    A wrap-up

So I am back home again. Feels good. I have slept some today, like to shifts with two hours each. I will call it a night soon. Again.

Everything has been great, really. On Wednesday I was rolled in to the operation theater at 11.30 a.m and rolled out about 1 p.m. I spent the night in E.R with hardly any sleep at all. Too much excitement and thoughts running through my head. I had some pain that was taken care of with morphine but other than that no other complications.  On Thursday I was up walking around in the corridors and today, Friday, I was sent home. I have had a lot of energy and I have been feeling overall great. Didn’t expect that, to be honest.

Well I do have some pain and my stomach is a bit out of order. I compare it with a hard drive that needs defrag. As soon as I drink some water or eat a spoonful of yoghurt I can feel it move and hear all the noise. Quite fun to listen to. I haven’t given it a lot of thought yet, but I did ask myself when I woke up after surgery Oh my god, what the eff have I done?! I still ask myself that, but I guess it’s more or less a normal reaction. Food is out of the question. I am allowed to eat liquid foods for one week, such as nutrition drinks, water, milk, juice and hot and cold soup. Having hard time to eat the 1,5 liter a day. Even 1,5 dl of yoghurt is difficult to eat.

Tomorrow I will rest and on Sunday I am going home to my parents to stay with them for a couple of weeks. Just don’t want to be alone during these critical weeks post surgery.

A couple of more pics added:

    Preparing again

Wednesday a week ago, minutes before the news "We don't have time for your surgery today, come back next week..."

Well, not preparing really. No need to. I have done all my emotional preparation and I just want it over and done with. I was supposed to be “floating” this week, but I haven’t entirely. I have sinned a bit. Today I had a fresh salad for lunch and last night I had some nice fish and shellfish soup. Nothing that have any effect on my weight-loss, really.

So with one day to go I am not nervous at all. No thoughts, no feelings. I managed to stay somewhat focused despite the setback last week, but now I feel as I am back in the game again. Things just can’t go wrong a sixth time. Right? (knock knock) So with this beeing said keep your fingers crossed. On Wednesday morning it happens.

Oh, please follow my journey on Facebook and be a fan of this life-changing event!

    Major setback…

I arrived at the hospital at 7 a.m. Surgery was due 1p.m. At 3p.m they tell me there’s no time to do my surgery today. One of the patients before me had some emergency complications and a surgery that normally takes 1-1.5 hrs took more than 4 hrs.

Shit happens, I know that. I am not upset with anyone. I just feel that I am so darn unlucky and I deserve more luck. More than this. This is the fifth time my surgery has been more or less postponed and each time that happens, I lose enthusiasm, goal and motivation. Today was by all means the worst of them all. I mean, there I was in the hospital, waiting for eight hours for them to call my name, dressed in scrubs with needles in my arms. And then this happens. It’s cruel. Darn cruel.

When talking to the staff about it I gave a calm impression and yes, I was calm. I understand that things happen that no one can control or change. The surgeons had run in to a difficult procedure that took a lot of time. As my mom said: “Well, think about how they maybe saved a life today.” Things do happen.

It’s just so darn unfair it has to happen to me all the time. The fifth time.  And now I was so close.

Instead I have to gather what’s left of my motivation and enthusiasm and try to focus on next Wednesday when I am scheduled for a new surgery. I don’t know how and if I can do that, to be honest. Perhaps it will be different in a couple of days. But now I just feel like the most unlucky man in the world.

So, surgery is not due March 10 anymore. Most likely March 17th with a little chance earlier than that.

    This sucks.

    Nightly countdown

Six hours to go. At 7 a.m I need to be at the hospital. What happens then is unknown. My guess is that surgery will be at some point before lunch. The procedure is said to take about an hour and a half and after that I will be kept for observation in E.R for a couple of hours. I should be, if everything goes well, sober by nightfall. Texts are welcome +46708381599.

I told my dad that if something happens he can have my DVD-player and computer. My TV will be nice in our Summer house. My mom will get my netbook. Or perhaps my sister. My brother in law can have my phone.

We laughed nervously both of us…

Time to die. Time to resurrect. More beautiful than ever!

Nah, I am not scared, nervous nor anxious. It is such a routine procedure it’s more or less impossible to fail. The fail will be on me afterwards if I cannot adopt to the new lifestyle. Hell will freeze over for that to happen.

So, I guess this will be my last post on this side. Tomorrow at some point there will be no more old Jesper – only a new Jesper. I will miss him. A bit. Not too much. And with Spring drawing nearer outside my window I feel it will be a good day to die on. And resurrect as a new man a couple of hours later.

    Time for metamorphosis…

    Distraction!

There is not better way to be distracted and keep your mind on other things than important things, than cleaning. I have now been doing this for the last six hours and I guess I will be finished soon (what? I am a bachelor living alone, it takes time to clean up all the dirty socks spread around the house).

Or I can do a Family Guy and call for distraction like this:

    My last day on Earth

I have been playing around with the idea of doing something special on this, the last day of my life. Like going cool places, like enjoying a good meal. But now I am most likely to spend the day cleaning my apartment instead. That will probably take the entire day. And when it comes to food and eating, I am not even hungry anymore. No cravings,  no nothing.

My friend Sofia had her surgery yesterday and I haven’t heard from her. I’ve sent her two messages, hope she is okay. We will meet tomorrow morning at the hospital. That kind of scares me. I mean, she might be suffering from regrets or other complications and how will that affect me? God I hope she is alright and everything went well.

I don’t regret staying home from work these two days but I would have preferred working last week (winter break). I think I might be catching a cold, my throat feels a bit nasty. Me staying home was simply a decision of not taking any risks of catching viruses, colds, flus, infections etc. I am after all commuting 1.4 hr on crowded trains with strangers and working with and around a hundred kids and teenagers. Any kind of infection in my body would risk the surgery to be postponed and I don’t want that now.

I wonder if I will sleep tonight. Probably not. I am that kind of person who needs a calm mind when going to bed in order to sleep. So expect a couple of more posts before the night is over.

So, my last day on Earth. Tomorrow I will be reborn. A new life will start.

    Awesome.

    Report #5 – T minus two days

To be honest I still haven’t thought a lot about it. Today is Sunday (evening) and I have Monday and Tuesday to go. Early Wednesday morning I am expected at the hospital, 7 a.m. So that makes it two full days before my life-changing procedure – a gastric bypass surgery. But I feel…nothing. Perhaps that’s a good sign. Right? Or perhaps I am just unruffled about it.

This weekend has been pretty tough food-wise. I have cheated again but haven’t gained any weight. Cheating as in eating something different than low calorie shakes. Like boiled broccoli and some whole-wheat pasta. I haven’t lost anymore weight though, possibly because I haven’t been moving around that much. Mostly been at home watching telly, sitting by my computer and doing laundry and cleaning.

So, I feel too little to really blog about it, which is quite sad. I guess it will be different tomorrow and on Tuesday, the closer to surgery day I get. Or at least after the surgery when the tough adaption period arrives.

    Let’s just wait and see.

    Going down

I continue to lose weight even if it’s going a bit slower now. I guess that the 7,5km of hardcore walking in Stockholm had some effect. Tonight I will cheat again: a small portion of white healthy fish and broccoli. As much calories as in a low-cal shake. The two weeks of floating is apparently for weight-loss only and has nothing to do with whether the food is solid or not. They recommend low-cal shakes for fast weight-loss though. And since I am going down fast I will cheat with no regret tonight. My last time. Honestly. I swear

    Stats as of today:

My list of pros and cons – is it worth it?

It's the picture of Italian ice-cream in a sho...
    Image via Wikipedia

With five days to go I am thinking a lot. Well, today is a good day and that’s probably thanks to the weather, but as soon as I get a couple of minutes where I am passive, I start to think about what’s coming. Here’s a list I did a couple of nights ago when I couldn’t sleep. It’s a list of my pros and cons with this life-changing procedure.

    CONS

    • I won’t be able to eat as much as I have done before
    • There are foods I won’t be able to eat at all, such as very fat and sweet food. I love ice-cream…
    • My greatest pleasure with traveling around the world has always been to try the local food. I am worried I won’t be able to enjoy this anymore.
    • Eating has also been a substitute for something else. Now I need to find something else to fill those holes.
    • I have trouble organizing my life and after surgery this will be vital
    • I will have to go through a surgery and all that comes with that, including the risks.
    • It will be costly to buy new clothes…

Is it worth it? Well, you tell me…

    PROS

    • I will lose weight fast
    • I will have to buy new clothes
    • I will start to like myself and the way I look
    • People around me won’t be looking at me as if I am some kind of monster
    • I will be able to do sports
    • I will be able to tie my shoes
    • I will be able to hike in the mountains like when I was a kid
    • I will be able to do many long rides with my bike to discover new places
    • I will be able to travel on planes without asking for extra seat-belt and to use the seat-table without my belly pushing it up
    • I will be able to ski
    • I will get more energy, better moods and stamina
    • I will enjoy going out to socialize
    • I will be able to spend my summers topless, without covering my upper body with shirts
    • I might find love…
    • I will get energy to take better care about myself
    • I will recover from sleep apnea
    • I might stop snoring
    • I will be able to sit in any chair not having to be afraid of breaking it
    • I will be able to not having to worry about my weight anymore (not that I did before…but…)
    • I will probably recover from my depression
    • I will feel good about myself when I look into the mirror
    • I will be able to dance
    • I will be able to wear cool and modern clothing
    • I will be able to love life again…

So, again, is it worth it?

Oh, forgot. I lost one more kilo since two days ago…

    Simple document collaboration with TypeWith.me

Sometimes you just want to type something fast. And you want to type something fast together with others. Well, Google Docs is good for that purpose. But sometimes you just want something even easier and on the go. To get the most out of GDocs all collaborators more or less need a Google account. With TypeWith.me it’s different. And easier. And faster. And simpler. You don’t even need to register. Create, invite and off you go.

    Piece of cake!

Set up your homework, assignments and projects with Threadbox

Threadbox is just now out in a beta version and might be more known as Cc:Betty. The new launch today brought together with a new name also a shipload new features for collaboration. This is what Google Wave could have been if they wouldn’t have made things so complicated for themselves. Really. This is so easy and basic even kids can use it – and that’s why it will be perfect in educational use.

I decided to just record a screen-cast of Threadbox with examples on how you can use this extremely useful tool together with your students. This includes homework, group assignments and study groups. Unfortunately while playing around with Threadbox, it stopped working correctly but I assume it will be up and running very soon.

Mobile phones in teaching – a little guide on the way

Most teachers find mobile phones being a distraction in a classroom situation and hence would prefer to not seeing them at all. I am of a different opinion. Instead of banning a piece of high-tech equipment that probably every student has, we should use them instead in our teaching.

In Sweden the debate over kids wearing hats in the classroom has always been a question of teacher generations and it is still being debated as we speak. There are teachers who rather focus on what clothing their students wear instead on teaching. One would think that a teacher above all should pick his or her fight better. Unnecessary arguing over a piece of fabric that is attached to someone’s head is nothing but a desperate practice of declining authority and feeling of lost respect. Well, it’s for sure that you will never gain any respect by turning hats into a fight with a student.
Hats and mobile phones cannot be compared in terms of utilization. But the phenomena can indeed. Most of the hat-wearing students are boys and the hat itself is a part of their personality, a part of their whole outfit, as it were. The mobile phone is a part of everyone’s personality and we all know that we more or less are dependent on our phones nowadays. Even those of us who can remember the days when there were no mobile phones (“If we survived without them back then we can survive without them now!”). Well, things change and the world change. It’s time for school to change as well.
All of my students have a mobile phone. Good. Some of them have smartphones. Even better. There are handsets that are of better use than others in mobile learning but I give it a couple of more years before everyone has a smartphone. Also, not everyone have a phone with free Internet plans but again, they all will have very soon.
In a couple of years all my students will have these mini computers in their pockets. Computers that you can use for calling people, texting, browsing the Internet, recording video and audio, playing music and video, tracking your location and so on. These little gadgets are in a couple of ways more competent than basic desktop or laptop computers. The best part of this is that they  don’t cost your school a penny – students have them anyway. Not using them would be a mistake, really.
So in the best of worlds, how can you use mobile phones for teaching? Here are a couple of suggestions and ideas. Note that some of these might not be possible until all your students have smartphones and a good price plan for Internet usage. But as I said, let’s give it a couple of years.
    • Mathematics: I already see students using the built in calculators on their phones. Most of my Maths colleagues have no problem with this and even the most basic phone have a decent calculator. More advanced smartphones such as Apple and Android have even more advanced calculators suitable for complicated calculations and they support third party applications with more features.
    • MMS and SMS: There are plenty of services that offers educators the chance to send detailed text messages to their students. These can include images, documents, audio, links, video etc. Why not have your students receive text messages with homework information and instructions? Glossary? Assignments? Students can also report and “hand in” homework and assignments via texting.
    • GPS: All modern smartphones have GPS tracking today. Why not go on a field trip tracking your route and later include it in a detailed field trip assignment? Google’s own My Tracks lets an Android phone do this and save to a Google Docs document for later viewing. You can even trace distance, altitude, speed and so on.
    • Video blogging: Bambuser, QikUstream – three great free services that let’s you broadcast directly from your phone on multiple platforms. You can use it yourself to video blog today’s homework or assignments or let your student video blog themselves. Create lessons that can be accessed both from a computer’s web browser or from any Internet connected mobile phone. Students can even download them to save in their own handsets.
    • Audio blogging: Same functions as video blogging but without the video. Produce podcasts for downloading to phones or to stream via the Internet.
    • Twitter: All phones with Internet access can log in to Twitter’s mobile interface.
    • Images: Document with images. Upload and share on a class blog.
    And much more…
The only thing that prevents you from using mobile phones in your teaching is really you, yourself as a teacher. There are plenty of educators who already have implemented mobile phones in their teaching and develop new ways of using them. Do a search on Twitter and your favorite search tool and see for yourself. Start with #mlearning or #mobilelearning.
Now, let’s hurry! We have a lot to catch up on before the future is hopelessly too far ahead of us!

    “Precious” from a teacher’s perspective

Once every decade or so comes a movie that completely shakes my world. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does I am left with weeks of thinking and contemplation. These movies usually have such a great effect on me that I change in some way and “Precious” wasn’t an exception. It made me see possibilities with my job as a teacher and hope with my life as an obese. But I know my life isn’t close to be comparable with the main character, Precious.

What really caught me in this movie was apart from the hellish life Precious leads, the role that her teacher played. I hear Swedish teachers complain every day about how their job is changing. From being a teacher to being a doctor, social worker, parent, shrink and psychologist. I like that about being a teacher and it’s clear that being a teacher today is being all those things. I like to call it “being a human”. You simply can’t teach a kid who has more sinister thoughts on his or her mind than counting numbers or reading boring books. In order to learn we all need to stay focused on the learning and if you feel like crap inside, you won’t learn a thing. I feel that teachers often miss this and expect our kids to learn all the time.

Precious is like the worst student ever, from a teacher’s point of view. She can’t read, she is bullied, she gets pregnant for the second time (by her father), she lives in a broken home with an unemployed mother who lives on welfare, she is obese, she has very low self esteem and she think she is useless. Teachers normally don’t like these students because they bring problems and a lot of work. If teachers can chose their own students they would all be totally opposite from Precious. I know I might generalize things now, but this is the feeling I get anyway and it makes me scared as hell. The truth is that we probably have one student or more in every class that can be compared with Precious and I fear these kids are getting more every day.

The teacher is “Precious” has a heart. She takes on Precious and put her heart in soul in her relationship with the young girl. The result: she probably saves Precious’ life. Being a teacher isn’t what it used to be. If you haven’t realized this you need to if you want to stay teacher and develop as a teacher. It is about being human. It is about being a shrink, a parent, a social worker – you name it! And this is also the beauty of being a teacher. You can mean the world to your students. You can save lives. You can be the difference.

The question is: are you willing to do all this, you teacher?

The second question is: well, should you?

If you answer yes to these questions I am happy for you and your students. If you answer no… Well…I won’t even comment on that…

Should mobile phones be banned in the classroom? Heck no!

PHS Japan 1997-2003 (Willcom, NTT DoCoMo, ASTEL)

    Image via Wikipedia

Over at my favorite social network Fluther there is a discussion going on whether mobile phones should be allowed in classrooms. There are about 15 replies to the discussion so far and not a single reply is in favor of the idea. It made me think and I posted the following reply:

Of course they should and of course schools and teachers should find a way to use them in education. Every student has one – a piece of high-tech with unlimited possibilities. Schools and teachers have always been late adopting new technology and modernizing their teaching. It’s time to change that. We must change that. We need to keep up with the rest of the world. I mean, if you can use your mobile as flight tickets on airplanes, to buy grocery in the supermarket, why can’t you use it for teaching? Of course you can.

It’s not the kids that are distracting our teaching with their phones – it’s we the teachers who fail to meet our kids at their level in their world. We fail to see beyond traditional teaching and we lack imagination. I say, use the tools you have access to and these fine pieces of high-tech don’t cost you or the school a penny. They all have them anyway! Beautiful!

No one has responded yet but I have a feeling the discussion will go on for some time. And when you think about it isn’t it amazing that we haven’t started using mobile phones for real in our teaching? We don’t have to pay for these high-tech mini-computers, they are all free and everyone has one. We can spend hundreds of thousands on computers for our schools but we miss the little pocket computers everyone is already carrying. Now, it’s insane in a way, isn’t it?

As you perhaps know I will be on a sick-leave for about four weeks. I will on March 10 have a gastric bypass surgery and it is followed by four weeks of leave from work. This will give me a lot of time for blogging, researching and do things I haven’t had time doing so expect an increase of activity here at The Teacher Chronicles.

I will use a Facebook page as a blog where I will write notes, post photos and videos, and communicate with those friends and strangers who wish to join me on my great journey towards a new life. Feel free to drop by and support me in this great adventure.

Babylon – Online dictionary on your desktop

Babylon brags and says that they offers the most powerful and easy-to-use translation tool ever. I haven’t decided yet if I should agree with them or not, but one things’s for sure: it is easy to use. And it is also free. After installing Babylon (version 8 ) you get a little window on your desktop where you can put in words and phrases and Babylon translate for you. It even comes with audio translation so you can listen to the translated words. Now this works so so, the female voice tries its best to read out Swedish words, but the English words are totally flawless as expected.

Babylon gathers its information from over 1,500 online dictionaries, encyclopedias and wikis and some 75 languages. There is also a paid version but I haven’t been able to see what the differences are between the paid and the free version. Which is a good thing, I guess. The company also specialize in language courses as you probably know, but I have no experience of these.

Babylon translation tool is indeed easy to use and have more features than for instance Google Translate. Babylon seems more student friendly and isn’t only about cutting and pasting. The desktop client makes it easy to use for when working in other applications than Internet browsers and is a handy aid for writing essays in any word processor. Do I recommend Babylon? Well, I guess I do if you are willing to install this little piece of software. And Babylon do provide you with good information and it is quite fast as well. What I would like though is that the app also provided more extensive grammatical information.

Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company gets improved media streams

    This is UR:

With Swedish Television and Swedish Radio, Sveriges Utbildningsradio AB (Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company), comprise the main core of Sweden’s public service, i.e. radio and television serving the general public.

UR’s mandate is to produce educational and general knowledge programmes for pre-schools, primary and secondary schools and sixth form colleges or high schools. We are the only company in Sweden operating in multimedia – with production of television and radio programmes, websites, books and other publishing products. An important feature of UR is the production of programmes for ethnic minorities and for disability groups. UR has media educationalists stationed in various parts of the country, to inspire and support those using the various forms of media in teaching.

Our programmes are transmitted on the two main channels, SR (Swedish Radio) and SVT (SwedishTelevision), as well as on Children’s Channel and Knowledge Channel which we operate jointly with Swedish Television. Our programmes are intended first and foremost for pre-, primary and secondary schools, sixth form colleges/high schools, adult education and higher education.

What we offer is to be easily accessible and of high quality; our aim is to be at the spearhead of pedagogy.

A great resource, but up till now very limited for classroom use. Their video streams and TV has for long been hopelessly outdated with its windows media streams in low resolutions. But things are happening as UR introduces the new UR Play service and now it is really starting to look promising. UR has always been producing high quality TV and radio for educational use and now Swedish teachers can access a growing library of educational programs to show in their classrooms. I applaud thee, UR!

Sony USB Media Player SMP-U10 - First impression

My DVD player broke down and I was meaning to get a new one. Instead Iaid eyes on this: a cheap little black box for USB media. I paid $60 at my lokal retailer and it does exactly what it says to do. It plays my media files from a USB stick.

The best part is that it plays vob files and this means that you don't have to burn them down onto DVDs. Just copy to your USB stick and off you go. Easy but also limitied when it comes to features. Since it doesn't work like a DVD you have no use of menus and different options for sound, subtitles etc. That is a minus, indeed.

It also plays Divx/Xvid but if you want subtitles they need to be included in the avi file. As far as I know it doesn't read stand-alone sub files.
The photo viewing is a bit dodgy and slow. Music playing is basic but I haven't played much music on it yet.

The audio is overall quite great, sometimes even better than my digital TV and DVDs. The speakers on my LG plasma screen are quite rubbish, but I feel that the sound comes out much better via this box than from any other resource I have tired so far.

For the price, this is a neat addition if you don't have a media computer connected to your telly or just want to easily play DivX movies or show off your lates photos. Worth the $60? Well, I guess it is. If Sony releases a firmware with more file support and improved UI it will definately be worth it.

    Well done, Oscar!

So I was wrong. Thank god! No Best Picture for "Avatar" and that sure establish more respect for the Academy. However, winning Cinematography is a bit of a LOL - I mean, what cinematography? It was all made with computers! "Avatar" is the boyband version of films - those who think it deserves Best Picture are teenagers who would never pay to see something different than mainstream flicks. It's pure flirting with the audience, no brain, no substance. Of course I liked it myself, but it still isn't the best movie of 2009.

I liked "The Hurt Locker" but I liked "Precious" more. Mo'nique is well worthy the golden man for her work and so is the brilliant Christoph Waltz for his amazing performance. One thing is clear though: The Academy still has a long way before it can give a movie about obese and tragic black Americans what it deserves - it's more important to "celebrate and support the armed forces abroad who fight for their country". That's probably why well produced war movies about US forces always will have a slot open among the nominees.

Here in Sweden "Avatar" was screened in every city with a movie theater. "Precious" only went up in the bigger cities in a couple of theaters. Even here it is considered to be a small and undergroundy movie, which is a shame. Everyone should see it.

    Avatar born on Linux

Avatar was revolutionary. It was legendary. At my hometown of Kolkata alone, it made all the multiplexes to upgrade to 3-D vision glasses and facilitated the opening of many iMax theaters at unexpected locations across the country. But in-spite of all the commercial advertisement, there are some facts related to Avatar which went unheard.

    avatar-poster

Did you all know, Avatar used graphics designed by a four time Academy Award winning visual effects facility based at New Zealand. It has done graphics for X-Men, did it for I Robot and now, it has also done it for Avatar.

To my surprise, the company uses all non-windows software to achieve all these cutting edge graphics. The systems used to render these graphics were all using RHEL as their OS and were all HP Blade server clusters. All these systems are 64 bit and the cluster at Weta Digital is one of the world’s largest Linux clusters. It is ranked #193 amongst the top 500 supercomputers of the world with processing capabilities of 10 Gigaflops.

It is great to know that most of the software used to render these graphics were all Linux software like SoftImage, CompTime, Cine-Paint etc.

When social on the social web goes too far

Today Sweden's newspaper Dagens Nyheter published an article about the segregated Stockholm. It was a sinister read and should have been a wake-up call. The commenting feature was flooded by people flaming and spreading racist propaganda and linking to pages  that outed convicts and criminals. The comment feature was during the afternoon disabled due to this.

As I have said many times earlier, the social web is sometimes going too far. When it works, it is great, but when people who still think that social on the web is different from social in reality, we need to change the way we see the social web. Perhaps there was a difference between the social web and the social reality a couple of years  ago, but that's not the situation anymore. Now I am afraid that the Internet rudeness and immorality will spread to move outside the web and in to our society.

Only one step away from loving Evernote

Image representing Evernote as depicted in Cru...

    Image via CrunchBase

Even if I hate the new version of Evernote desktop app, there is only one thing that keeps me from using it more frequently and loving it. The built in screen shot feature is the best ever, BUT there is no easy way (or is there?) to share these screenies. I wish I could upload them to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter or whatever from the app. Why, god why, haven't they implemented that yet? People must be screaming for it...
Zemanta helped me add links & pictures to this email. It can do it for you too.

    Social overload

I just about had it with the social Internet. It would have been cool if people knew how to behave, but since they don't it just sucks. If social on the Internet equals the idea of telling strangers whatever you want, then I am voting for an immediate stop to it. It sucks, I tell you!

There, I said it. And don't comment on this post - don't be social with me!

What the hell is wrong with people??

Okay, so I am a bit upset today. Not because I spent 4,5 hours getting to work this morning since Stockholm, Sweden, is experiencing the worst (according to me the best) winter since the 60s and with major traffic issues and delays in the public transportation network. Subway was cancelled or delayed, trains broke down, buses over-filled etc.

I can live with that. It happens now and then that things just go wrong. So okay, things could have been much better and the public transportation companies could have handle it better, after all Sweden is in the northern hemisphere and we do have snow and cold here during winter time. Nothing's new.

People have behave like animals as soon as things don't work as they should. I say this is a typical problem you will only find in the western industrialized countries and in big cities and urban areas. Are we just too spoiled? They had to call in security to keep the order in the subway stations because people started to act like fraking insane.

I enjoyed watching all this, watching how our moral suddenly started to go down and how we slowly turned into selfish monsters. Yes, some of us were hours late for work and we all froze like hell in the -15 Celsius cold (like 0 Farenheit). But geez, that's not a reason to be arses!

People were yelling at, arguing with poor chauffeurs, staff members and guides - people who can't do anything about it. I admire these people who had to put up with this today. I mean, shit happens sometimes and all we can do is face it and live with it! Or am I wrong? I was a beautiful cold winter day today, blue sky, fresh and crispy air and I was pretty happy all the way to work, even if I was three hours late.

Nothing gets better by yelling, screaming and shouting. Why is this? Why can't people control themselves and realize that sometimes things...things just don't work! It's life, it's fact - live with it and get on with it!

Sorry, feels good get it off my chest... Even if I am pretty much the only Stockholmer feeling like this today. Grrrrr....

    My future tattoo?

I am thinking about getting me a tattoo to mark my new life after the gastric bypass surgery. This might just be it. I like the phoenix symbolism, the start of something new.
