for me to understand.
In the case of tomatoes, it’s not so much about the fat but the flavor and preservation. Here, I’ve broiled tomato quarters for eight minutes, then oven dried them at 240F for 30 to 45 minutes (until they were not goopy). You can take them farther to make tomato candy but I like a little bit of squish for my BLTs.
“Chawanmushi” egg custard with chicken broth, chicken and thyme.
This recipe for savory Japanese egg custard had been abandoned in a Chrome tab, minimized as a low priority because I just didn’t have the specialty ingredients. I’d read it from time to time, imagining what it would taste like with fishy broth. It hit me that I have the essential components at home if I would change the flavor profile! Instead of dashi, I infused chicken broth with thyme, rosemary and garlic. Whipped it into an egg mixture with hot pepper and strained it over some shredded chicken.
Into my makeshift bain-marie rice cooker and 8 minute later, I had a fluffy set custard. I sprinkled a little brown sugar on top and set it on fire. Cause, you know, that’s what I do.
Whoa, awesome! Thanks for the note :)
You guys, check out this Tumblr.
Broiled avocado with egg, lemon salt, parmesan cheese , cayenne pepper, and olive oil. Torched for extra drama.
I tried a version with egg white only and it was not as fun as poking the runny yolk above.
A spin on carbonara with hot coppa, Asiago, fusilli and whipped egg yolk.
Bon Apètit boasted “the silkiest” carbonara in this recipe. The shape of the fusilli hid a lot of the sauce in my version, so it may look sparse but the spice and cheese are all there!
Steamed egg with pork broth, chicken, butter and Appenzeller cheese.
I’m a huge fan of baked eggs. Ever since I watched Ina Garten pour butter and cream into a dish, I was sold. I was under the impression that this was the only way to bake eggs until I had the eggs en cocotte at Prune. Hidden under the soft, bubbling eggs were pieces of tender chicken. Over the years, I forgot the exact temperature and maybe skipped steps. I’d overcook the eggs while I experimented with new ingredients and would not exactly get it right with all of its moving parts.
Enter: a new method! Taking the ideas of steamed in-shell eggs and egg custards, I layered a ramekin with pork cracklins, chicken with a small well in the middle, homemade pork broth, an egg and butter to bring it all together. My rice cooker has a steam function, so I treated it like a bain-marie. After 6 minutes of wispy water vapor, I finished the final layer of Appenzeller cheese in the broiler.
Make sure you have lot’s of toast. The broth and soft steamed egg are like a meaty breakfast fondue!
A delightfully complicated roast cabbage.
Spicy coppa crisped then removed. Cabbage roasted in coppa fat and butter. Layer of toasted lavash bread, the cabbage, crumbled coppa, gorgonzola piccante, dill, cilantro, parmesan cheese and cayenne pepper.
Listen to this Lullatone song while you stare at the cabbage gif. Please.
Roasted red cabbage, fried egg, avocado, dandelion green chips, dill, parmesan cheese and cayenne pepper.
Tifamade’s roasted chou with egg and sushi rice has been bookmarked on my “to cook” list for a long time. I think I prefer the long cut of cabbage through the whole head instead of the wedge. If you like increased surface area of crispiness, go for the large slice. But if you like a little crisp on the edges but wilty juicy cabbage on the inside, then the wedge is the way to go.
Dandelion greens also lose their bitter bite when you roast them. They don’t take very long either because they are so svelte.
Toasted lavash bread with parmesan, cayenne pepper, dill and cilantro.
A package of lavash bread is a lot more than I expected. In an effort to eat it all before it spoils, I toasted sheets in the oven! It’s a little sturdier than papadum and thinner than pita chips. Dip test forthcoming…
Lavash bread from Sahadi’s can transform any leftovers into sandwich sushi.
A funny mix of carrot, cucumber, avocado, bresaola, pickles, salad, mushrooms and cheese.
All will weep at my future bloody marys and micheladas, spiked with homemade worcestershire sauce.
Transformed the fontina and scallion SCRATCH focaccia into split top buns for my adobo pulled pork and slaw.
View from the kitchen table at the lights in my kitchen, I.E. where beautiful food goes to die.
In the spirit of randomness, I thoroughly enjoy the daily focaccia at SCRATCH Bread. Last week, I picked up a squishy fresh loaf of blue cheese, hot pepper and scallion. I can eat gobs of this bread alone, piping hot from their native ovens around the corner from my house. In a fit of curiosity, I pressed it with miso mushrooms and Appenzeller cheese.
Akin to ice cream, marshmallows and whipped products in general — I know I’m paying a premium for air (see size comparison). But it is well placed and delicious air.
The last of the handmade tortillas had the honor of housing stringy pulled pork. They couldn’t hold together on their own, so I carefully stacked them (fold side down) in a pocket of foil that rested in the freezer for an hour. Fried in a shallow pool of medium heated oil, these taquitos were crispy and flakey.

Drum Machine Dating Service: Played on a real piano, in the middle of an electronic atmosphere! Her song was my favorite of them all – the atmospheric music felt very ethereal, as if I was entering another dimension. The piano was subtle behind this atmosphere, and its accompanying atmosphere built up in complexity as the song progressed.

“In The Memory” by The Shortsleeves, one of my favorite chiptune groups. The duo put out a new single for the track, which you can stream above. If you purchase the single, though, you can help fund the band’s first cassette.
The release includes studio versions for two tracks that were featured in The Shortsleeves’ live album last year — Jenn de la Vega, who makes up half of the group, has also posted a wicked “Street Perfect Piano version” that’s worth listening to if you’re into this lovely song.
And before I forget, tickets are now on sale for Blip Festival NYC — which Jenn helps organize — so jump on that. The partial lineup revealed so far includes Omodaka, Nullsleep, and George & Jonathan, and I’m sure the rest of the list is going to be killer, too. I wanna go sooooo bad.

I actually slept very little last night because I played Minecraft for about 8 hours when I got home.

Back in November of 2012 we were fortunate enough to collaborate with Double Fine on their annual “Amnesia Fortnight” internal prototyping game jam. In previous years, Double Fine would set aside two weeks for the company to break into small teams and work exclusively on new game ideas. This process had always been private, but this year company founder Tim Schafer decided to open the process up to the public and allow their fans to participate. We were asked to document the entire event and the result is one of the proudest achievements we’ve had as a company so far.
We released a video documenting each day of the two week dev process for ten in total, plus two extra videos covering the days leading up to the event and the aftermath that followed. That’s close to 5 hours of solid video coverage capturing the complete genesis of 5 brand new game IPs. This project was initially only available to backers of a special limited Humble bundle campaign, but now we’ve revisited the series to expand upon some of the episodes and create a definitive Blu-ray of the entire experience. Visit our project page for a list of what you get!
- $232M in profits were generated by Minecraft last year, but Mojang’s founders aren’t looking to go public any time soon according to a new Reuters report. Apparently, despite Notch’s $100 million windfall, these guys want to keep doing what they love without having to answer to new bosses, a major publisher, or outside investors. You can officially consider us jealous. source
A really cool update if you’ve seen our Story of Mojang documentary.
